A Ph Study Of Four Media Inoculated With Bacteria And Protozoa, Robert F. Mote

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Fifteen species of protozoa were used for a 36 day period to test the pH of four protozoa media. During this experiment the pH was determined every three days for control media, the media with bacteria, and the media with bacteria and protozoa. The pH curve included a lag phase, an acceleration phase, a plateau, and a decline with three of the four media during the 36 days. The fourth medium did not have a decline from the plateau during the 36 days. The protozoa and the four media are described.

Crustacea Of The Environs Of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, Richard W. Coleman

The following species of crustacea were collected in a survey of the environs of St. John, New Brunswick, Canada: Crangonyx gracilis Smith, Gammarus duebeni Lilly, Gammarus lawrencianus Bousfield, Gammarus oceanicus Segerstrale, Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, Hyale nilssoni Rathke, Hyalella azteca Sauss., Jaera albifrons Leach, Marinogammarus finmarchicus Dahl, Marinogammarus obtusatus Dahl and Marinogammarus stoerensis Reid: Hyalella azteca was the predominant species in purely fresh water lakes; Gammarus tigrinus predominated in fresh to brackish waters; and Hyale nilssoni appeared to be the dominant species from marine sources.

Underwater Photography Of Fish Found On The Coral Reefs Of Jamaica, Edward Charles Laird

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Techniques are described for photographing fish under water at the Caribbean Biological Center near Ocha Rios, Jamaica. F-numbers 5.6 and 8 with shutter speed of 1/125 at a distance of 3 feet yielded the best photographs.

Tetrapolar Heterothallism In The Basidiomycete, Lentodium Squamulosum, Albert D. Robinson, Martin A. Rosinski

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lentodium squamulosum has been shown to be tetrapolarly heterothallic. The 4 predicted mating reactions can be recognized by gross characters on Potato dextrose agar, but not on other media tested. Three sectors were found, 2 of which do not seem to dikaryotize with any of the 4 established mating types. Malt extract would appear to yield more consistent fruiting than Oat flake agar.

This study was devoted to an examination of the subjective perceptions held by counselors within the state of Iowa relative to the value of their counselor education for meeting the demands of their work. Factors investigated included: (1) the professional preparation of the Iowa school counselor; (2) the possibility of identifying a professional core of education for school counselors; (3) the appropriateness of preparatory courses for the performance of the job as perceived by the counselor; and (4) the counselor's perceptions of the relative importance of various specialized roles and functions.

The purpose of this study was to develop a set of evaluative criteria to be used in the analysis of student teaching programs. The approach to the study of the problem was to survey the literature of the field by known experts to determine their thinking on what is a good student teaching program. From this authoritative source, a set of evaluative criteria in the form of a checklist was developed.

Teaching taxonomy, classification, and keys to students is sometimes a slow and fruitless process. It seems that there is a fear and dislike of the whole idea of taxonomy among beginning students. I feel this is largely due to the fact that they are pushed into the system of classification and the use of keys without really understanding them.

Growing Fern Gametophytes For Laboratory Use, Daryl D. Smith

The life cycle of a fern is often studied in biology laboratories to illustrate the intermediate form between the dominant gametophyte of the bryophytes and the free-living sporophyte of seed plants. The availability of the gametophyte stage of ferns is often limited, making it necessary to produce fern prothallia by some artificial method.
