The use of only one mineral will eliminate the confusion that results from using several minerals at beginning of a unit in mineralogy. Calcite was chosen because of its frequent occurrence in various forms and the nature of its physical and chemical properties.

The laboratory approach has been extensively utilized in the contemporary high school science courses, but has not been utilized in the junior high sequence to the same extent. Realizing the need for a coordinated science pro g r a m for grades seven through nine which would incorporate the contemporary objectives and procedures, the Florida State Department of Science Education applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Office of Education to develop such a program.

Student and teacher alike should be more aware of fungi. The reasons I state for this assumption are: fungi are interesting; they play an important role in human affairs; fungi are associated with many areas of biological sciences; they are easily utilized in the classroom; and they are easy to obtain and work with.

The mean electrical axis of the heart is not affected by body stature. The angle and magnitude of this axis seem to be altered with exercise conditioning. Electrocardiographic P-R intervals and QRS durations do not seem to be affected by either body stature or conditioning.

Effects Of Medication On Respiration Pattern Of Tranquilized White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Judith A. Burdick, Kenneth Wilson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
White mice of varying ages were given a definite amount of the tranquilizer, reserpine, over a three-week period. At the end of this period, respiration rates were determined by use of a physiograph with impedance pneumograph and small animal attachments. Mice were given, in addition to the tranquilizer, varying dosages of different medicinals, and their respiratory pattern was recorded. Such medicinals as thyroxin, streptomycin, vitamins E and C were given and in combination with sulfanilamide, nicotinamide, neonal, kayquinone, hykenone. Effects of multiple medications were noted and recorded. Reserpine, when given in all combinations, lowered the respiratory rate from that recorded …

The problem of inadequate numbers of high school physics teachers and the poor preparation of many of those who do teach physics is one of the most serious problems which faces our profession. The CCP has activated a panel (the Panel on the Preparation of Physics Teachers) to give full-time attention to this problem and to recommend courses of action to the Commission. The following is a report by CCP Staff Physicist Ben A. Green, Jr., on leave from Western Reserve University, who recently visited several institutions which have been unusually successful in producing high school teachers of physics.
