Mark-And-Recapture Methods For Studying Domestic Cockroach Populations, Frank J. Bulow, Donald G. Huggins

Mark and recapture methods were used to estimate populations of American cockroaches, Periplenata americana (Linnaeus), and brown-banded cockroaches, Supella supellectilium (Serville) inhabiting various rooms in the Science Hall, Iowa State University. These methods also permitted estimates of sex ratios, length-frequencies, movement, and activity patterns. Food appeared to be the limiting factor in determining size of cockroach populations. Males outnumbered females in both species with total sex ratios being.8 and.6 for brown-banded and American cockroaches, respectively. Most of the American cockroaches caught were over 28.0 mm. with the 36.1 - 40.0 mm. class being the largest. The brown-banded cockroach catch contained …

This paper is based upon "A Report on Certain Mollusks of the Environs of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, to the Provincial Department of Health, Province of Nova Scotia, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada" sent to the Nova Scotia Department of Health in January, 1968. The purpose of this investigation was to study the performance of grade XI students of Saskatchewan (Canada) and Iowa (U. S. A.) on two of the Iowa Tests of Educational Development: Test 3, Correctness and Appropriateness of Expression; and Test 4, Ability to Do Quantitative Thinking. The interpretation of the performances involved examination of several related educational factors.

The sample comprising 543 grade XI students was drawn from twelve selected Saskatchewan high schools.

It was the purpose of this investigation (1) to determine the relative value of the Algebra I grade, the Iowa Tests of Educational Development quantitative thinking score, and the Iowa Tests of Educacational [sic] Development composite score in predicting the geometry grade, and (2) to present the findings, using two predictor variables, that would provide the best possible estimate of success in geometry. The study involved 219 students in seven schools in Linn County, Iowa, who were enrolled in geometry in 1966-67. Making a collection is not always considered an erudite use of laboratory time. It has been said that study of rocks, for example, entails a good deal more than discovering that a specific specimen can be assigned a specific name. This is freely admitted to be true, but this writer has discovered that assigning the proper name to a specimen demands a more careful and memorable examination of discriminating details of rock types, for example, and that it leads to a useful familiarity with variations of a single rock type.

As a matter of habit I have always given a twelve to fifteen question quiz to my junior high life science students every five to seven classroom days. This was always done on the untested assumption that a more frequent test versus a test given after three to four weeks of study would tend to motivate the student, serve as a learning device, and lessen the amount of cramming and test anxiety experienced by the student.
