Effect Of Multiple Medication On Hemoglohlin Content In Tranquilized Mice, Lester C. Shell, G. Dixon, T. Wyne, C. Nordstrom, J. Augustine, J. Heynen

Varying doses of medication were given tranquilized white mice. The hemoglobin content was measured by means of a Spectronic 20 colorimeter, using the Cannan chemical technique, with percent transmittance from colorimeter reading plotted against concentration grams per hemoglobin per 100 ml. blood of the standard. Comparison of length of medication, dosage, sex of animals, age of animals, and length of time on tranquilizer before medication was started recorded. Included in medication were varying amounts of sex hormones, and effects noted.

Body temperatures were recorded earlier from raccoons tethered outdoors in extreme cold. There was no suppression in body temperature. Later, two events suggested a new study, this time on heart rates: (1) the development of implantable radio-capsules for heart rate and EKG, and (2) the information that bears develop a bradycardia in the winter den, slowing sleeping heart rates from 40 b/m to 8-15 b/m. Three raccoons were studied periodically in outdoor dens in midwinter with Iowa implanted radio-capsules. Unlike the bears, when the raccoons stayed indoors for several days due to severe weather, their sleeping heart rates went up, …

Wallace And Carver Science Halls, Clifford L. Meints

The old science building, in which George Washington Carver studied while at Simpson College, was remodeled in 1967, dedicated the Henry A. Wallace Hall of Science, and now houses the Departments of Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Psychology as well as providing general lecture and recitation rooms. The newer Carver Science Hall was remodeled in 1968 and houses general classroom space along with the expanded Biology and Chemistry Departments. Specific aspects of the remodeling are described, and some sidelights of the building's history are mentioned. Two other honors concerning George Washington Carver at Simpson College are mentioned.

The increased number of flood-control dams constructed on rivers in recent years have created impoundments with physical and biological conditions that are at best poorly understood. A flood-control reservoir does not have normal lake conditions. The most apparent difference is the drastic changes in water level during flood control operations. The great majority of limnological studies have been conducted on natural lakes and the data apply only in a general way to the study of artificial reservoirs. Many of the investigations are concerned with only the summer months. As a consequence, our over-all concept of year-'round ecological conditions in reservoirs …

Anthocyanin Pigments In The Genus Lobelia: I. Pigments In Lobelia Cardinalis L. And L. Siphilitica L., S. Lane Wilson

The corollas of L. cardinalis and L. siphilitica were extracted in 1 percent HCl in methanol for 24 hours. This extract (10 ml. portions) was streaked on 3 mm. Whatman filterpaper. The filterpaper was placed in a large chromatographic tank in a solvent system of n-butanol: acetic acid: water (4:1:5 v/v). After separation the bands were cut out and the pigment from each band eluted in a solution of 0.01 percent HCI in methanol. These solutions were then reduced in volume under vacuum and the absorption spectrum of each pigment determined. Aliquots of the crude extract was also spotted on …

At Mason City High School this year something new has been added in the biology curriculum. It is part of the New Design, better known as Phase II Flex. Approximately 160 sophomores are in the program and are known as low achievers for various reasons. One of the reasons is that they are no longer interested in school. The lack of interest may be due to the traditional school day (fifty-five minutes, six periods a day) or to the fact that the students have never achieved success in anything they have attempted in school.

Pollution Study In The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Ruth N. Siemer

Bacteriological quality of water along commonly used canoe routes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area along the Minnesota-Canadian border was checked by estimating the most probable number (MPN) of coliforms and total plate counts of samples collected over a wide geographic area. Results show that much of the water used for drinking purposes does not meet United States Public Health Service standards for potability. Additional study is needed to determine (1) whether USPHS standards have any validity as applied to wilderness waters where high counts probably do not indicate human fecal contamination and (2) whether animals contributing to high counts …

Experimental Induction Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy Of An Inflorescence In A Zea. Mays L. Mutant, Alan R. Orr

FASCICLED EAR (Fa), a dominant ZEA MAYS L. mutant effecting the form of the inflorescence, was treated with aqueous solutions of a-naphthaleneacetic acid, indoleacetic acid, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide and triiodobenzoic acid every three days from the seedling stage until tassel emergence. The mutant responded to a-naphthaleneacetic acid and indoleactic acid in such a manner that certain treated plants developed a normal-appearing ear and tassel. The idea that an ear and tassel shoot meristem is a "plastic" system genetically programmed at specific points in development through a hormonal balance is discussed.

Investigations Of Nematode-Destroying Fungi In Central Iowa, Gerrit D. Van Dyke

Three substrata, dung of Sylvilagus fioridanus, leaf mulch and rotting logs, from wooded areas in central Iowa are investigated for nematode-destroying fungi. Fifteen species are newly recorded for Iowa as follows: Acrostalagmus bactrosporus, Arthrobotrys cladodes var. macroides, A. dactyloides, A. robusta, Cystopage lateralis, Dactylaria candida, D. haptotyla, Dactylella bembicoides, D. ellipsospora., Harposporium helicoides, Meristacrum asterospermum, Nematoctonus haptocladus, N. leiosporus, N. robusta, and Stylopage hadra. Eight previously reported species are isolated. A species resembling Nematoctonus leiosporus but with shorter spores which were often hooked at the terminal end was found. All three substrata proved highly productive.

Stylet-Bearing Nematodes Associated With Plants In Iowa Prairies, D. C. Norton, P. E. Ponchillia

Native Iowa prairies contained a plant parasitic nematode population which differed markedly in predominant species from populations in cultivated fields. Nematode species and their abundance varied among the five prairies sampled. Aorolaimus was common in most prairies, but is not known in Iowa cultivated soils. Tylenchorhynchus maximus was common in the Kalsow and Sheeder prairies, but was not found in the Cayler and Hayden prairies. Helicotylenchus was common in all prairies, but the species were unevenly distributed.

A Study Of The Vertical Distribution Of Periphyton Diatoms In Lake West Okoboji, Lowa, H. P. Hostetter, E. F. Stoermer

A series of five stations, arranged as a bottom transect away from shore between the depths of 15 centimeters and 5 meters, was studied. During the three-month period of study (June, July, and August, 1964) there was an evident seasonal succession of dominant diatom species at all stations. In general, the greatest fluctuations in the dominant elements of the flora were noted in the shallower stations. Besides being more seasonally stable, the floras of the deeper stations were relatively more diverse on all dates sampled.

Dissociation Of Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase With Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate, G. E. Marti, B. J. White

Rabbit muscle glyceraldehyle-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPD) was dissociated into a subunit species via lauryl sulfate (LS). The incubation mixture prepared from active GAPD 10^-5 M and LS 10^-3 M showed a rapid loss of initial activity. Within 30 minutes after the addition of the powdered LS, there was a 50 percent loss in initial enzymatic activity. The appearance of the subunit species was verified by Sephadex (a crossed-linked dextran) molecular sieve studies. Analysis of variance of counts of calls of male ringnecked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) in Iowa revealed highly significant differences among 16 persons on the same 10-station route on the same morning. Differences up to 15 minutes in starting time of observers had no significant effect on counts.

Thirty-nine Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) from Texas were introduced in the Yellow River State Forest, Allamakee County, Iowa, in the winter of 1960-61. The population was studied in three northeastern Iowa counties from June, 1966, through September, 1967; concentrated field studies were centered in and near the Paint Creek Unit of the forest. Adult turkeys appeared to tolerate the northeastern Iowa climate well, but poults may not be so tolerant. Although reproduction has occurred each year since the introduction, poult survival seemingly has been sporadic, possibly because of differences in weather conditions during the rearing seasons. …

After a histological examination of the compound eye and optic ganglia of several dragonfly nymphal instars (with particular attention given to the last nymphal instar), several observations relative to the postembryonic development of these structures are noted. The nymphal dragonfly compound eye increases in size from instar to instar by the development of new ommatidia from a permanent primitive portion of eye tissue located on the median edge of the original nymphal eye as well as from individual ommatidial growth. Early embryogenesis in eggs of different weights, from a commercial strain of White Leghorn chickens, was studied. Observations were limited to unincubated blastoderms and embryos after 38 hours of incubation. Large eggs were found to be associated with high frequency of "degenerating" blastoderms as compared to medium and small eggs. Mean width of the unincubated blastoderms was directly related to the egg size. Such a direct relationship was, however, not so obvious in 38-hour embryos, probably because of a high degree of developmental variability associated with large eggs.
