Seed Mix Experiments And Analysis Of Native Seed Supply For The Pollinator Habitat Initiative, Laura Jackson, Justin Meissen

Tallgrass Prairie Publications and Reports

We examined the relationship between seed mix design, native seed supply, and delivery of ecosystem services by the Conservation Reserve Program, using the CP-42 Pollinator Initiative in Iowa from 2015 to 2019 as a test case. Iowa farmers enrolled over 237,000 acres into this program over a short time, an achievement that is noticeable on the Iowan landscape.

Background: Over the past twenty-five years, Africa had experienced the smallest relative decrease of child undernutrition in any world region. Many aid organizations were redirecting efforts and resources to supporting community - based initiatives such as Community Health Work (CHW). Aim / Objectives: While peer models showed short term hope, there was limited long-term evidence. The study expounded upon an evaluation on a health promotion program using the Care Group Model. Benefit sharing is a key concept for sustainable development in communities affected by the extractive industry. In the Arctic, where extractive activities have been growing, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of benefit sharing frameworks is especially critical. The goal of this paper is to develop a synthesis and advance the theory of benefit sharing frameworks in the Arctic. Based on previously published research, a review of literature, a desktop analysis of national legislation, as well as by capitalizing on the original case studies, this paper analyzes benefit sharing arrangements and develops the typology of benefit sharing regimes in the Arctic. …

Prairies once dominated 85% of Iowa. Sadly, that large portion of native prairie has been drastically reduced to 0.01% because of agricultural expansion. Habitat loss is one of the main contributors to the massive decline in the native bee population and its biodiversity. Native pollinators are essential to the ecosystem and play a large role in the pollination of row crops. Due to the importance of Asclepias syriaca (common milkweed) to the eastern population of the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), it is usually recommended for planting by federal conservation programs and state monarch recovery plans. However, A. syriaca has long been considered a weed, and is commonly found in roadsides and other disturbed landscapes where it has not been deliberately introduced. We wanted to determine if seeding A. syriaca is necessary for its establishment, or if milkweed populations in the surrounding landscape could spread into the plantings. The conversion of grassland habitats and intensification of row crop agriculture over the last several decades have driven declines in native pollinator populations throughout the Midwestern USA. These declines in native bee and butterfly abundance have negative ecosystem consequences due to these insects’ important ecological roles as pollinators of vegetable crops and other plant life. The United States Department of Agriculture’s Conservation Reserve Program Pollinator Habitat Initiative (CP-42) aims to conserve native pollinators by increasing pollinator habitat throughout the United States. Fusarium graminearum is a pathogenic fungus that causes scab or Fusarium head blight disease in barley and wheat. The disease not only reduces yield, but it also contaminates the kernel with harmful toxins. Therefore, the disease causes economic loss and poses a health risk to humans and animals (McMullen et al., 2012). There is no natural resistance to scab disease in barley and there are no effective fungicides to control it. Alternative approaches to protect barley from this devastating disease are badly needed. The recent decline in native bee populations across the Midwest has been linked to the drastic decrease of prairie habitats and pollinator floral resources. Since the agricultural revolution, grassland areas have been removed and replaced with row crops to meet the needs of expanding markets, including the production of ethanol. In response to the loss of these (and other) essential pollinators, the Conservation Reserve Program administered by the USDA initiated a pollinator habitat initiative called CP-42. The loss of tallgrass prairie habitat has negatively impacted North American pollinator communities. To combat this loss, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) created Conservation Practice (CP) 42 to establish new pollinator habitat on the landscape. A two-year vegetation survey of CP42 sites in Iowa revealed high variability in overall quality (e.g., the ratio of sown forb-to-weed stems ranged from 9:1 to 1:9 across sites ). To examine potential causes of this variability, we assessed whether soil water storage capacity and corn suitability rating influence species-specific forb establishment in 35 surveyed CP42 fields. Every year thousands of immigrants come to the United States and look to join the labor force. Most of these immigrants have a first language that is not English. This study analyzes how wage income, business and farm income, and investment income are affected by English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014. I use data from the American Community Survey and a log-linear econometric model to explore this relationship. I conclude that wage income and business and farm income had …

We synthesize observations from 1979 to 2016 of a contact zone involving two subspecies of pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae connectens and T. b. opulentus) and their respective chewing lice (Geomydoecus aurei and G. centralis) along the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico, U.S.A., to test predictions about the dynamics of the zone. Historically, the natural flood cycle of the Rio Grande prevented contact between the two subspecies of pocket gophers. Flood control measures completed in the 1930s permitted contact, thus establishing the hybrid zone between the pocket gophers and the contact zone between their lice (without hybridization). High-diversity mixtures of perennial tallgrass prairie vegetation could be useful biomass feed-stocks for marginal farmland in the Midwestern United States. These agroenergy crops can help meet cel-lulosic agrofuel targets while also enhancing other ecosystem services on the landscape. One proposedadvantage of high-diversity prairie biomass feedstocks is that they should become nutrient limited at aslower rate than monoculture feedstocks. In this study, we examine rates of soil nutrient depletion and thephysiology and performance of a focal species (switchgrass,Panicum virgatumL.) in four prairie agroen-ergy feedstocks with different species composition and diversity. Ecology education of the younger generations is vital for worldwide change of people’s attitudes toward nature warranted by the current global ecological crisis. Yet, this goal needs to be addressed through age-appropriate activities that are educational and engaging. This practical article focuses on dioramas of ocean reef life made by first graders. This arts-integrated project served two main purposes: 1) education of primary students about ocean ecology and helping students realize their roles in saving nature 2) increasing student science content knowledge.
