Microsatellite instability (MSI) is a key biomarker of mismatch repair deficiency and response to immunotherapy, yet most existing genomic detection methods are optimized for short-read sequencing and rely on a panel of homopolymer markers, limiting the ability to characterize genome-wide and motif-specific patterns of instability. Here we present Owl, a bioinformatic tool for quantifying MSI from long-read (PacBio) genomic data. Owl leverages a genome-wide marker set of more than 140,000 microsatellite repeats ranging from 1-6 bp in length to measure MSI across a phased genome. Using a wrap-around alignment algorithm, Owl constructs repeat-length distributions at each marker site and flags …

Irrigation Management With A Field Water Balance And Virus Incidence In Dahlia Cut Flowers, Chloe Seeborg, Melanie Stock, Claudia Nischwitz, Xin Dai, Cambry Adams, Burdette Barker
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Irrigation guidelines are needed for the field production of emerging specialty crops to support the sustainability and economic viability of small farms. The goal of this study was to establish crop coefficients (Kc) of dahlia (Dahlia × hybrida), a popular, profitable cut flower crop, while documenting virus infection. A two-year field study was conducted with two industry-important cultivars that vary in production timing and bloom: ‘Boom Boom White’, an earlier and mid-sized formal decorative, and ‘Café au Lait’, a later and large informal decorative bloom type. A field water balance was used to evaluate five irrigation …
No Evidence For Modulation Of The Readiness Potential By Respiratory Phase During Natural Breathing, Lucas Jeay-Bizot, Raniyah Chisti, Uri Maoz, Aaron Schurger
No Evidence For Modulation Of The Readiness Potential By Respiratory Phase During Natural Breathing, Lucas Jeay-Bizot, Raniyah Chisti, Uri Maoz, Aaron Schurger
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Respiratory processes are increasingly implicated in shaping neural activity and behavior. Recent studies have reported a coupling between respiratory phase and the cortical readiness potential (RP), suggesting that breathing may modulate the neural processes preceding voluntary action. Here, using electroencephalography recordings in humans, we re-examine this claim using the original dataset and a new independent dataset, as well as in simulated data with no coupling. We show that the reported association arises from a confound: both RP amplitude and respiratory phase are coupled to movement onset. The original analysis does not control for this dependency, leading to a spurious effect …
Ecofriendly Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles As Antimicrobial Active Agents From Its Cationic Precursors, Abdul Haris Watoni Watoni
Ecofriendly Synthesis Of Silver Nanoparticles As Antimicrobial Active Agents From Its Cationic Precursors, Abdul Haris Watoni Watoni
Chimica et Natura Acta
This review presents a comprehensive survey on the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles from silver nitrate precursor using plant extracts along with their characterization and antimicrobial activity assessment. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles through a green chemistry approach is increasingly in demand because it is environmentally friendly, easy to do, and efficient, especially for the purpose of antimicrobial active ingredients in disinfectant and antiseptic formulas. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles can be carried out using silver nitrate as a silver precursor and plant extracts as a source of bioreductants and capping agents. The synthesis products are then characterized using UV-Vis …

This article shares insights from a professional study tour of Danish early childhood education programmes, examining how social pedagogical principles are embedded in outdoor learning environments. During June 2024, a group of early childhood teacher educators from the United States visited forest kindergartens, adventure playgrounds and natural playscapes in Denmark as participants in the Nordic Outdoor Model of Education study tour. Through guided visits and observations, we documented pedagogical practices that demonstrate the application of social pedagogy– particularly the integration of head, heart and hands in supporting children’s holistic development. This article connects observed practices to social pedagogical theory, highlighting …

The Perceived Benefit Of A Degree Requirement In Emergency Medical Services Education And Success, Joseph H. Wood
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Introduction: This study sought to assess how graduates of Wallace Community College's paramedic program impacted their readiness for the NREMT Paramedic examination and entering the workforce, specifically comparing those who completed an associate degree to those who completed the certificate program. Methods: This qualitative study analyzed the perspectives of graduates from the paramedic program using a phenomenological approach. Using a purposive sampling technique, nine graduates were chosen for one-on-one interviews, and six were selected for a focus group. Results: Analysis of participant responses revealed three main themes: the perceived value of a degree, student preparedness for the NREMT exam and …

Physical Oracles And The Instrumental Status Of The Terrestrial Biosphere, Volodymyr Kotegov
Physical Oracles And The Instrumental Status Of The Terrestrial Biosphere, Volodymyr Kotegov
Defensive Publications Series
This document develops a general instrumental framework for evaluating physical systems that function as oracles — systems capable of generating high-dimensional observations on the actual physics of the universe, exhibiting substantial computational irreducibility, and producing data in measurement bases not yet fully formalized by the agent. Within this framework the terrestrial biosphere is analysed as the strongest currently known Slow Oracle.
Humanistic, ethical, and sentimental considerations are excluded. Evaluation proceeds solely in terms of expected utility, option value under residual uncertainty, basis diversity rent, thermodynamic opportunity cost, and resistance to model collapse. The central claim is that, while residual uncertainty …

Caldwell Hermes‑Awh V1.0 High‑Flux Enthalpy‑Recycling Modular Extraction System Open-Hardware, Build-And-Test Atmospheric Water Harvester For Low-Humidity Environments, Michael Victor Caldwell Mr.
Defensive Publications Series
Caldwell HERMES‑AWH is a modular, solar-regenerated atmospheric-water-harvesting system designed for low-to-moderate relative humidity, nominally 15–35% RH. The design addresses the major practical bottlenecks of conventional sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting: slow water-vapor diffusion into thick sorbent beds, adsorption heat that reduces uptake, poor thermal uniformity during regeneration, loss of desorbed vapor, incomplete condensation recovery, and low daily cycle count.
The system uses multiple thin structured sorbent cassettes, each carrying a 0.5–2.0 mm active sorbent layer on a thermally conductive backplane. Cassettes operate in sequential modes: ambient-air adsorption, thermal preconditioning, closed solar-thermal regeneration, vapor recovery and condensation, and cooling/reset. The system maintains …

Integrative Dna Barcoding In Ficus Cultivars In Taif Highlands, Saudi Arabia: Complementary Roles Of Rbcl And Trnh-Psba Markers, Amal A. Alyamani
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
The common fig (Ficus carica L.) is a commercially significant fruit crop in Saudi Arabia, with particular importance in the Al-Taif highland region. In this study, three DNA barcodes (rbcL, ITS, and trnH-psbA) were evaluated on eleven fig cultivars collected from various geographically distinct sites within the Al-Taif highlands. A combination of three plant DNA barcoding markers, rbcL, ITS, and trnH-psbA, alongside selected morphological traits of mature leaves and fruits, was used to assess the genetic and phenotypic diversity among Fig varieties. The integrative approach aimed to achieve reliable cultivar discrimination and enhance understanding of the genetic structure and …
Riluzole As A Dual-Targeted Radiosensitizer For Osteosarcoma: Targeting Tumor Cells And Angiogenic Vasculature To Enhance Single High-Dose Radiotherapy Efficacy, Pooja P. Rao
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Osteosarcoma (OS), the most common primary bone malignancy of children and young adults, is intrinsically radioresistant, and outcomes for patients with unresectable or metastatic disease have not improved in over four decades. Single-dose radiation therapy (SDRT) is a potent modality against radioresistant, highly vascularized sarcomas, but its application in OS is constrained by dose-dependent normal tissue toxicity. Radiosensitizers achieving tumor control at lower doses therefore offer a direct route to widening the therapeutic window. Critically, OS radioresistance is not tumor-cell-autonomous. It emerges from two coordinated compartments: aberrant DNA repair and antioxidant capacity intrinsic to the tumor cell, and a radioprotective, …
