Undergraduate Student Work

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a relatively new subject of attention for psychopathology researchers, and is listed as a Condition for Further Study in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). Current research on NSSI has utilized primarily female participants, limiting generalizability. Additionally, little research has been conducted with NSSI stigma. Thus, the current study examined whether two things influenced NSSI stigma: the sex of an individual engaging in it, and participant familiarity with NSSI. The results revealed that sex did not influence stigma. Further, there was no correlation between familiarity and NSSI stigma.

Commercially available running shoes differ in terms of their relative masses. It is unclear how well consumers may be able to judge mass differences from wearing alone, though previous studies suggest that perceptual outcomes may be influenced by experimental design factors such as the length of time worn. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the number of shoes used in a testing session impacts wearers’ mass perceptual accuracy. Forty-eight young adult males ran for 5 min in 4 pairs of shoes (their own running shoes plus 3 unfamiliar pairs) before being asked whether an unfamiliar running shoe …

It is impossible to explicitly state the degree to which mid-contract management (MCM) impacts the benefits that CRP enrollments provide due to the size of the program and variety of management prescriptions. But it is well documented that all native grasslands evolved with some type of ecological disturbance and the relatively good health of the grassland correlates with its disturbance regime. Concomitantly, all grassland bird communities have habitat requirements that evolved in conjunction with disturbance (primarily grazing).

While natural-disturbance regimes may be desirable from an ecological prospective, dependence on natural disturbances to meet specific conservation objectives is unrealistic. Management policies …

Advances in next-generation sequencing and high-throughput techniques have enabled the generation of vast amounts of diverse omics data. These big data provide an unprecedented opportunity in biology, but impose great challenges in data integration, data mining, and knowledge discovery due to the complexity, heterogeneity, dynamics, uncertainty, and high-dimensionality inherited in the omics data. Network has been widely used to represent relations between entities in biological system, such as protein-protein interaction, gene regulation, and brain connectivity (i.e. network construction) as well as to infer novel relations given a reconstructed network (aka link prediction). High school teachers begin each year with a plethora of content standards to teach, however, instructing students how to learn is hardly ever considered. Metacognition and learning how to learn are not present in high school science content standards. The ability to self-regulate our knowledge is essential to assumptions about learning (Cubukcu, 2009). Students are expected to use metacognitive strategies, even if they do not have them. When students work through problems, it is common to expect them to go back and recheck their work. This is a form of metacognition and self-regulation. The Iowa around today looks vastly different from the Iowa that was originally around. What once used to house vast tallgrass prairies is now home to about 0.1% of what was originally here (Smith 1998). However, conservationists have been working hard to restore even a fraction of what originally here despite high costs and low yields in restoration prairies. Recently experiments have been done on the use of sacrificial seed to potentially increase plant yield in restoration with successful results. Genetic Variation Within A Broadly Distributed Chewing Louse Genus (Thomomydoecus), Clarissa Elizabeth Bruns

No broad study has been conducted to examine the genetics of Thomomydoecus species and their patterns of geographic variation. Chewing lice and their parasite-host relationships with pocket gophers have been studied as a key example of cophylogeny (Demastes et al., 2012). Despite this, genetic data on interspecific and intraspecific variation in Thomomydoecus is unexplored, and prior studies consisted within the narrow frame of one complex or species and its relative host gopher. This project collected, and analyzed genetic data, then generated phylogenetic trees. Baseball is a reflection of America (Briley, 1992). The game is immersed in traditions. Many of these traditions are gendered. Baseball is built on myth, and these myths have served the purpose of keeping baseball white, heterosexual, and male. Baseball is also characteristic of enduring inequalities and discrimination. Sixty years after Jackie Robinson integrated Major League Baseball, owners, managers, coaches, CEOs, and fans are still overwhelmingly white and male (Chang, 2017; Lapchick, 2019). Evaluation Of The Csr1-2 Allele From Arabidopsis Thaliana Cs3102 As An Imazapyr Herbicide Resistance Marker For Biolistic Transformation Of The Shoot Apical Meristem, Amanda J. Stump

Plant genetic engineering requires a marker gene to differentiate transformed cells. To test the csr1-2 allele as a selectable marker for the shoot apical meristem (SAM), we cloned a genomic fragment from Arabidopsis thaliana mutant CS3102 which contained the coding sequence and promoter. We then evaluated the utility of this allele on two model systems, Arabidopsis and tobacco, with soybean as the positive control. Initial dose-response experiments were conducted using a seedling plate assay to determine the lethal dose of imazapyr. For the mutant Arabidopsis thaliana CS3102, a concentration of 500 μM imazapyr was required to overcome the resistance phenotype …

Although not frequently discussed in mainstream society, shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma is a significant problem. Victimized children often die as a result of the injuries they face, or they endure many struggles as they move forward in life—often with severe mental and physical disabilities. Families are often physically and psychologically unprepared for how a shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma diagnosis affects their lives for many years to come. Evidence-based practice (EBP) in psychology requires use of clinical judgement to apply the best evidence to each client’s case (APA Presidential Taskforce on Evidence-Based Practice, 2006), but practitioners may not fully engage in EBP given low usage of evidence-based treatments or manuals (Becker et al., 2013; Johnson et al., 2016; Steir, Lasota, & Christensen, 2007). Some practitioners and students misunderstand EBP (Luebbe, Radcliffe, Callands, Green, & Thorn, 2007; Wilson et al., 2009).
