The last decade was marked by drastic changes in the studied approach to teaching science and most school subjects. A whole new vocabulary of science education terminology appeared-the process approach, conceptual schemes, Hanson integrated science, audio-tutorial techniques, the multi-media approach, computer-assisted instruction. These and many other phrases can be summed up in the one word innovation, and many educators of the more traditional bent feel a bit uneasy and perhaps defensive about the extent to which innovation is lacking in their teaching.

There is no shortage of information and misinformation about sex education; however, it is difficult to determine which information is based upon more than personal bias and experience. Educators profess to educate children in those aspects of behavioral change which are based upon the needs of the students. The assumption is that if a need exists that is not otherwise being met, the schools must satisfy that need. Is sex education such a need?

We so frequently use Amoeba proteus for observation and experimentation in our classes in Cell Structure and Function, and Physiological Protozoology at the University of Kansas, that it has been necessary to avoid buying the many needed cultures from any of the major biological suppliers. Consequently, we have had to devise a reasonably reliable method of our own to culture that amoeba.

The year around study of Iowa's rivers would provide a priceless body of data. The physical and chemical data, the biological data are needed so that the state may evaluate the progress of quality control in the crucial years ahead. The state has hundreds of men capable of doing such studies in local areas (high school, Jr. college, and college instructors in science). A massive approach could yield state-wide data quickly and enable many scientists to be useful scientifically and socially. This could involve many students of all ages who are eager to work and learn.

Twenty-four hour preservation of kidneys has been achieved without perfusion, and in some instances without oxygen in a hypothermic hyperbaric environment (Groenewald et al., 1969). These experiments were designed to evaluate the survival of the preserved kidneys and the success of the preservation techniques.

Caryophyllaeid Cestodes From Four Species Of Carpiodes (Teleostei: Catostomidae), Dennis D. Williams, Martin J. Ulmer

The caryophyllaeid cestode fauna of four species of carpsuckers was investigated. Four hundred and thirty hosts from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Nebraska were examined (Aug. 1967-Dec. 1968) and 260 (60%) were parasitized. Four species of caryophyllaeids were found, of which Spartoides wardi and Biacetabulum carpiodi were most abundant. B. carpiodi exhibits a definite seasonal periodicity in spring and early summer, but none appears to exist for S. wardi. Single infections of Glaridacris confusa and Monobothrium sp. were also encountered.

Preliminary Results Of A Statistical Analysis Of A Long-Term Limnological Study Of The Coralville Reservoir, William D. Wade, Donald B. Mcdonald

The Coralville Reservoir, located on the Iowa River upstream from Iowa City, has been the subject of an intensive limnological study for the past five years. Interpretation of the physical, chemical and biological data obtained was difficult due to the large numbers of parameters measured and the frequency of sampling. The application of various statistical methods was undertaken in order to aid in analysis of the data. Preliminary correlation analyses yielded some meaningful correlations but had severe limitations. Auto-covariance and auto-correlation analysis for each parameter as well as cross-covariance and correlation tests between a number of parameters yielded useful data …

Another question that your students can answer for themselves is whether bees really inherit their work behavior. That's what we tell our students - that bees are creatures of instinct. And expect our students to believe it. We all know, of course, that too much of our teaching is like that. The least we can do is to offer evidence. A Study Of Abcission Zone Development In Leaves Of Ginkgo Biloba L., G. Wayne Mosher, Daryl D. Smith

The development of the leaf abscission zone in Ginkgo biloba trees and seedlings was studied. Leaves from Ginkgo seedlings were debladed to enhance anatomical changes in the abscission region. The development of an abscission layer was observed six days after deblading. The formation of the zone was not complete, but an abaxial to adaxial pattern of development was apparent. No evidence of separation was noted. Debladed Ginkgo petioles remained green and did not abscise during the six weeks period of study. The development of an abscission layer was observed in leaves from a Ginkgo tree one week prior to separation. …

Efforts by the Iowa Conservation Commission to reintroduce wild turkeys into their former range in Iowa have been expanded considerably in recent years. Since the initial release of Rio Grande wild turkeys in the Yellow River State Forest in northeastern Iowa in 1960-61, additional releases have been made at five other sites. Merriam's wild turkeys were liberated in the eastern part of Stephens State Forest in south central Iowa and in Monona County in western Iowa in early 1966. Eastern wild turkeys were stocked in Shimek State Forest in southeastern Iowa in 1965-66, in the western part of Stephens State …

Growth Of The Fathead Minnow (Pimephales Promelas) In Tertiary Treatment Ponds, John L. Konefes, Roger W. Bachmann

A series of experimental ponds, utilizing treated sewage effluent as a water source, have been constructed at the Ames Water Pollution Control Plant. Fathead minnow fry were introduced into the ponds in the summer of 1969 and observations were made on their growth rates, reproduction, and food habits during the summer months. Growth was comparable to that previously reported for hatchery ponds. The fish matured by mid-summer and successfully produced a second crop of fry. The use of tertiary ponds for fish production seems to be a useful approach to the conservation of natural resources.

Helminths From Six Species Of Iowa Bats, Harvey D. Blankespoor, Martin J. Ulmer

Sixty-four bats, representing six species, namely, Eptesicus fuscus (big brown bat), Lasionycteris noctivagans (silver-haired bat), Lasiurus borealis (red bat), Lasiurus cinereus (hoary bat), Myotis lucifugus (little brown bat) and Pipistrellus subflavus (eastern pipistrel bat), were collected in thirteen counties in Iowa and examined for helminths during October, 1965 to August, 1966. Ten species of trematodes, two species of cestodes and three species of nematodes were identified from these hosts. This study results in twelve new host records for seven trematodes, one cestode and one nematode. Trematodes constitute the major group of helminths recovered, 76.6% of the hosts being parasitized; nematodes …

Surficial Geology, Soils, And Plant Zonation Ross Biological Area, William H. Allen Jr., Betty C. Goettsch, Robert K. Kennedy

Plant distribution is investigated with regard to geologic, geomorphic, and pedologic influences. Little is known about the soil-plant relationship of native species. This study attempts to develop a basic concept that the native plant zonation can be described in terms of the above three factors simply on the basis of routine field investigations. Further studies may then be designed to bring about a more quantitative understanding of the actual nutrient and moisture regimes under which certain native species will be most commonly found.

A Study Of The Esterification Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanediol, Lewis Metzler Naylor

The purpose of this research was to prepare, identify, and characterize 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,.3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate using 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol and monochloroacetic acid as starting materials. The synthesis of this diester has not been reported previously.

Catalyzed and uncatalyzed reactions were attempted, with the uncatalyzed having, in general, the better yield. The diester, trans-2,2,4,4-tetrametbyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol bischloroacetate (mp, 103.5-104; n²², 1.516-1.520), was isolated from a mixture of the isomers. The trans configuration of the diester was confirmed by comparing known nuclear magnetic resonance spectra to that of the diester. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm functional groups. The Development Of Behavior And The Ossification Of Bone In The Bantam-Chick Embryo, Christine M. Hagedorn

The objectives of this study were (1) to establish an index of standard behavior, and (2) to establish an index of skeletal development for each day of embryonic development for the bantam-chick embryo. The principal method used was direct observation of the embryo. This was done by removing the shell from the blunt end of the egg and applying a coating of vaseline to the exposed inner-shell membrane. The bones observed in skeletal development were made visible by alizarin red S stain.
