As an integral part of most woodworking industries, jigs and fixtures are worthy of some study. There is very little evidence of written material covering the topic even though the use of many of these devices is widespread throughout industry. The fact that these devices normally result in a substantial saving in production costs can often make them an important facet of a firm's business.

This saving can be accomplished in a number of different ways: use of unskilled workers, standardization of parts, interchangeability of pieces, reduction of safety hazards, and lowering of production time. Not all points will apply …

A Consideration Of Student Understanding Of Science In Two Approaches To Bscs Biology, Harry F. Fulton

The understanding of science by students is considered by science educators to be a worthwhile goal in the teaching of science. Attempts have been made to achieve this goal in the various curricula that have been developed, and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study is one of these curricula. Several studies have been attempted to measure the understanding of science as a student outcome in a particular course such as BSCS Biology. In most studies the Test On Understanding Science (TOUS) (1) was the most common instrument used.

A few years ago the rate of production of scientists and (not too surprisingly) the rate of production of scientific articles was doubling every ten years. Really new science was coming out at a tremendous rate, generating major new areas such as solid state physics, molecular biology, radio-astronomy, and major breakthroughs such as the cracking of the genetic code, the discoveries of the transistor effect, of pulsars, and quasars, of techniques of stereospecific syntheses, of ultrasensitive methods of compound detection, identification, analysis, and structure determination, and of new fundamental particles in profusion.

How much does it cost to synthesize a gene, and who pays for it? University of Wisconsin President Fred Harvey Harrington made an effort to tie down such costs in a report to UW Regents on Dr. Har Gobind Khorana's announcement of the first complete laboratory synthesis of a gene.

Open Letter To Science Teachers: Before You Lock The Door, Delma E. Harding

Before closing textbooks and locking classroom doors for the summer, check on several things to help make your teaching more coordinated and meaningful when fall comes. Make out a tentative schedule for next year's classes. Decide what units to teach and approximately what length each is to be. Include a list of materials you plan to use for each unit. This means chemicals, slides, demonstrations, experiments, models, audiovisual aids, tape recordings, glassware, and anything else you expect to use. Have everything ordered or available for use, so there are no disappointments or holdups when you start teaching again.

Innovation In Science Education In Australia, Richard P. Tisher

There are many similarities in the type of science education provided in Australia and in the United States. Teaching methods, for example, range from the traditional textbook-oriented approach to a laboratory, inquiry-oriented one. Also similar issues related to science education are being debated. Two areas of concern are the preservice education of science teachers and curriculum development. It is in this last mentioned area that the greatest innovation has occurred.

High school teachers do a wonderful job. This observation is of long standing and particularly true when one considers the "handicaps" under which these teachers operate. They not only must give of themselves and of their time, but each must be the disciplinarian, father-confessor, and big-buddy of the students. They must cope with school boards and parents, take tickets and usher! For all their expertise in these many areas, we on the "outside" thank these teachers.

Science Teachers' Knowledge Of Sound Theory, Jerry Underfer

J. W. Warren has written a book recently which gives a critical review of mistaken ideas which are conveyed by physics textbooks and overlooked by physics teachers. Although Warren doesn't consider the area of sound to any extent, the situation is analogous. As he points out, errors and misleading material which are published for years while books pass through several editions gravely mislead students.

Transitory Effects Of Dimethyl Sulfoxide On The Electrical Properties Of Isolated Frog Skin, David M. Baumann, Jewett Dunham

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The experiments indicate that when DMSO-Ringer's solutions are applied to the outside of the frog skin, the electrical potential difference across the skin decreases while the short circuiting current increases slightly. Ringer's solutions containing DMSO applied to the inside of the skin caused both the short circuiting current and the potential difference across the skin to decrease. These observations appear to be directly related to the concentration of DMSO-Ringer's applied. The observed effects are discussed with respect to possible changes in the skin brought about by the DMSO and the relationships of these phenomena to active transport functions of the …

A Physio-Chemical Analysis Of The Headwaters Of The Little Sioux River, Milbert H. Krohn

The magnitude and seasonal variation of 11 selected physiochemical characteristics at four collection sites in the headwater region of the Little Sioux River are reported for a 12-month period from March 1969 through February 1970. Little variation was found between study sites for given sampling times.

A Preliminary Faunal Study Of The Upper Little Sioux River, Richard V. Bovbjerg, Nancy L. Pearsall, Michael L. Brackin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several stations of the Little Sioux River were sampled from the Minnesota headwaters to the confluence of Milford Creek. The river changes from intermittent, ponded headwaters to continuously flowing stretches with a concomitant shift in the fauna of increasing downstream diversity of species. While the study of only one summer is reported here, it is hoped that further studies on this and other rivers would be encouraged so that biologists will have a biotic baseline to follow future changes and hopefully to be the basis for suggested water quality control of the future.

Some Factors Affecting The Nest-Cleaning Behavior Of Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera), Harold A. Borchers

Glass-paned observation hives were used to study the behavior of nestcleaning in American Foulbrood-resistant honey bees. Transplanted-dead brood in comb inserts was used to determine the rate of removal of dead brood. Dead brood located within the brood nest was removed faster than dead brood located in other areas. Strong nectar flow appeared to exert a positive influence on the rate of removal of dead brood. Comparisons made between the responses of honey bees toward brood killed by American Foulbrood and brood killed by hydrogen cyanide showed inconsistencies that indicate the possibility of unknown environmental factors.

The Effects Of Ddt And Sevin On Litter Decomposition And Litter Fauna, Diana J. Bodtker, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

A comparison of the effects of spraying with DDT, Sevin or water on litter decomposition and litter fauna was made, using a litter bag method. During the thirteen week experimental period no significant differences were found between the rate of decomposition in the litter receiving the three different treatments. Twenty-four hours after spraying the number of Collembola was greatly reduced in the Sevin treated plots. At the end of the experimental period the reduction of fauna other than mites or Collembola was significant at the .01 level as compared to the effects of Sevin or water.

Research In Teaching And The Development Of A Theory Of Science Teaching, R. P. Tisher

This paper outlines some of the significant aspects of research in teaching. Three phases can be distinguished in this research. They are the descriptive, the pragmatic and the eclectic-synthetic ones. The descriptive phase is characterized by the development of classroom observation schedules and the provision of sets of concepts permitting teachers and research workers to communicate about procedures. The categorization of behaviors has resulted in more attention being given to them. Hopefully, the vocabulary and concepts generated in the descriptive phase will not only aid in communicating ideas about teaching but will lead to a greater control over the process.

Calanoid Copepods From The Forest To Prairie Transition In The Itasca Park Region Of Minnesota, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Calanoid copepods found in a summer survey of northwestern Minnesota lakes and ponds were: Epischura lacustris, Diaptomus oregonensis, D. leptopus, D. sakatchewanensis, D. nudus, and D. siciloides. Some diaptomid species correlated with vegetational type. E. lacustris, D. oregonensis, D. saskatchewanensis were characteristic of pine hardwood and mesic deciduous forest regions while D. nudus and D. siciloides were characteristic of Oak-Savanna and prairie regions. D. leptopus was characteristic in shallow water habitats and occurred on both sides of the transitional area.
