Growth And Reproduction Of Yearling Tilapia Aurea In Iowa Ponds, Douglas W. Pelren, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Tilapia aurea were introduced in three Iowa ponds with the knowledge that they would not overwinter. Differential growth of the sexes and aggressive behavior interfered with tests on effects of crowding tilapia in pens. Females began reproducing at 31 g in mid-July and offspring were up to 179 mm total length or 82 g in October. Stomachs were usually empty in females brooding eggs, and condition factors were lower for females brooding fry than for other females. Males grew faster and had higher condition factors than females. Yearling tilapia 89-162 mm total length in May, added an average of 0.86 …

Leaves and needles from deciduous and coniferous trees play a major role in the formation of soil in their respective forests and thus help to determine the type of life that can successfully live there. Because of the known effects of leaf and needle litter on larger invertebrate life, earthworms, millipedes, etc., it was decided to experiment with infusions of paramecia derived from both leaves and needles to see if they were similarly affected.

Chronology Of Reproduction Of The Fox Squirrel In Iowa, Richard J. Mccloskey, Paul A. Vohs Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to increase the information available concerning the chronology of production in the fox squirrel (Sciurus niger rufiventer Geoffroy) and the contribution of spring and fall litters to the fall population. Previous reports indicated that two major periods of reproductive activity occurred annually. Our information indicates that only one major period of reproductive activity per year occurred in Iowa during 1966 and 1967. The onset of reproduction occurred in October when females in a state of oestrus were first handled. Parturition began in late December and early January. Young were born in all months from January …

Movement Of Bigmouth Buffalo In Coralville Reservoir, Iowa, Larry Mitzner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Movement characteristics of bigmouth buffalo were determined and used to correct for error in population estimates caused by dilution effect. No gross upstream or downstream movement was observed and one standard deviation of movement from point of release was 1.13 miles based on 60 recaptures. A total of 8,065 individuals were marked. I estimated 81% of the marked fish remained in a four mile study area during the investigation. Models are presented to determine movement and dispersion of marked fish from point of release.

An Annotated Checklist Of The Butterflies Of Iowa, Michael C. Christenson

This study of the butterflies of Iowa collates published records with data obtained from institutional and private collections throughout the state, together with the author's records compiled during the 1969 and 1970 collecting seasons. Results are presented in the forms of an annotated checklist, tabular comparisons with adjacent states, and maps. One hundred thirty species are recorded from the state, and geographic and temporal distributions are given for each. Fourteen previously recorded species are removed from the state list. Twenty-two species which were recorded in collections of 50 years ago have not been collected since. This may indicate that the …

The Role Of The Science Supervisor As Perceived By Elementary And Secondary Science Teachers, Thomas Graika

The problem that was considered in the study was whether the role of the science supervisor was perceived differently by secondary and elementary teachers of science.

A fifty-four item questionnaire was developed. The items on the questionnaire consisted of statements of tasks which a science supervisor could do, and the teachers were asked to respond on a scale of opinion if they considered this task a role of the science supervisor.

The sample represented five school systems in Iowa which employ a science supervisor. Questionnaires were sent to 156 secondary science teachers and 153 elementary teachers. Ninety-five of all the …

After relative inactivity in Southern letters, there occurred what is called. the Southern Literary Renaissance. Critics have since tried to account for it. One effort is the attempt to identify basic themes in the works. One persistent theme is that of religious or moral conflict, involving a stern Calvinism and a pervasive sense of guilt. Noticed too is the element of paradox as an outstanding characteristic of the South a.nd of the Southern character. w. J. Lichens Of The Genus Parmelia From Columbia, Costa Rica, And Guatemala, Donald G. Flenniken

During the summer of 1969 a total of eighty-four species of lichens belonging to four subgenera were collected in Colombia, Costa Rica, and Guatemala. Twelve of these are described as new. The subgenus Amphigymnia is represented by thirty-six species, three of which are described as new. The subgenus Parmelia is represented by forty-one species, eight of which are described as new. The subgenera Everniiformes and Xanthoparmelia are represented by two and five species, respectively, with no new taxa recognized. The lichen product strepsiline, previously known only in the lichen Cladonia strepsilis (Ach.) Vain., was found by microchemical tests in Parmelia …

The purposes of this research are briefly stated in the following:

1. Develop an understanding of the values of an industrial process through the use of raw materials and laboratory equipment.

2. Investigate wood flour molding and its relation to industry.

3. Experiment with materials, laboratory equipment, and wood flour mixtures to produce a molded article.

4. Develop an instructional unit for use in an industrial arts curriculum.
