The 1970 class of graduating chemists received the smallest increase in starting salaries in eighteen years, according to an American Chemical Society survey reported in the current issue of Chemical and Engineering News. The salaries reported averaged only 1.6 per cent higher than last year, said David A. H. Roethel who compiled the information.

We use more Paramecium spp. in our Physiological Protozoology course at the University of Kansas than any other cells, and use them in great numbers each week, so that we wish to avoid the cost of buying them commercially. Therefore, we raise our own cultures. For over twenty years the senior author has used the easy method described here to raise large numbers of Paramecium aurelia, P. cauclatum, or P. multimicronucleatum, with consistent success.

Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy In Undergraduate Curricula 1969-70, Karl E. Goellner

In 1966 I presented a short paper describing some impressions of the status of vertebrate comparative anatomy (and embryology) in European universities (Goellner, 1968). Discussions which followed seemed to suggest that the status of these courses in the United States may be changing, and that a survey might elicit information on this matter. A basic assumption was implied, namely, that comparative anatomy had, indeed, been a traditional course in college offerings, particularly for zoology majors and for pre-medical and pre-dental students. This paper presents results of a modest survey conducted during the winter of 1969-70.

When a student enters a science class at the start of the semester, how often does the science teacher consider the student's attitude toward science? Usually our concern is about his background in science, his intelligence, or if he will be a discipline problem. These areas are perhaps important but a study by DeRose (2) also reveals the importance of attitude. He indicates that the achievement of students in a particular class may depend to a large extent on the attitude of students toward that class.
