Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn Jan 1973

Biological Modeling: A Program To Calculate The Input From Observations On The Output, James O. Osburn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the usual situation, a model is constructed, and coefficients are adjusted until the predicted response to a known stimulus agrees with the observed response to the same stimulus in the real situation. Then the model can be used to predict the response to other stimuli. The reverse situation, while it is of practical importance, has not received much attention. This is the problem of finding the stimulus which would produce an observed response. A published attempt to solve this problem contains a fundamental error. The LaPlace transform method is shown to be applicable, but it is difficult to implement. …

Somesthetic Functions In Patients With Brain Disease And Normal Subjects, Harvey S. Levin, Arthur L. Benton Jan 1973

Somesthetic Functions In Patients With Brain Disease And Normal Subjects, Harvey S. Levin, Arthur L. Benton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper summarizes the results of a series of studies of somatosensory function in normal and brain-diseased subjects that were designed to investigate: (1) neural mechanisms in tactile resolution and masking, and; (2) cerebral dominance and somesthesis. Our results are consistent with the possibility that lateral inhibition effects influence tactile resolution and masking. Additional findings suggest that the physiologic mechanisms involved in tactile masking and obscuration in healthy subjects also mediate the pathologic expressions of these phenomena shown by patients with cerebral disease. Studies of hemispheric dominance and somesthesis have indicated that patients with right hemisphere disease often demonstrate bilateral …

Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve, George E. Knudson, James Hedges Jan 1973

Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve, George E. Knudson, James Hedges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Ice Cave at Decorah, Iowa, is the largest known glaciere in North America east of the Black Hills and the subject of much international speculation during the latter half of the nineteenth century. A satisfactory theory for the formation of ice in late spring in this and other caverns was first proposed by Alois Kovarik after a series of meteorological measurements. Recent observations confirm his hypothesis. Because of its historical and geological interest and because it is the habitat of insects found nowhere else in North America, it has recently been included in the Iowa State Preserves System.

Survival Of Pen-Reared Ring-Necked Pheasants Released In Southeastern Iowa, John F. May, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1973

Survival Of Pen-Reared Ring-Necked Pheasants Released In Southeastern Iowa, John F. May, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A mass release of 2,465 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) at a single site in previously unoccupied range in southeastern Iowa in the fall of 1970 was evaluated by studying mortality, dispersal, reproduction, and population levels. The spring cock population near the release site, sampled by crowing-count surveys, remained at the same level from 1971 to 1972. A 60% drop in the estimated hen population in the same area was accompanied by a drop in winter sex ratios from 4.1 hens/cock in 1971 (first winter after release) to 1.5 in 1972. These changes are thought due to the addition of young-of-the-year …

The Current Status Of The Limnology And Bottom Fauna Of Lakes West And East Okoboji, David D. Gale, Everette E. Drevs, Michael P. Gross Jan 1973

The Current Status Of The Limnology And Bottom Fauna Of Lakes West And East Okoboji, David D. Gale, Everette E. Drevs, Michael P. Gross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lakes West and East Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, were the site of a 1970 summer investigation on the density and diversity within the macroscopic bottom organisms, physical and chemical measurements of the water and substratum chemistry study. These data on Lake West Okoboji were compared with a 1918 and 1950 study of the macroscopic bottom fauna, water analyses dating from 1934, and oxygen and temperature data from as far back as 1915. The sparse species composition of the bottom fauna has remained unchanged; however, pollution indicator tubificid worms have increased in density. Water analysis, oxygen, and temperature data are little …

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross Jan 1973

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …

The Interaction Between The Urinary Trypsin Inhibitor And Trypsin, G. J. Proksch, J. I. Routh Jan 1973

The Interaction Between The Urinary Trypsin Inhibitor And Trypsin, G. J. Proksch, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Gel filtration and disc electrophoresis were used as simple and fast techniques for the investigation of the interaction and stoichiometry between UTI and trypsin. UTI appears to possess only a single trypsin binding site. The nature of the interaction between the inhibitor and enzyme appears to be dependent on the concentration ratio of the reactants. When UTI is in excess molar concentration, a single binary complex with trypsin of mol. wt. 95,000 is observed. In the presence of a molar excess of enzyme, this macromolecule is no longer observed, but proteins of mol. wt. 41,000 and 20,000 result. The possibility …

Short-Term Effects Of Shrew Predation Upon Invertebrate Prey Sets In Prairie Ecosystem, William J. Platt, Nigel R. Blakley Jan 1973

Short-Term Effects Of Shrew Predation Upon Invertebrate Prey Sets In Prairie Ecosystem, William J. Platt, Nigel R. Blakley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During August of 1971, the effects of different densities of shrews (Sorex cinereus) upon the density and species composition of invertebrate prey sets on two prairies in northwestern Iowa were studied. Invertebrates were sampled using pitfall traps set on areas containing known shrew densities. In general, different levels of shrew predation produced certain differences in the prey sets. Increased shrew density was associated with the following prey set characteristics: 1) decreased numerical densities, but not the total biomass of prey sets; 2) decreased species dominance of prey sets; and 3) increased species diversity of the largest prey size subsets of …

Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini Jan 1973

Secondary Science Training Program Enrichment For High School Students, Edward L. Pizzini

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We live in an environment where the success of many educational programs are directly proportional to the amount of external funds appropriated. When federal funding for a program dries up, unfortunately, the program may come to an end. This end is in sight for many of the Secondary Science Training Programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation throughout the nation. However, at the University of Iowa, the SSTP programs are i n t he process of expanding beyond a firm foundation.

Some Relationships Between Morphometry And Thermal Stratification In Some Iowa Lake Basins, James Mayhew Jan 1973

Some Relationships Between Morphometry And Thermal Stratification In Some Iowa Lake Basins, James Mayhew

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thermal stratification of five man-made lakes in southern Iowa are studied in relation to basin morphometry. The lakes were Red Haw Lake, Lacey-Keosauqua Lake, Green Valley Lake, Lake Keomah and Lake Darling. Form of the water mass was compared by three mathematical indices including basin slope, area development and volume development. Strongly stratified lakes had the greatest maximum and mean depth, basin slope, area development and volume development. Lakes with unstable and temporary stratification had lower values for basin configuration. Unstratified lakes had the lowest morphometric indices. The use of these indices for predicting the tendency for stratification of a …
