Germination Ecology Of Three Chihuahuan Desert Crucifers, Larry L. Bell Jan 1975

Germination Ecology Of Three Chihuahuan Desert Crucifers, Larry L. Bell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Seeds of Lepidium lasiocarpum Nutt., Lepidium medium Greene var. medium, and Descurainea pinnata (Walt.) Britton ssp. ochroleuca (Woot.) Detling, native to the Chihuahuan Desert, were tested for their germination responses under conditions of constant and fluctuating temperatures, light and dark sensitivity, and different seed depths in soil. The effects of a three day drying period alternating with one day of moisture at field capacity was also investigated. All three species germinated optimally under fluctuating temperatures with low temperatures near 5-10°c and high temperatures near 20-25°C. L. lasiocarpum seeds responded better to fluctuating temperatures of 15°c magnitude than to fluctuations of …

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser Jan 1975

Analysis Of The Occupational Status And Choice Patterns Of Women, Terry L. Besser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There were two parts of this study. The first part involved a determination of the status of women. Occupation, education and income criterion were used and it was concluded that educationally and occupationally, women were increasing their status relative to men. But the income of working women in contrast to men employed in the same fields was at an all time low. The central locus of the low occupational status of women was seen to be in women's continual choice of pursuing traditional female jobs. This leads to the second part of this study which was concerned with why women …

Student Programs In Retrospect, Brian J. Awbrey Jan 1974

Student Programs In Retrospect, Brian J. Awbrey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Science may often be considered a discipline of absolutes and systematized knowledge, but science education in Iowa need not be so. To the young and enthusiastic Iowa student scientist there are a number of educational opportunities available that are exciting and relevant, as well as several which take place outside of the classroom. These extracurricular opportunities are designed to allow the secondary science student to realize a few of his educational aspirations while interacting directly with other professionals and student scientists from the state. Since I have been involved personally with some of the unique Iowa science educational opportunities as …

Professor George M. Maxwell Makes Magic - And Learning Engineering Becomes Fun, Jack Burke

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The University of Wisconsin-Madison associate professor of metallurgical and mining engineering teaches materials science both on the campus and around Wisconsin, talking and putting on demonstrations before high school and college students, bankers, businessmen, dentists, doctors, secretaries and others. Give him five minutes or a college semester, and he will try to convert you into a knowledgeable user of materials. His approach starts off with familiar basic processes of chemistry and physics and builds from there.

Model Rocketry - An Excellent Teaching Aid, Edward L. Pizzini

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As unlikely as it may seem, hobbies can serve as a powerful aid in the teaching of science. They not only provide concrete examples but capitalize on the student's interest. Model rocketry activities are an excellent example of such "high involvement" learning hobbies.

Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp Jan 1974

Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept "meeting the needs of the individual student" has been paid lip service for years within educational circles. Whether this has in fact been carried out to any appreciable extent is still open to question. Since the inception of the Secondary Science Training Programs (SSTP) by the National Science Foundation in 1959, hundreds of colleges and universities have sponsored special science programs for high-ability students. However, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare stated in November, 1973, that fewer than four percent of this country's talented secondary students were being exposed to programs commensurate with their needs (Williams, 1973). …

The Mini-Patt Approach To Individualizing Instruction, Jimmy R. Jenkins, Gerald H. Krockover Jan 1974

The Mini-Patt Approach To Individualizing Instruction, Jimmy R. Jenkins, Gerald H. Krockover

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the past, the preparation of audio-tutorial tapes has been tedious and time-consuming. In order to produce a commercial quality audio-tutorial tape, the instructor had to outline the format of the presentation, gather the necessary materials, and prepare a rough tape. This tape was then transcribed into a script, the script was edited (usually by the instructor) and a final tape for instructional purposes was prepared from the edited script. Usually the above sequence of steps required approximately eight to ten hours, which would be spread over a two- or three-day period, with the end product being a 30-minute reel-to-reel …

To Dye Or Not To Dye, A. C. Haman Jan 1974

To Dye Or Not To Dye, A. C. Haman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the beginning there was water and rock, but as plant life evolved, the globe became more colorful. Cool greens gradually enveloped the earth as successive waves of mosses, ferns, conifers and angiosperms conquered the land. In addition new pigments evolved providing artistic man with new mood-creating dyes with which to color his existence. Primitive man utilized dyes to color his skin to frighten his enemies and increase his prestige. Greek ladies, dissatisfied with the color of their hair, used buckthorn, Rhamnus, to stain their hair yellow and add to their charms. European aristocrats of the Middle Ages, traveling …

Selected Outcomes Of A Summer Institute For High School Biology Teachers, Melton E. Golmon Jan 1974

Selected Outcomes Of A Summer Institute For High School Biology Teachers, Melton E. Golmon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The 1972 University of Iowa Summer Institute for High School Biology Teachers was designed to assist participants in implementing the course, Biological Science: Molecules to Man (Blue Version), developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS). The program consisted of eight weeks of classroom instruction and was supported by the National Science Foundation. Instruction was planned to provide the participants with an opportunity to improve their competence in biological subject matter and to become acquainted with teaching strategies inherent in materials produced by BSCS. In order to accomplish these objectives, participants were enrolled in three related courses.
