History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch Jan 1975

History Of The Zoology Section Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Paul Meglitsch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the early years, all papers presented at the annual meetings of the Iowa Academy of Science were delivered at general session. Evidently a number of members felt that they would be better able to discuss and appreciate the papers if they were given at sectional meetings. This had the further advantage of permitting the inclusion of more papers in the program. Professor L. S. Ross, then secretary of the Academy, suggested in 1914 that papers be given at sectional meetings. In 1916 this was done for the first time.

As one of the original sections, the Zoology Section has …

Blood Parasites From Birds Of The Lake Okoboji Region, Iowa, John N. Farmer, David H. Vesole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Hematozoa are reported from 171 birds, representing 7 orders of 20 families and 33 species, all collected in Dickinson County, northwest Iowa, with the majority of animals being collected at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Milford, Iowa. Blood parasites were observed in 67 birds (39.2%), with an incidence as follows: Haemoproteus sp., 45 (26.3%); Leucocytozoon sp., 19 (11.1%); Plasmodium sp., 4 (2.3%); Trypanosoma 3 (1.7%); and microfilariae, 29 (16.9%). An evaluation of these results indicates a dramatic decrease in the incidence of blood parasites later in the summer. The presence of parasites early in the spring is considered to be a …

Trends In Secondary Science Enrollments In Iowa, Gary Downs

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Enrollment data were collected from the district administration for the five reported years starting with the 1968-69 school year. The data for the 1973-74 school year were collected at the school level. Collection at the school level should provide a more representative data bank for the academic programs. All the science offerings were grouped into the following seven categories: biology, chemistry, earth science, enrichment science, general science, physical science, and physics. It is interesting to note that in the 1968-69 data collection only 19 different courses were reported. In the succeeding years, 25, 56, 71, 74, and 96 were reported …

Student Philosophy In Science Class, Owen Primavera

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As a science teacher I know that facts are vital parts of teaching chemistry or biology, and that the better students understand chemical and biological systems the better they will understand how organisms function. But more than facts seems to be needed to teach ecology.

A Computer Assisted Environmental Education Resource Program, Sara K. Smerud, Gary Thomas, Tim Keenan, Dale Nimrod Jan 1975

A Computer Assisted Environmental Education Resource Program, Sara K. Smerud, Gary Thomas, Tim Keenan, Dale Nimrod

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Northeast Iowa is an exceptionally beautiful and unique region. Environmental education in the schools and communities of this area is a vital factor in enabling citizens to take a reasoned approach to the conservation and management of this region. Two observations precipitated the action which resulted in the project described in this paper. The first was that the local resources were vulnerable to being utilized in a potentially harmful manner and secondly, teachers did not seem to be taking full advantage of their local resources in their classroom instruction.

History Of Studies On The Iowa Vascular Flora, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1975

History Of Studies On The Iowa Vascular Flora, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although a manual of the vascular plants of Iowa has yet to be written, many botanists have contributed to a thorough floristic survey of the state, and most of the difficult plant families have been studied taxonomically. The number of vascular plant species is estimated at over 1,800. It would probably require five or more years of concentrated effort to produce an accurate, comprehensive manual of the Iowa flora. A listing of 238 selected references on the Iowa vascular flora is presented.

The Iowa Academy Of Science: 1875-1975, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1975

The Iowa Academy Of Science: 1875-1975, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In tracing the beginnings of the Iowa Academy of Science, Jacob Swisher acknowledged in 1930 that the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Dubuque in 1872 probably had much to do with the formation of the first Iowa Academy in 1875. The Dubuque meeting was the first meeting of the AAAS west of the Mississippi River, and it was at that meeting that many of the charter members of the first Academy began to develop a closer association with one another. An excursion across Iowa following the AAAS meeting touched various points of scientific interest …

The Iowa Academy Of Science Parish Farm: A Dream About Tomorrow, Harry T. Horner Jr. Jan 1975

The Iowa Academy Of Science Parish Farm: A Dream About Tomorrow, Harry T. Horner Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A gift may be given for many reasons and what the receiver does with it may depend on many things. The Iowa Academy of Science Parish Farm fits this situation and serves as an appropriate focal point to tell a story-a story with a beginning and a developing plot, but one whose ending is yet to be written, if ever. The Farm story represents a relatively small part of the Academy's first hundred years, yet its potential is great for becoming a significant and unique part of the second hundred years. Just like those who may excitedly look back in …

Mycology And Plant Pathology In Iowa From 1854 To 1974, George Knaphus Jan 1975

Mycology And Plant Pathology In Iowa From 1854 To 1974, George Knaphus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A historical survey such as this cannot be satisfying to the author. It demands too much compression of the incompressible and dictates deletion of many interesting incidents. A mountain of file cards and notes may translate into a tedious listing of authors, titles and sources. It may, on the other hand, capture the spirit of the times and the people. This summary of mycology and plant pathology in Iowa from 1854 to the present tries to do the latter. It is documented sparsely and informally, with most of the information coming from the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science, …

Development Of Air Passages, And Crystal Distribution, In The Stem Of Bacopa Caroliniana (Scrophulariaceae), Nels R. Lersten, James L. Gunning Jan 1975

Development Of Air Passages, And Crystal Distribution, In The Stem Of Bacopa Caroliniana (Scrophulariaceae), Nels R. Lersten, James L. Gunning

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

About 20 vertical air passages occur in each internode, separated at each node by a solid diaphragm of parenchyma, in which leaf traces depart. Air passages are schizogenous and begin to form just below the shoot apex. This may be the first report of druse crystals in Scrophulariaceae. Druses become visible in the second nodal plate below the shoot apex. In the mature stem, druses are more common in nodes, but they also occur in internodes. The stele appears to be an ectophloic siphonostele, without separate vascular bundles at any stage of development. This appears to be a good species …

Fern Reproduction At Woodman Hollow, Central Iowa: Preliminary Observations And A Consideration Of The Feasibility Of Studying Fern Reproductive Biology In Nature, Donald R. Farrar, Robert D. Gooch Jan 1975

Fern Reproduction At Woodman Hollow, Central Iowa: Preliminary Observations And A Consideration Of The Feasibility Of Studying Fern Reproductive Biology In Nature, Donald R. Farrar, Robert D. Gooch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Field observations of spore availability, gametophyte establishment and survival, and sporophyte production were made over a one-year period. Maximum spore release for most species occurred shortly after spore maturation in mid to late summer, but some spores remained on sporophyte fronds through the winter and were available for germination the following spring. Gametophytes of Cystopteris fragilis, Woodsia obtusa and Adiantum pedatum became established in late summer and fall. Production of sporophytes occurred both in fall and in the following spring. Both gametophytes and juvenile sporophytes survived the winter in relatively unchanged condition. Results indicate that it is feasible and important …

The Oldest Iowa Tree, Ii: Eastern Red Cedar On Cedar River Bluffs, Roger Q. Landers, Dolores Graf Jan 1975

The Oldest Iowa Tree, Ii: Eastern Red Cedar On Cedar River Bluffs, Roger Q. Landers, Dolores Graf

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When Anderson (1938) described the oldest tree in Iowa, he was using wood from an eastern red cedar, Juniperus virginiana L., which had originated ca. 1516 and died ca. 1885, presumably near the Schramm family cottage on West Lake Okoboji. Our sample, also from eastern red cedar, is a core from a tree growing on a steep limestone bluff overlooking the Cedar River in Palisades-Kepler State Park. The 16 cm (6 1/4 in.) core, taken in April, 1965, by Graf and R. Wm. Poulter, was set aside then because the slender tree showed little outward sign of old age compared …

Germination Of Prairie Forbs Liatris Aspera Michx. And Amorpha Canescens Pursh, Lewis Marshall Churbuck Jan 1975

Germination Of Prairie Forbs Liatris Aspera Michx. And Amorpha Canescens Pursh, Lewis Marshall Churbuck

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Seed of Liatris aspera and Amorpha canescens were hand collected from the Mark Sand Prairie in Eastern Iowa during the fall of 1973 and 1974. There was no significant difference in the viability between one and two year old seed with both species. There was no significant difference in the total germination at 21 C for L. aspera and A. canescens. A. canescens required a significantly longer period of time for the two year old seed to germinate. The most rapid, regular and complete germination of L. aspera occurred at 21 and 27 c. significantly reduced at 16 and 32 …

A Study Of The Classification Systems For Curriculum Laboratories, Maxine M. Wegner Jan 1975

A Study Of The Classification Systems For Curriculum Laboratories, Maxine M. Wegner

Graduate Research Papers

The State of Iowa, through a bill reorganizing the intermediate county education systems into fifteen intermediate area education agencies providing special education, media, and auxiliary services, has mandated that the media division shall provide a professional library and curriculum laboratory for the area that it serves.

The area media center is not a new concept in Iowa as there are presently sixteen such centers in the state

that provide a variety of services to the schools in their area with a few centers providing curriculum laboratories for the teachers in their area. These sixteen centers 4 became a part of …

Technology Transfer: The Adoption Of Gobar Gas Generators By Subsistence Farmers In Puebla, Mexico, Robert E. Meyer Jan 1975

Technology Transfer: The Adoption Of Gobar Gas Generators By Subsistence Farmers In Puebla, Mexico, Robert E. Meyer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the significant characteristics of modern American agriculture is its rapidly changing technology. New practices and techniques are constantly being developed by research agencies. Society benefits from these research findings only to the extent that they are diffused to and used by farmers.

One of the important problems inherent in a rapidly changing economy is that of effectively communicating scientific information to the potential user of that information. Much research has been done in recent years to determine the nature of the process by which new ideas and practices are diffused from their source of origin and ultimately implemented. …

Perception And Production Of /R/ In Four-Year-Old Children: A Comparison Of Two Points In Time, Mary Pamela Hauser Jan 1975

Perception And Production Of /R/ In Four-Year-Old Children: A Comparison Of Two Points In Time, Mary Pamela Hauser

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The literature suggests a relationship between the perception and production of speech sounds. Data has been gathered from normal and sound-defective children who were three years, five years, and older. No comparative research has been done with four-year-old children. Furthermore, no longitudinal data has been gathered on a single group of children. This study was essentially a replication of the Bronsema (1974) research. Specifically, it compared the self-perception and other-perception performances of Bronsema's research population, in 1975, the year following the Bronsema study. The examiner tested the children, who were now four years old, and compared the 1975 inter-group results, …
