History Of The University Of Northern Iowa Museum, 1890-1975, Pauline L. Sauer

Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)

The museum at the University of Northern Iowa has been an important adjunct of the institution since the last decade of the nineteenth century. The first 65 or so years of its existence are reviewed by the late Mr. Fred Cram, then archivist at the Iowa State Teachers College, in a 15-page paper, “The Museum at the Iowa State Normal School,” prepared in 1955 at the request of Dr. Emmett J. Cable, curator of the museum. The information on this era, summarized below, is gleaned from this paper unless otherwise noted.

Exotic Food From Fermented Milk, Robert C. Goss Jan 1975

Exotic Food From Fermented Milk, Robert C. Goss

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Whether prepared or bought at the market, yogurt is a dairy product made from milk -- cow, mare, sow, goat, buffalo, etc. Bacteria cultures of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus are added to the milk with the result that the milk sugar is split into lactic acid. The casein, lactalbumin and milk proteins are broken down into peptones and amino acids. Finished yogurt has about 200,000,000 bacteria per ml and is rich in the vitamin B complex. Yogurt making is a manifestation of microbial ecology.

School books are notorious carriers of potentially dangerous bacteria. Books that are handed on to children in one class to their successors in the next year pose a considerable health hazard, according to the Institute for Educational Media, Frankfurt, Germany.

Thanks, I Needed That!, Stanley D. Whelchel Jan 1975

Thanks, I Needed That!, Stanley D. Whelchel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Each year, when high school students register for their next year's schedule of classes, the guidance counselors and teachers of science and mathematics hear the statement, "I don't need science or mathematics for what I plan to do after I graduate." It seems almost impossible to change their minds. One usually says, "You will need it when you get to college or to technical school." But this statement usually falls upon deaf ears because students have made up their minds that in the fields of work to which they aspire they will not need any additional mathematics or science. Besides, …

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow Jan 1975

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Those of us who have participated in the curriculum movement over the past decade have seen a profound change in the orientation of curriculum makers during this period. In the wave of science-based curriculum projects that followed the launching of Sputnik in 1957 there was little explicit attention given to the social purposes of instruction. The emphasis in those years was on the transmission of knowledge in the most economical form through the identification of central ideas, and on the invention of pedagogical techniques that supported and reinforced the child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. One of the most …

Do We Misuse Animals In School Science Projects?, John A. Hoyt Jan 1975

Do We Misuse Animals In School Science Projects?, John A. Hoyt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A 17-year-old Iowa girl won a trip to the 1974 International Science and Engineering Fair by grafting skin onto 12 mice in the basement of her home after only talking with a veterinarian. One mouse died, one sloughed off the graft, and the others were killed by the student with an overdose of ether. A 15-year-old Kentucky boy won a trip to the same fair by trapping three squirrels in a park, confining them to cages in his basement, and giving them electric shocks over a period of several months to learn if they would respond to visual tests. This …

Science Teaching And The Iowa Academy Of Science, Robert E. Yager, Delma E. Harding Jan 1975

Science Teaching And The Iowa Academy Of Science, Robert E. Yager, Delma E. Harding

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Science Teaching Section of the Academy can boast of the largest membership of any section at this point in time - the hundredth year for the Iowa Academy of Science. In terms of the normal lifetime of man, a hundred years is a major span of time. Centennials should afford an opportunity for reviewing accomplishments and history, as well as an opportunity for celebration, reflection, and focus upon the future. This is such an attempt with respect to science teaching and the Iowa Academy of Science.

The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt Jan 1975

The Vertebrate Fauna Of The Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, William J. Platt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vertebrate fauna of the Cayler Prairie Preserve, Dickinson County, Iowa, has been compiled from field observations and study between 1971 and 1974. Seventy-two species, including four amphibians, seven reptiles, 35 birds, and 26 mammals, were recorded. The diverse fauna results from the variety of habitats contained in the preserve, as well as the size of the preserve. One key member of the fauna is the badger (Taxidea taxus), which creates microhabitats favorable for small vertebrates while digging for ground squirrels. Few adventive vertebrates have successfully invaded the prairie, and the fauna represents a sizable fragment (larger vertebrates are absent) …

Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon Jan 1975

Assessing Laboratory Instruction In Biology, Melton E. Golmon

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Biology curriculum developments of the last decade have emphasized the importance of laboratory instruction in the learning environment. Not only do most students enjoy laboratory work but it provides them with an opportunity to make first hand observations, manipulate equipment, collect data, organize data, and draw their own conclusions concerning this information. One teaching strategy for laboratory instruction developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) creates a setting in which a question can be formulated that may be answered as a result of laboratory work. Special instruction is given for specific laboratory techniques and skills when necessary but major …

Algae And Energy, James J. Hungerford Jan 1975

Algae And Energy, James J. Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The extent to which algae contribute to human welfare is often forgotten, ignored or unappreciated. Many types of algae serve as bases in commercially prepared foods and condiments. Algal products are used in cosmetics, textiles, pharmaceuticals and paints. In Asia, algae are often mixed and served with rice and fish to supplement the human diet. In coastal areas of the world, kelps are often chopped as food for livestock. The alga Poryphyra is cultivated in Japan to supply a 65 million pound annual market.

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1975

The History Of Plant Ecology In Iowa As Reflected In The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All plant ecology papers published in the Proceedings from 1887 to 1973 were identified. On the average only 1.4 papers were published per year. An examination of the number of papers published in successive five-year intervals indicates that there were three distinct periods in the history of plant ecology in Iowa with three individuals dominating each period: 1887-1931 - L. H. Pammel, B. Shimek, and Ada Hayden; 1932-1951 - H. S. Conard, J. M. Aikman, and Ada Hayden; 1952-1971 - J. M. Aikman, R. F. Thorne, and R. Q. Landers. There have been very few active plant ecologists in Iowa, …
