Mourning Dove Nesting Success In Artificial And Natural Nests In Central Minnesota, Gary Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Mourning dove (Zenaidura macroura) nesting success in artificial and natural nests was investigated in 1974 on seven study areas in central Minnesota. Nesting success in artificial nests was significantly greater (P<0.05) than that in natural nests. Of 69 nesting attempts in artificial nests, 60.9% (42) were successful. Of 224 nesting attempts in natural nests, 44.2% (99) were successful. Sixty-nine nesting attempts were made in 59 of the 203 artificial nests installed. This represents a 34.0% rate of utilization.

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum Jan 1976

Man And His Technology, Clifford G. Mccollum

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

(Presented as a part of the Symposium on Man at the Centennial Program of the Iowa Academy of Science, Ames, Iowa April 18, 1975.)

Alexis Carrel, a Nobel laureate of 1912, published a book in 1935 that he titled Man the Unknown. This might have been an appropriate theme for this paper. As Carrel pointed out 40 years ago, although there is much that is known about man, there is need of a much more profound knowledge of ourselves. And not only a knowledge of man as an isolated fragment in the cosmos, but, perhaps even more importantly, …

Current Status Of The Woodcock In Iowa, Eugene D. Kloglan, H. Lee Gladfelter, Robert G. Sheets, Gene Hlavka Jan 1976

Current Status Of The Woodcock In Iowa, Eugene D. Kloglan, H. Lee Gladfelter, Robert G. Sheets, Gene Hlavka

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa is at the western edge of the continental range of woodcock. Because of their scarcity in the state, little interest has been shown in them. They are a prized game bird in many states in the eastern half of the country. In 1961, Iowa began participating in the annual U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spring woodcock census, which has increased efforts to learn more about this species in the state. The spring singing-ground census of courting males revealed that a low population of breeding woodcock exists in suitable habitat, primarily limited to the eastern one-third of the state. Thirty …

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson Jan 1976

The Nature Of Man As Identified From The Study Of The History Of Heart And Circulation, Leland P. Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Generic man has evidenced curiosity concerning self and the external world since the beginning of recorded history. How is the external world related to man and how does it affect man's nature? Possible answers to these understandings involve both objective and subjective experiences. The objective world can be perceived by others and verified. Similar interpretations are often functions of common environments and educational dogma. Subjective experience is a private matter which may deny communication, or if communicated, may deny common interpretation. It is hoped that primarily through focusing upon objective experiences as recorded in the history of the development of …

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk Jan 1976

Zonation, Competitive Displacement And Standing Crop Of Northwest Iowa Fen Communities, A. G. Van Der Valk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Well developed Iowa fens contain three distinct vegetation zones (border zone, sedge mat zone and discharge zone). On the average, the above ground standing crop of these zones is 425, 197 and 528 g/m2 respectively. Species growing on these fens show three basic distributional patterns: (1) they grow in the border and discharge zones; (2) they grow primarily in the sedge mat zone or (3) they grow in all three zones. Individual plants of species growing in the border and/or discharge zone are on the average 1.6 to 2.7 times taller and weigh 1.8 to 5.4 times more than …

Ovary Wall And Pericarp Ontogeny In Lychnis Alba (Caryophyllaceae), William J. Oostenink Jan 1976

Ovary Wall And Pericarp Ontogeny In Lychnis Alba (Caryophyllaceae), William J. Oostenink

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The development of the Lychnis alba ovary has been studied to provide original data regarding the rapid increase in ovary size which follows pollination. Preliminary study of the development of the ovary of an unpollinated flower has shown that this development follows a uniformly regular pattern quite unlike the rapid enlargement following pollination. The development of the unpollinated flower's ovary was traced from the time it was 0.3mm in length to the time it had attained maturity at approximately 7.0mm in length. At this point natural abscission occurs if the flower is not pollinated. A maximum ovary/fruit length of 15.2 …

The Vegetation Of Stinson Prairie, Kossuth County, Iowa, David C. Glenn-Lewin Jan 1976

The Vegetation Of Stinson Prairie, Kossuth County, Iowa, David C. Glenn-Lewin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stinson Prairie, a 12.5 ha native preserve, is a rich grassland exhibiting the full range of prairie vegetation. Situated on a rolling moraine, topographic differences produce four main vegetation types: dry prairie, mesic prairie, swales and pothholes. Species richness is highest in the mesic prairie and lowest in the swales and pothholes. Stinson Prairie, although small, is well preserved, and compared to Kalsow Prairie (mesic) and Sheeder Prairie (dry), shows a well-developed vegetation gradient. Cypripedium candidum, an orchid rare in Iowa, is found on Stinson Prairie.
