In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

In Defense Of Ambiguity, Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

If I recall correctly, one of the first adjectives I learned as a freshman in college was ambiguous. I do not remember looking it up in any dictionary when I learned it after the first mid-term tests. It was then enough for me to learn that if a professor's test-questions were deemed "ambiguous," I could excuse my failure to answer test-questions accurately and blame the professor for having hidden from me what I should have learned and understood. In my years since, as a professor, I find that the freshmen and upper classmen and even graduate students are still sophomoric …

Lecture Versus Discussion In The Study Of Sophomore Library Skills, Sandri F. Gehrke Jan 1976

Lecture Versus Discussion In The Study Of Sophomore Library Skills, Sandri F. Gehrke

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to determine which method of instruction--the lecture or the small group discussion--would achieve the best learning results as far as knowledge of certain unfamiliar materials was concerned.

Specifically, the author of this research study tried to answer this questions When an instructor is teaching "selected" reference books to average-ability sophomores in an English 10 library skills unit at Fort Dodge Senior High School, Fort Dodge, Iowa, which method of instruction--the lecture or the small group discussion--will achieve the best learning results as measured by an author- constructed post-test?

In this research study the author …

Nitrogen Metabolism In Acanthamoeba Castellanii: Amino Acid Consumption And Composition Patterns, Warren D. Dolphin Jan 1976

Nitrogen Metabolism In Acanthamoeba Castellanii: Amino Acid Consumption And Composition Patterns, Warren D. Dolphin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Quantitative analyses of the amino acids in the culture media before and after population growth demonstrate that Acanthamoeba castellanii selectively utilizes amino acids from Adam's defined medium (DM2) and Neff's optimal growth medium, but no amino acid is completely depleted during normal population growth. The cellular amino acid content varies for amoebae grown in the two media. The most common total cellular amino acids are alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, and leucine. The most common free amino acids in the intracellular pools are alanine and proline. In DM2, NH3 is produced at a rate …

Immobilization Of Adult Bull Bison With Etorphine, Arnold O. Haugen, Melvin J. Swenson, Milo J. Shult, Stephen J. Petersburg Jan 1976

Immobilization Of Adult Bull Bison With Etorphine, Arnold O. Haugen, Melvin J. Swenson, Milo J. Shult, Stephen J. Petersburg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Between 1967 and 1972, 66 bison (Bison bison) (Linnaeus) bulls, 1 cow and 1 calf were dosed with the narcotic etorphine (M-99) on open range at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, Valentine, Nebraska and at Wind Cave National Park, Hot Springs, South Dakota. Etorphine administered at levels of 5 to 6.3 mcg/lb of body weight brought the animals to sternal recumbency. Underdosing was associated with long, difficult pursuit and considerable chance of not apprehending the drugged animal. Adding of methotrimeprazine (Levoprome) up to 74.88 mcg/lb of body weight to the etorphine dosages for some old bulls seemed to have no …

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky Jan 1976

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Science Foundations program at the University of Iowa consists of a sequence of general science courses designed specifically for the non-science student. The program is unique both in course content and instructional strategy. Recognizing that student backgrounds and needs differ greatly between the science and non-science major, the Foundations program is offered as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based science courses. Whereas the lecture-based courses emphasize the recall and application of factual material, Science Foundations stresses problem- solving strategies based on laboratory experience. Consequently, practically all of a student's time is devoted to "hands-on" activity with problems in the …

Decline Of Hackberry Attributed To Ambient Herbicide Drift, Robert H. Hibbs Jan 1976

Decline Of Hackberry Attributed To Ambient Herbicide Drift, Robert H. Hibbs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

For several years a decline of hackberry (Celtis occidentalis L.) leading to eventual tree mortality has been evident in northwest Iowa. A search for the cause of the decline in trees in and near Odebolt, in Sac County, Iowa, has included investigation of soil abnormalities, nutrient deficiencies, pathological or viral vectors, entomological agents, climatological extremes, and physiological or environmental factors. The decline could not be attributed to any disease or insect problem. Recurring symptoms were those of herbicide damage. Indications of herbicide damage included cupped, chlorotic leaves, lack of apical dominance, enlarged …

Neochonetes Granulifer, An Explosive Opportunist From The Stull Shale (Upper Pennsylvanian) In Southwestern Iowa, Stephen Emanuel Jacobs Jan 1976

Neochonetes Granulifer, An Explosive Opportunist From The Stull Shale (Upper Pennsylvanian) In Southwestern Iowa, Stephen Emanuel Jacobs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The brachiopod Neochonetes granulifer (Owen) is inferred to be an “opportunistic species" of the Stull Shale Member, Kanwaka Formation (Upper Pennsylvanian) in southwestern Iowa. The "opportunism" of this species is restricted to Horizon B of the Stull, but this restriction is evidently masked by the abnormally high number of N.granulifer in Horizons C and D, its shells inferred to have been reworked from B. The presence of this species as an opportunist is characteristic of the high physiological stress on the community of Horizon B as evidenced by the low brachiopod (and overall) diversity. Neochonetes granulifer satisfies most of Levinton' …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1975-76, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1976

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1975-76, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beginning in 1975, with a report on the observance of the Academy's centennial, the Annual Report took on a different format, its content consisting of the essence of committee activity rather than the detailed reports themselves. In addition, it contained such legal necessities as the minutes of the Annual Business Meeting, including election results, financial statements, constitution and bylaws revisions, and the membership roster. The Annual Report becomes, then, a running history of the Academy on a year-to-year basis. At the fall meeting of the Board of Directors in 1975 it was decided that the Annual Report be published in …

Effects Of An Acoustic Stimulus Upon Growth, Antibody Synthesis And Leukocyte Values, Calvin R. Koehler, David R. Griffith, Charles J. Ellis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Physiologic effects of an acoustic stimulus of 1.0 Khz at 96 db(A) upon female hooded rats are discussed. Six possible reasons are offered for failure to attain statistical significance, except in intermediate aspects, between control and experimental animals.

Studies On Silica-Scaled Chrysophytes From Iowa, James L. Wee, John D. Dodd, Daniele Wujek Jan 1976

Studies On Silica-Scaled Chrysophytes From Iowa, James L. Wee, John D. Dodd, Daniele Wujek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

References in the literature to the silica-scaled chrysophytes of Iowa are few and, since the advent of the electron microscope, identifications of taxa in this group are no longer considered valid without accompanying electron micrographs. Using scanning electron microscopy for critical identifications, eight taxa genera of the Synuraceae are reported here including the first known report of the genus Paraphysomonas from Iowa. From the other two genera, Mallomonas and Synura, only one of the taxa in this paper, Mallomonas pseudocoronata, has been reported from Iowa previously. Mallomonas acaroides var. striatula, M. tonsurata, M. tonsurata var. alpina, M. teilingii, M. pseudocorcnata, …

The Development Of Criteria For Evaluating Junior Premarital Pregnancy Novels, Connie Jo Barto Jan 1976

The Development Of Criteria For Evaluating Junior Premarital Pregnancy Novels, Connie Jo Barto

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to develop criteria that could be used by classroom teachers and media specialists to judge the quality of junior premarital pregnancy novels. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate by means of model critiques how the criteria could be applied. The professional literature reflected five categories of conern relating to junior premarital pregnancy novels: adolescent sexuality, didacticism, sexism, pat solutions, and stereotyped adults. The researcher selected a panel of six experts to comment on the categories of concern and to identify the ten most widely read titles in the genre. The panel included practicing media …

Notes On Iowa Diatoms Xi: A Study Of The Genus Pinnularia From Dead Man's Lake, C. L. Christensen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Forty-three (43) taxa of Pinnularia collected from a Sphagnum bog in north central Iowa are added to the state records for this genus. The numbers of Pinnularia entities are generally much larger in this habitat than in other Iowa habitats. Furthermore, the size ranges of many taxa exceed those given in published descriptions. As of 1972, published records for the state number sixty-four (64) taxa in this genus.

A Study Of Two Facultative Lagoons For Municipal Wastewater Treatment In Iowa, Kevin N. Nelson, Lavene K. Payne, Ruth B. Wildman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two 2-celled facultative lagoons, comparable in design and serving small communities in rural Iowa, were studied for seven consecutive summer weeks. Chemical and physical parameters of water quality were monitored in samples taken from influent and effluent structures and at two depths and three to six locations in each cell. The composition and density of the phytoplankton was monitored, and total and fecal coliform counts were made. A diurnal study showed wide fluctuations in the chemical composition of influent wastewater. The quality of effluent water was comparable for the two lagoons although one was loaded to design capacity and the …

Can-On-Can Cannon, Peter H. Sweedy Jan 1976

Can-On-Can Cannon, Peter H. Sweedy

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Having had success using a student constructed catapult last year in my physics classes in demonstrating the principles and mathematics of projectile motion, I was ready to repeat the experience, when a student reminded me of a cannon I made when I was younger.
