Notes On The Odonata Of The Cedar-Iowa River Basin, M. S. Hummel, A. C. Haman
Notes On The Odonata Of The Cedar-Iowa River Basin, M. S. Hummel, A. C. Haman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Past and present studies of the Cedar-Iowa River Basin indicate that 82 species of Odonata inhabit the basin. Of the 82 species reported since the tum of the century, 60 species were collected from 1971 -1975; the remaining species were recorded prior to 1920. Two species, Aeshna canadensis Walker and Aeshna interrupta lineata Walker, collected in 1975, represent new records for the state of Iowa. Distribution maps of the 82 species reported within the basin are included.

Five New Species Of Orchesella (Collembola: Entomobryidae), K. A. Christiansen, B. E. Tucker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This paper describes 5 species of the genus Orchesella (Collembola: Entomobryidae) new to science. The chaetotaxy of the abdomen as well as the antennal pin seta are used systematically for the first time in the taxonomy of the genus.
Seasonal Variation In Weight-Length Relationships Of Largemouth Bass In A 3-Hectare Reservoir, Michael J. Vandenavyle, Kenneth D. Carlander
Seasonal Variation In Weight-Length Relationships Of Largemouth Bass In A 3-Hectare Reservoir, Michael J. Vandenavyle, Kenneth D. Carlander
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Lengths and weights of age 0, I, and II largemouth bass were collected during two growing seasons to evaluate seasonal trends in weight-length relationships. Average K(TL) declined significantly between August 1971 and April 1972, but significant growth in length occurred during the interval. In 1972, K(TL) increased from April to July and remained high into November. Condition was better in 1972 than in 1971 when the population density was greater. Monthly estimates of the coefficient of condition, K(TL), and weight-length regressions were both required to interpret seasonal changes. Weight-length regressions calculated over longer collection periods in which K(TL …

Batrachospermum Roth. (Rhodophyta), A Genus Of Red Algae New To Iowa, Donald R. Roeder, James H. Peck
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Batrachospermum, a floridean red alga, is formally reported from Iowa. Populations have been observed by several workers at nine localities in eight counties: Black Hawk, Bremer, Des Moines, Dickinson, Dubuque, Emmet, Hancock, and Webster. The habitats include permanent and intermittent streams, a distrophic lake, and prairie marshes. To date, the species include B. ectocarpum Sir. from a stream in Webster County , and an undescribed species from a prairie marsh in Black Hawk County. A discussion of the taxonomy and occurrence of Batrachospermum in Iowa in presented. With this …

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Until the mid-1950's it was assumed by biologists and physicians that the only amoeba that endangered human comfort is the one that infects the digestive tract, causing amoebic dysentery in the susceptible and unwary tourist exposed to its more virulent varieties. Although that one, known to biologists as Entamoeba histolytica, sometimes escapes to the other parts of the body to cause sores and disturbances, it rarely causes death of its host, being a generally "well-behaved" parasite.
In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead
In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Often science educators feel that career education belongs in the Industrial Arts or Vocational Agriculture or Home Economics classroom but not in the Science classroom. Since Sputnik, science educators have been selling their course offerings by talking about the vast technological society in which we live and how the job market needs scientifically literate workers. Too often, however, these same educators view career education only as the production of pre-professional scientists. They seem not to include nurses, laboratory technicians and other applied fields in science vocations.
Puzzles And Piaget, David Mccalley
Puzzles And Piaget, David Mccalley
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Personal experience has shown that student learning problems may often be analyzed intuitively and effectively through personal interviews. However, recent work by Anton Lawson and his colleagues at the University of California at Berkeley has produced a more analytical tool, based on Piagetian Reasoning Theory, to help educators understand how students operate men tally. This tool consists of a series of specially designed puzzles, the response to which, gives clues to understanding the functional basis for students' thought processes.
Congratulations!
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The Editorial Board of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal wishes to congratulate the six Iowa science educators recognized by the Iowa Academy of Science for their excellence in science teaching: Sandra Waltz (Norwalk); Elwood Garlock (Cedar Rapids); Stanley Whelchel (Waterloo); George Davis (Reinbeck); Gary Jensen (Roland); Glendon Peterson (Le Mars).

A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly
A Brief Look At Individualized Instruction, James L. Kelly
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
If one examines the terminology that is a part of education today, it becomes evident that the teacher is responsible for more than factual presentations. Accountability, humanism, credibility, and personalization are just a few of the new terms being applied to the teachers working vocabulary. All teachers, including science teachers, are constantly being asked to meet the needs of all their students, not just a selected few. This is especially true now, since nationwide science class enrollments are declining. Individualized instruction is a part of the new terminology and, in a limited amount of space, it is also the topic …

Come To The Health Fair, Owen Primavera
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the spring of 1975 the Milford High School Science Club planned to sponsor a Health Fair which would involve free medical services for the community. The fair was preceded by a health survey which attempted to administer a questionnaire to all residents of Milford, Iowa. The object of the survey was to determine the immunization status of the community in order to assess the need for conducting a Health Fair.
Dragonfly Migration
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Migration of birds in the spring and fall is a well known phenomenon. However, migration of insects is not as well known except for a few spectacular examples such as that of the Monarch butterfly. Actually, quite a number of insects migrate and one easily observed migrant is the large Green Darner dragonfly (Anax junius).
