Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1976-77, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1977

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1976-77, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report continues the practice of writing a running history of the Academy on a year-to-year basis, begun in 1975. The reports of committees are kept on file in the Academy office and are not published; however, this report includes all legal necessities such as constitution and bylaw revisions, election results, and financial statements. The rest of the report covers the essence of all Academy committee activity and Board action.

Benthic Diatom Distribution In The Cedar River Basin, Iowa, Stephen P. Main Jan 1977

Benthic Diatom Distribution In The Cedar River Basin, Iowa, Stephen P. Main

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Counting approximately 500 diatoms from each of 16 benthic diatom samples collected 11 October 1975 from the Cedar River and its tributaries, the Shell Rock and Little Cedar Rivers, in NE Iowa has yielded 118 taxa. These waters were alkaline (160-210 ppm HCO3; pH 8.4-9.5); turbidity was negligible in the Little Cedar and rose to 40 FTU in the Cedar. The 5 most abundant taxa and their distributions were: Stephanodiscus subtilis (Van Goor) A. Cleve, more than 40% of the 2 Shell Rock samples and rare in the 4 Little Cedar samples; Cyclotella men …

Practical Application Of Basic Research In Hydrogen Bonding, Paul E. Rider Jan 1977

Practical Application Of Basic Research In Hydrogen Bonding, Paul E. Rider

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

It has become common in recent years for non-scientists to react rather disdainfully toward research projects that ad dress what appear to them to be highly specialized areas of interest and which, from their titles, offer little good for mankind. Those of us who spend great portions of our waking hours engrossed in these studies tend to over-react in the other direction by holding our endeavors in an exaggerated esteem that tends to preclude an appropriate assessment of their essential merit. As is usually the case, the proper perspective lies somewhere in between.

"Fore" Physics, Rick Zehr Jan 1977

"Fore" Physics, Rick Zehr

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

I have developed an activity which I would like to share, in the hope that it might prove educational as well as enjoyable. In Chapter 1 of the Project Physics there is a brief history of photography, which in itself is quite interesting, but one picture specifically lends itself to additional study. The photograph of the golfer provides the basis for this activity. The students are asked to work in small groups to determine the speed of the ball.

Purebred?, Wilmer J. Miller Jan 1977

Purebred?, Wilmer J. Miller

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A notion of "purity" and connotations of cleanliness, neatness, stability, uniformity, worthiness and admirable values click through our mental processes. After all, that's what we learn in biology, especially the genetic section, don't we? Well, maybe it's colored a bit by the horticulturalists' and stock breeders' influence, and dog and cat fanciers who want pedigree papers and conformity to some arbitrary standard. Poultry and small pet fanciers have about the same attitude, but rely less on papers. But "purebred" is jargon--at worst meaningless in the context of conflicting usages, and contemptuous in use by a more sophisticated group--breeders or teachers …

Bioassay And Corn Coleoptiles, S. Lane Wilson Jan 1977

Bioassay And Corn Coleoptiles, S. Lane Wilson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In the 1930s, Dr. F. W. Went and R. Bonner conducted investigations into the factors regulating cell elongation in plants and their subsequent effect on plant growth. These studies eventually led to the isolation of a plant growth hormone called auxin. Auxin was finally identified chemically as indole-3-acetic acid or IAA.

More Snow Jobs, Paul Joslin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

On the first day of snow, when the attention of children is obviously distracted from normal classroom procedures, have them bundle up and go outside. Once outside, have the students follow you in a line and form a circular path. You can then use the circle formed in the snow, to teach or review concepts associated with motion, time, direction, fractions and geometry.

The Anti-Science Syndrome, Arthur Koestler

The average person will be reluctant to admit that a work of art is beyond his level of comprehension; but he will, in the same breath and with certain pride, confess his complete ignorance of the principles which make his radio work.
