A Notable Range Extension For The Plains Pocket Mouse Perognathus Flavescens Perniger Osgood, In Iowa, James L. Christiansen, Robert C. Sanz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The known range for the plains pocket mouse, Perognathus flavescens perniger Osgood has been extended 60 miles (96 km) southeast of the easternmost known locality for this arid grassland species. The discovery of this species in the relict sand dune habitat of Muscatine County, Iowa indicates that other eastern populations may be found in similar relict areas in southeastern Iowa and western Illinois.

The Use Of 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine Derivatives Of Ovarian Ketosteroids In Steroid Analysis, Asa C. Black Jr., G. Rodman Davenport, James R. West

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper reports the development of a technically simple analytical technique for the characterization and quantitative determination of ovarian ketosteroids employing derivative formation with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNP), separation by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and quantitative determination by spectrophotometry. The chemical identities of the derivatives were established by nitrogen analysis. The melting point, chromatographic mobilities of the free steroids and their derivatives on silica gel G in three systems, wavelength of maximum absorption in chloroform and ethanol, and molar absorption coefficient are reported for the 2,4-DNP derivatives of ovarian ketosteroids. The relationship between the absorption maximum in chloroform and the chemical structure of …

Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick Jan 1978

Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The problem of providing an adequate food supply to feed the world's hungry is and has been a major concern among many scientists, politicians and other leaders representing many sectors of American society. As a result of such concern, every conceivable avenue is now being explored to find new ways whereby new crops and foodstuffs can be raised or developed to meet the world's demand. In Geneva, Switzerland in 1975, some members of the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that "the continuing.increases in the world population without a comparable increase in the available amount of conventional foodstuffs must stimulate further …

Physiologic Studies On The Heart Of Amblema Peruviana (Mollusca, Bivalvia), Susan K. Hoiseth, Richard E. Mayerchak Jan 1978

Physiologic Studies On The Heart Of Amblema Peruviana (Mollusca, Bivalvia), Susan K. Hoiseth, Richard E. Mayerchak

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Physiologic Studies on the Heart of Amblema peruviana. The heart of the freshwater clam, Amblema peruviana was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in ionic concentrations, and could function in extremely dilute ionic environments. Pharmacologic studies showed a bimodal acetylcholine response, with inhibition at lower concentrations, and excitation at higher concentrations. CI- ion was found to potentiate the depressor acetylcholine response. The resting membrane potential was found to be more negative than that found in comparable marine species.

Bionomics Of The Flathead Chub, Hybopsis Gracilis (Richardson), H. Al Martyn, James C. Schmulbach Jan 1978

Bionomics Of The Flathead Chub, Hybopsis Gracilis (Richardson), H. Al Martyn, James C. Schmulbach

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Aspects of the life history of the flathead chub were investigated between 7/15/75 to 8/31/76 in Perry Creek, Iowa, a Missouri River tributary. Age and growth data from 288 fish revealed that the population consisted of 4 age groups. Total lengths based on summation of increments averaged 78, 110. 132 and 150 mm for age groups I through IV. The weight-length relationship for preserved fish was log W = -1.7615 + 2.9802 (log L). The coefficient of condition for all fish was KSL = 1.7 and KTL = 0.96. Sexual maturity was reached when the fish were 2 years old …

Paleopathology Of An Archaic Ossuary At The Lewis Central School Site In Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Alton K. Fisher

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This Late Archaic ossuary, approximately 2800 years old, was discovered near Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1975 during earth moving operations that partially destroyed it. The fragile skeletal remains of 25 individuals ranging from childhood to old age were recovered from the undisturbed portion. Slight to moderate arthritic changes were observed in 4 of the 18 adult skeletons and one example of spondylolysis was encountered. There was no unequivocal evidence of dental caries. Abrasion of the teeth was severe, starting soon after the teeth erupted, and progressing to serious dental complications in one-third of the adults over 20 years of age. …

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson Jan 1978

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reproductive biology of the American robin (Turdus migratorius Linnaeus) was studied on the Iowa State University campus during the spring and early summer of 1977. Although the robin breeding population was below that reported for similar habitats elsewhere, it was appreciably larger than during the late 1960's when a major reduction in number of breeding robins at Iowa State followed the use of DDT. Breeding robins, as indicated by number of nests, were more numerous in 1977 than in any year during the height of the Dutch elm disease control program, 1962-70. Basic reproduction parameters such as clutch size and …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science 1977-78, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The completion of the 100-year history of the Academy in the fall of 1974 led to the current practice of writing a running history on a year-to-year basis, in the form of the Annual Report. The Board of Directors decided in the fall of 197 5 to publish the Annual Report in the PROCEEDINGS. Recent committee reports and Board minutes, from which most of this report derives, are on file in the Academy office. Records older than 1975 are in the Special Collections section of the Iowa State University Library, constituting the official archives of the Academy.

The Effectiveness Of Two Methods Of Teaching Card Index Skills To Third Graders, Jo Bader Jan 1978

The Effectiveness Of Two Methods Of Teaching Card Index Skills To Third Graders, Jo Bader

Graduate Research Papers

This research study set out to determine if an audio-tutorial package or a slide-tape learning package was more effective in teaching card index skills. The researcher predicted no significant difference at the .05 level in the two groups. Literature was reviewed on audio-tutorial packages, characteristics of media, the projected image, and theories of learning. The two learning packages were designed, piloted, and revised. The population was thirty third grade students at Grant Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This population was randomly divided into two treatment groups. The students took similar pretests and post tests and completed the same follow-up …

Morphological And Cytological Relationships Between Stipa Robusta And Stipa Viridula (Gramineae: Stipeae), Margarita A. Mondrus Jan 1978

Morphological And Cytological Relationships Between Stipa Robusta And Stipa Viridula (Gramineae: Stipeae), Margarita A. Mondrus

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Stipa robusta (Vasey) Scribn. and Stipa viridula Trin. have previously been distinguished on the basis of overlapping quantitative characters, which often are inadequate for identification. Recent chromosome counts had not been made for either species. I have distinguished several effective diagnostic characters, including palea length, shape and pubescence, ratio of lemma length to width, ratio of palea length to lemma length, and panicle density. The most reliable character is palea length.

A Philosophical Approach To The History Of Microbiology, James Slock Jan 1978

A Philosophical Approach To The History Of Microbiology, James Slock

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In a previous article, science and how science operates was discussed from a philosophical point of view. In this article, the history of the Germ Theory of Disease (and hence a large part of the history of microbiology) is discussed from the philosophical perspective presented in the first article. The history presented in this article is not intended to be definitive but rather to view the history of the Germ Theory of Disease from a different perspective.

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar Jan 1978

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …
