Histology Of The Embryonic Chick Mandible Following X-Irradiation, Barbara Ann Bailey Walton Jan 1979

Histology Of The Embryonic Chick Mandible Following X-Irradiation, Barbara Ann Bailey Walton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The sensitive period for the induction by x-irradiation of reduced mandibles in chick embryos was determined to be during the 5th day of incubation. Variations in mandibular anomalies can be correlated with the incidence and frequency of cell deaths. As exhibited by control mandibles, cell deaths around the distal ends of Meckel' s cartilages through the 7th day may aid distal cartilage elongation. The variety of anomalies resulting from teratogenic doses is due, in part, to differences in sensitivity between embryos and their ability to recover from radiation damage. Bone development (initial ossification) in experimental embryos was retarded from 12 …

The Decapod Crustaceans Of Iowa, Gary S. Phillips Jan 1979

The Decapod Crustaceans Of Iowa, Gary S. Phillips

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Between 1 March 1977 and 30 September 1978, a survey was made of the species of decapod crustaceans present in Iowa. During this time period all of Iowa's 99 counties were surveyed. A total of 2390 specimens representing 500 lots were collected from 492 different sites in Iowa. Specimens were collected by seining, dip netting, hand collecting, excavation, and trapping. An additional 1944 specimens were examined from existing collections. Seven species of Cambaridae (Cambarus diogenes diogenes Girard, Orconectes immunis (Hagen), Orconectes iowaensis Fitzpatrick, Orconectes rusticus (Girard), Orconectes virilis (Hagen), Procambarus acutus acutus (Girard), and Procambarus gracilis (Hagen)) and one …

A Case Study For The Governor's Science Advisory Council: The Nitrite Controversy, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Governor's Science Advisory Council (GSAC) was established by executive order in April 1977 to provide objective scientific advice and information to the Governor or the state agencies. A major problem in science advising to government at all levels is the credibility of information sources. The controversy concerning a possible ban on the use of nitrite in the curing of meat products provided an opportunity for the GSAC to demonstrate its potential as an unbiased representative of the scientific community.

Chromosome Stability And Regenerative Potential Of Anther And Seedling Callus Of Arabidopsis Thaliana: Effect Of Age, Race And Induction Medium, Kenneth A. Feldman Jan 1979

Chromosome Stability And Regenerative Potential Of Anther And Seedling Callus Of Arabidopsis Thaliana: Effect Of Age, Race And Induction Medium, Kenneth A. Feldman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An investigation of the effects of factorial combinations of race, explant, induction medium and age on chromosomal stability and regenerative ability of Arabidopsis thaliana callus was performed. Regenerative ability of primary and subcultured callus from all treatments was also examined. Somatic counts were performed on a sample of calluses from factorial combinations of two explants (anther and seedling) and two races (WS and HM) induced on three induction media (DBM-1, ACM-1 and PG-1) and subcultured onto maintenance medium (DBM-2-M) after 30, 60 and 90 days. At each subculture, the mean chromosome number for each factorial treatment was close to the …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Salamandars, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken Jan 1978

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Salamandars, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Organizing A Rock And Mineral Club (Part I), Ron Bonstetter

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This is Part I of a collection of ideas designed to promote the formation of rock and mineral clubs. Such programs are appropriate for interested individuals from upper elementary grades through high school. A broad range of interests and skills are suggested to leave room for the creativity of prospective club advisors. Membership in clubs of this nature provides many opportunities for the development of interests, hobbies and careers. The desire to pursue rock and mineral studies is developed and encouraged by creating an informal setting where individuals can identify and fulfill their interests. A successful club allows its members …

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, is a general name applied to compounds consisting of two benzene rings joined together, with several to all of the remaining hydrogen atoms substituted with chlorine. Because of this, formulations of PCB's vary in the percentage of chlorine with the sample taken.
