Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips Jan 1978

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Decapods are a fascinating group of animals which inhabit most aquatic environments in Iowa. As they are secretive, their habits are not well known. However, they play an important role in Iowa's aquatic communities and are worthy of more attention by biology teachers and their students. Decapods are members of the class Crustacea, a group of arthropods with gills and heavy, crust-like exoskeletons. Crustaceans include such diverse forms as the microscopic water fleas and copepods, the larger sowbugs and amphipods and the more familiar decapods such as crayfish and river shrimp. All decapods have ten walking legs. In Iowa, decapods …

Entry Into Elementary Science Through Live Animals, Stanley L. Weinberg Jan 1978

Entry Into Elementary Science Through Live Animals, Stanley L. Weinberg

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Some years ago I did a series of animal behavior film loops for the Ealing Company. The film loops sold well. Their distribution has been taken over by a subsidiary of CBS and they still sell. The series has been a commercial success. But I judge it a pedagogical failure.

Iowa's Diatoms: Part I (Collection), James Hungerford Jan 1978

Iowa's Diatoms: Part I (Collection), James Hungerford

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The three dominant groups of algae found in Iowa are Chlorophyta (green algae), Cyanophyta (blue-green algae), and Chrysophyta (golden-brown algae). The golden-brown algae is composed of a variety of species called diatoms. This is the first in a series of articles on Iowa diatoms. Unlike most other plant species which have cell walls of cellulose, diatoms have siliceous cell walls constructed of two overlapping valves which fit together like the lids of Petri dishes. These walls are ornamented with fine ridges, lines and pores that are characteristic for each species. Although the contents of the cells decompose readily the cell …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Introduction, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Further Characteristics Of An Anomalous Temperature Response Of Hypocotyls In Some Soybean Cultivars, Cyrus Samimy, Clifford E. Lamotte Jan 1978

Further Characteristics Of An Anomalous Temperature Response Of Hypocotyls In Some Soybean Cultivars, Cyrus Samimy, Clifford E. Lamotte

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Some soybean cultivars exhibit a bimodal temperature response. Their hypocotyls elongate normally at 20 and 30 C but are inhibited at 25 C. The inhibition is inducible. It manifests itself, or continues to be manifest, after seedlings are transferred to 20 or 30 C. Sensitivity to 25 C is limited to early seedling development and disappears about 6 days after seeds are supplied with water.

Float, Sink, Think!, Timothy Cooney Jan 1978

Float, Sink, Think!, Timothy Cooney

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The following is a typical question asked at the end of physics units dealing with buoyancy: "A barge loaded with scrap iron is in a canal lock. The captain orders his crew to dump all of the scrap iron overboard. What happens to the water level in the lock?" I have asked this type of question to both high school and college physics students. Of course, answers are given which predict an increased, a decreased , or an unchanged water level.

The Vascular Flora Of Navigation Pool 8 Of The Upper Mississippi River, S. D. Swanson, S. H. Sohmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

As a result of comprehensive field work performed during 1975 and 1976 followed by herbarium activities, a complete picture of the composition of the vascular flora of Navigation Pool 8 of the Upper Mississippi River has been obtained. The area includes a 47.5 km (23.3 mile) section of the Mississippi River between Dresbach, Minnesota and Genoa, Wisconsin. A total of 482 species in 88 families were collected. The Gramineae was the largest family with 33 genera and 63 species, while Carex (Cyperaceae) was the largest genus with 26 species. The flora comprises communities here defined as alluvial forest, willow forest, …

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski Jan 1978

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Marsha L. Dutkowski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound 6-bromo-7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (1) was desired for use in a project directed toward the synthesis of two novel depsidones. Since 7-hydroxy-2,2,5-trimethylchroman-4-one (2) was readily available, a number of bromination conditions were investigated in an attempt to find a regiospecific synthesis of 1. However, mixtures of varying composition of 1, 2, 3 and 4 were obtained under all the conditions tried. Final separation of 1 and its isomer 3 was accomplished by a mixture of chromatographic techniques. Structural assignment of the two brominated products 1 and 3 was made by a combination of carbon and proton NMR.

Changing The Role Of The Media Specialist In Curriculum Planning At Decorah Senior High School, Richard J. Valley

Graduate Research Papers

This research project was conducted in the fall of 1977 at Decorah Senior High School, Decorah, Iowa, where the media specialist had an inactive role in curriculum planning and implementation. The media specialist recognized the need to change his role in curriculum planning to an active role, involved at the planning stage rather than reacting during implementation.

Temporal And Depth Stress Dynamics Of Lake Diatom Communities On Glass Substrates, Gregg A. Cunningham Jan 1978

Temporal And Depth Stress Dynamics Of Lake Diatom Communities On Glass Substrates, Gregg A. Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Diatom communities were studied that became attached to glass slides suspended at 1 m and 7 m depths in Lake West Okoboji, Iowa during an eight week period in the summer of 1974. Each community was analyzed at two week intervals for colonization, succession, and alternating depth stress manipulation (transfer) responses, Colonization communities were obtained from a series of slides exposed at each depth for each two week interval. Succession communities consisted of a slide series acquired from each depth with exposure times of from two to eight weeks, Diatom communities on a series of slides from each level were …

A Rationale For One-Year Teacher Internship, Arlie Daniel Jan 1978

A Rationale For One-Year Teacher Internship, Arlie Daniel

Iowa Journal of Communication

The idea of the one-year internship for teacher trainees has been widely discussed for at least a decade. For the most part, however, the actual implementation of such a program has never been brought to fruition. The lack of widespread acceptance and support for this approach to an old, nagging problem has been a disappointment, not only for the advocates of the idea, but also for many of the teacher trainees who have passed through one of the current attempts to educate an undergraduate student to become a proficient elementary or secondary teacher.

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson Jan 1978

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA) classification and seriation subtests previously administered to 359 white, primarily middle-class preschool and primary grade school children were analyzed to determine the degree of relationship, interaction and parallelism between these two cognitive skills across age groups of children. In addition, the existence of any sex differences in performance was examined. The 359 children were grouped into three successive age groups at six-month intervals beginning with the age of four years and six months.

Results indicated that the relationship between seriation and classification, as measured by the BELA, was positive and quite …

Attitudes Of Women Toward Menopause, Cheryl L. Freitag Jan 1978

Attitudes Of Women Toward Menopause, Cheryl L. Freitag

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study explored women's attitudes toward menopause in relationship to age, education, marital status, health status, history of hysterectomy, and level of income. The 254 female subjects were reached through different clubs and organizations. The main focus of the research was on a small Iowa city. Information on the six variables was obtained through a questionnaire. The Neugarten et al. (1963) Attitude-Toward Menopause checklist was utilized to determine the subjects' attitudes toward menopause. The checklist contained 34 statements to which the subjects indicated their level of agreement by using a Likert-type scale. Directions were given in group situations with the …
