Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman Jan 1979

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman

Graduate Research Papers

This research was a content analysis concerned with the stereotyping of animals in children's literature. Five hypotheses were formulated on the topic. These hypotheses examined the relationship between type of characterization (animal as animal, animal as animal but talking, animal as human being) and stereotyping. The relationship between role of character (major or minor) and stereotyping and the degree of stereotyping and realism, in general, prevalent in children's picture books. The animals picked for analysis were bears, foxes, mice and rabbits. The total population of books was taken from five sources and a stratified random sample was drawn. A total …

The Use Of Short-Count Methods On Field Collected Diatom Communities To Determine Water Quality Of Small Streams, James A. Slock Jan 1979

The Use Of Short-Count Methods On Field Collected Diatom Communities To Determine Water Quality Of Small Streams, James A. Slock

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was undertaken to determine if short-count methods for calculation of diatom species diversity could be used to determine the water quality of small streams. Two small streams, located in North Central Iowa, were selected for study; one was chosen because it appeared to be in a relatively healthy condition and the other because it appeared to be highly polluted. Diatom samples were collected by direct field collection of the predominant diatom growths in each stream. Short-counts of 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 diatom valves were made and species diversity computed by 2 methods, the Shannon Index of …

Utilization Of Wave Energy, Walter R. Schmitt Jan 1979

Utilization Of Wave Energy, Walter R. Schmitt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When looking upon an aroused sea, many wonder how this seemingly large energy resource could be used. Inventive minds have gone to work on devices of all kinds - pumps and bellows, buoys, barges, and ramps, surface and subsurface siting, using alloys and plastics, etc. -generally based on mechanical or hydraulic principles. They would probably all work (if somebody would build them), but none thus far have been shown to do so profitably.

Some National Trends In High School Science Education And Their Influence In Iowa, Jack Gerlovich Jan 1979

Some National Trends In High School Science Education And Their Influence In Iowa, Jack Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In August, 1978, a NEW sponsored National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report was issued entitled, Three Assessments of Science: Changes in Achievement 1969-77. The report indicated a 4.7 percent decrease in science achievement scores for 17 year-old high school students since 1969. During the same time period, 2.5 percent and 1.4 percent declines were reported for 13 and 9 year olds in science, respectively. Declines were observed to be greater in the physical than the biological sciences.

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart Jan 1979

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.

Biobank, A Computerized Data Storage And Processing System For The Vascular Flora Of Iowa, Lawrence J. Eilers Jan 1979

Biobank, A Computerized Data Storage And Processing System For The Vascular Flora Of Iowa, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

BIOBANK is an electronic data processing (EDP) system for storing and processing the accumulated data on the vascular flora of Iowa. This computerized system was designed as a tool to facilitate floristic research by systematists who may have had little or no training in computer operation. Thus, a minimum of coding is used; the usual kinds of information are entered into the system and the printouts are in traditional formats. The programs, which together form the BIOBANK system, are written in the PL/1 programming language. The data processed by the system can be: 1) of varying lengths; 2) stored in …

Attitudes Of Elementary Principals And Kindergarten Teachers Toward Mandatory Kindergarten And Optional Pre-Kindergarten Programs In Iowa, Janice E. Woods

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis research provided background for the Iowa Association of Elementary Principals on the current status of early childhood education in the fifty states. It also determined the support for mandatory kindergarten and optional pre-kindergarten programs among elementary principals and kindergarten teachers in Iowa. This data was sought to provide information for the Iowa Association of Elementary School Principals for possible legislation requiring mandatory kindergarten and optional prekindergarten programs in Iowa.

One aspect of the study involved compilation of data reported by the department of public instruction in the fifty states. A second aspect concerned a survey of elementary principals …

Nematode-Destroying Fungi Of Johnson County, Iowa, Dennis J. Kitz, Robert W. Embree

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The nematode-destroying fungi in woodland areas of Johnson County, Iowa were surveyed. Twenty-six species of predacious fungi were identified, including 5 species newly reported for Iowa: Arthrobotrys superba Corda, Cephalosporium balanoides Drech., Dactylella asthenopaga Drech., Harposporium bysmatosporum Drech., and H. subuliforme Drech. A fungus similar to Nematoctonus pachysporus Drech., but lacking clamp connections, is discussed.

Preferences And Practices In High School Chemistry In Iowa, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1979

Preferences And Practices In High School Chemistry In Iowa, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A simple questionnaire was sent to Iowa's 474 teachers of high school chemistry in 1978 to determine textbook preference, degree of acceptance of self-paced instruction, popularity of the modular approach, and amount of time spent in the laboratory. The responses combined with information provided by the Department of Public Instruction revealed that the traditional approach to teaching chemistry appears to predominate in Iowa and that one particular textbook is the preference of a third of the teachers.
