Project "Geology Is" arose out of a desire to fill an apparent gap in science education at the secondary level. It was noted that, over the years, the traditional secondary science sequence of biology, chemistry, and physics has several very weak aspects.

A Checklist Of The Vascular Flora Of Allamakee County, Iowa, James H. Peck, Dean M. Roosa, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Based upon field and herbarium study, the vascular flora of Allamakee County is composed of 1040 taxa (species plus hybrids), including 46 endangered and 23 threatened Iowa species. This number represents approximately 50% of the species in the state flora and is the greatest number of taxa documented for a single Iowa county. The large and diverse flora reflects the diversity of topography and habitat types within the county. The study resulted in the addition of four taxa to the state flora (Conopholis americana, Dryopteris X triploidea, Equisetum X litorale, and Polygonum douglasii) and in the location of populations of …

The Vascular Flora Of Starr's Cave State Preserve, Thomas G. Lammers

Starr's Cave State Preserve is a 140 acre tract of wooded bottomlands and limestone bluffs along Flint Creek in Des Moines County, southeastern Iowa. The vascular flora of the preserve was inventoried in 1975-79. This flora consists of 339 species in 79 families. Several rare species of southern and Ozarkian distribution occur here, including four species whose status in Iowa is threatened: blue ash (Fraxinus quadrangulata), winged monkey-flower (Mimulus alatus), winter grape (Vitis cinerea), and pagoda mint (Blephila ciliata). The Decapod Crustaceans Of Iowa, Gary S. Phillips

From March 1977 to September 1978, a survey was conducted to determine the species of decapod crustaceans present in Iowa and their distribution. During this time period, all of lowa's 99 counties were surveyed. A total of 2390 specimens representing 500 lots were collected from 492 different sites. An additional 1944 specimens were examined from existing collections. Seven species of Cambaridae (Cambarus diogenes diogenes Girard, Orconectes immunis (Hagen), Orconectes iowaensis Fitzpatrick, Orconectes rusticus (Girard), Orconectes virilis (Hagen), Procambarus acutus acutus (Girard), and Procambarus gracilis (Bundy)), and a single species of Palaemonidae (Palaemonetes kadiakensis (Rathbun)), were identified. Notes On The Mammals And Reptiles Inhabiting A Pinyon-Juniper Woodland In Western Nevada, Jeffrey B. Llewellyn

During a 33-month field study of Peromyscus maniculatus (Deer Mouse) and Peromyscus truei (Pinyon mouse), 8 species of small mammals were captured and 6 species of reptiles and 10 additional species of mammals were also recorded. Data is presented for habitat selection and relative density of the small mammals, and for the status (common, uncommon, rare) of the reptiles and additional mammals.

Dr. Theodore Louis (Ted) Jahn, Professor-Emeritus of Biology at the University of California at Los Angeles, died 1 May, 1979 following a cerebral hemorrhage. A longtime member of the Iowa Academy of Science, he was among the first to receive its Award of Merit.

Distributed Parameter Watershed Sedimentation Model, Patricia M. Witinok, Gene Whelan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The model developed herein uses a detailed geometric description of the watershed and incorporates the kinematic wave approximation of the equations of motion, superposition, and time-lag methods to analyze flood and sediment flows. The watershed is broken down along tributary divides into subcatchments, which are divided along lines of steepest slope into "streamtubes." These streamtubes are further divided according to slope into "segments," such that topographic parameters of each segment are spatially constant over the segment. The flow from the streamtube enters the channel at the mid-point of the stream tube bordering the channel. This point is called a "node." …

Tomocerus (Plutomurus) grahami n.sp. is described from Terrero Cave, Terrero, Santa Fe Co., New Mexico. It is the fourth species of the subgenus recorded from North America.

Taxonomy And Geographical Distribution Of Onagraceae In Iowa, Robert Lee Allbaugh

Twenty-two species of Onagraceae in 6 genera occur in Iowa. Habitat data, flowering times, frequency, and geographical distributions were determined from field observations and herbaria records. Taxonomic keys and descriptions of the twenty-two species are also included. Although most species were clearly differentiated, two areas of taxonomic confusion existed in the family. Morphological differences were found to exist between three species commonly confused in previous flora studies: Oenothera biennis L. ssp. centralis Munz; O. strigosa {Rydb.) Mack. & Bush ssp. canovirens (Steele) Munz; and O. parviflora L. O. parviflora is reliably separated from the other two species by its subterminal …

Francis Galton (1869) was the first to suggest the scaling of human general intelligence, distinguishing fourteen grades ranging from the most illustrious and eminent to imbeciles and idiots. He sought to show that such intelligence was mainly hereditarily determined, although he was awe.re that most brilliant individuals were reared in intellectually stimulating environments. Charles Spearman, an officer in the British Army and a man of great military tradi tion, likewise became interested in the nature of intelligence. Comparatively late in life he became a professor at the University of London, where he built a world-famous psychological research center. Spearman asked …

In recent years there has been a good deal of interest in Piaget's cognitive developmental theory as it relates to beginning reading and learning to read and a number of research studies have investigated the effect of cognitive stage on reading ability. Little research has been done, however, which investigate the relationships and effect of advanced levels of cognitive development upon the reading ability of adolescents and adults. This thesis explores and probes the reliability and the inconsistencies of Nigeria's 1963 census using the scanty information available through the microfilm on Nigeria's 1963 census. It uses the 25 provinces and some times, the four regions of Nigeria as the unit level of resolutions. This is the first attempt to discuss the age-sex structure of the whole country. The 1963 data set is subjected to series of testing to see if there is any valid relationship between the 1963 Nigeria demographic variables and those found in other advanced nations for which reliable information has been obtained by some population …

In the development of wood identification skills, certain factors are important. These include: mastery of both terminology and technique, repetitive practice experiences, and an individualized approach in both guidance and feedback to the learner. The use of the computer as a programmed instructional aid provides for an individualized approach to learning, simulated teacher-student interaction, and feedback and reinforcement to stimulate learning. The problem of this activity is to develop a computer assisted instructional program to enable the learning of techniques for identifying selected samples of hardwoods.
