The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee Jan 1980

The Iowa Tests Of Basic Skills: Indicators Of Science Achievement, Darrel Hoff, Charles Hohensee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In most public schools in Iowa, the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) are administered to grades three through eight. These tests provide a wealth of information concerning achievement in basic academic skills, but they do not provide a direct assessment of achievement of scientific skills. As a result, junior high teachers often have little data for assessing the scientific abilities of their students unless they administer additional tests. Science achievement, per se, is not usually measured in Iowa's public schools until the ninth grade, when students are given the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED).

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold Jan 1980

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

Anyone who makes assertions about the nature and significance of human communication will wittingly or unwittingly make commitments to fundamental assumptions about what it is to be a human being. If we do not pay attention to what these assumptions and commitments are, we are apt to wander into fantasy or self-contradiction or both. Dr. Hugh Blair, the Scottish man of letters, is a handy example. In the eighteenth century Blair promulgated the already popular theory that "taste" is a primary feature of all discourse. Whatever is said will reflect good, poor, or indifferent "taste." "Good taste" is the product …

Productivity Of Canada Geese In Northwestern Iowa, Thomas A. Nigus, James J. Dinsmore Jan 1980

Productivity Of Canada Geese In Northwestern Iowa, Thomas A. Nigus, James J. Dinsmore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Productivity, gosling habitat use, and survival of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) in northwestern Iowa were studied in 1977 and 1978. Arrival of geese on the breeding grounds in March coincided with the first open water in smaller wetlands. Initial laying dates (25 March 1977 and 26 March 1978) were probably influenced by photoperiod, timing of arrival at the breeding grounds, and ice conditions. The density of successful nests in 1978 averaged.12 nests/ha of wetland. Nest density was highest in cover class 2 wetlands. The large mean clutch size of 6.0 eggs for 185 nests suggested that most of …

Factors Related To Black Students Not Selecting Science As A Major, Denise Darcell Duncan Jan 1980

Factors Related To Black Students Not Selecting Science As A Major, Denise Darcell Duncan

Graduate Research Papers

Science is a field of study in which the proportion of blacks is drastically lower than that of the entire population (Humphries, 1976). Various studies have been conducted to investigate the characteristics associated with persons in the sciences (Flakes, 1973). There have also been recent studies of blacks in the sciences and the characteristics associated with them (Tilford, 1974). However, this research has not yet revealed why black students do not major in the fields of physical and biological science.

Resistance To Pythium Debaryanum In Zea Mays Seedlings, D. C. Foley Jan 1980

Resistance To Pythium Debaryanum In Zea Mays Seedlings, D. C. Foley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seedling resistance to Pythium was studied by placing maize kernels on or under a culture of Pythium growing on a semi synthetic medium. The main criteria were living plumules and roots after 14-days incubation at 12 C and 6 days at 23-27 C. Greater mortality occurred when inoculum was above the kernels than below. Surface-sterilization of kernels before exposure to Pythium increased seedling mortality, but moisture content of kernels at the start of exposure had only a slight effect on survival at 12 C. Maximum mortality occurred when the cold period was more than 8 days. Survival was greater after …

Need For Greater Concern For Nutrition In Science Programs, Robert E. Yager Jan 1980

Need For Greater Concern For Nutrition In Science Programs, Robert E. Yager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Effective teaching of basic nutrition is a major deficiency in the schools of our nation. Although nutrition is one of approximately a dozen central themes generally recognized as comprising biology, it is an area which tended to be de-emphasized during the 1960's and early 70's. Nutrition was usually too applied in nature to be a major focus within the NSF curricula which were organized around the conceptual themes which characterize and unify the various disciplines of science. One of the first changes in the development of the so-called "new courses" of the 1960's was the elimination of any applications of …

Teaching Creation And Evolution In Iowa Schools, Jack Gerlovich Jan 1980

Teaching Creation And Evolution In Iowa Schools, Jack Gerlovich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In February, 1977 a bill (H.F. 154) was introduced in the Iowa House of Representatives that read as follows: "If a public school district offers courses which teach pupils about the origin of humankind and which include scientific theories relating to origin, instruction shall include consideration of the creation theory as supported by modern sciences."' In May 1977 the Urbandale School District made a written appeal to the Iowa Department of Public Instruction to consult with experts in the science community to determine if the evidence used to support the creationist theory was credible and should be made available to …
