Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury Jan 1981

Interpersonal Aggression: Assertion Of Significant Reality Hypothesis, Dwight Alan Drury

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Interpersonal aggression is analyzed with the use of the symbolic interactionist perspective in this thesis. The literature generally lacks such an analysis. Symbolic interactionism views individuals as active definers and constructors of a reality. Individuals gain a sense of reality and the means by which to define it through the process of being socialized into various groups. That part of reality which is most important to the individual is termed "significant reality." A major part of an individual's "significant reality" is his or her self-concept. When an individual deems his or her "significant reality" is threatened, he or she may …

Intelligence, Intelligence Tests, And Developmental Characteristics Of Three To Six Year Olds: A Review And Critique, Margreta Ellen Hartje Jan 1981

Intelligence, Intelligence Tests, And Developmental Characteristics Of Three To Six Year Olds: A Review And Critique, Margreta Ellen Hartje

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research had a dual purpose. First it reviewed literature relevant to issues surrounding the construct of intelligence, developmental characteristics of the preschool child, and the measurement of the quantitative and qualitative aspects of preschool development. The review attempted to bridge the gap between the development of and the measurement of intelligence. The second function of the study was to provide a limited review and critique of commercial and non-commercial preschool measurement devices. The tests were categorized as intelligence/cognitive, language, motor, social/adaptive, or tests constructed on the basis of specific developmental theories. Criteria for inclusion centered around the test's usage …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Bilalian Children's Error Pattern On The Ppvt-R, Carole Redfield Coffey Jan 1981

A Qualitative Analysis Of Bilalian Children's Error Pattern On The Ppvt-R, Carole Redfield Coffey

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to analyze the errors made by four year old Bilalian (Black) children to the stimuli which comprise the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - Revised (PPVT-R) in order to generate possible explanations for the.children's preferred ("incorrect") responses in terms of language patterns and reasoning processes. Standardized administration procedures were disregarded; testing with each of the 21 children began with Plate 10 and proceeded until six "misses" occurred within eight consecutive responses. Each error, along with the test publishers' stipulated ("correct") response and a distractor, was queried in an attempt to ascertain the reason for the …

A Survey Of Science Instruction In Elementary Learning Disability Resource Rooms In Iowa Area Education Agency # 1, Kevin M. Anderson Jan 1981

A Survey Of Science Instruction In Elementary Learning Disability Resource Rooms In Iowa Area Education Agency # 1, Kevin M. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the initiation of special resource rooms for learning disabled youngsters several years ago, many special educators have concentrated their instructional routine on the skills of reading and mathematics. A subject area such as science has been viewed as a topic suited more for the regular classroom than the resource room. When science has been moved into the resource room, research shows it has generally been on a tutorial basis, helping the child catch up to other students. This study investigated the amount and quality of science instruction present in elementary learning disability resource rooms. It involved the 53 public …

Evaluation Of Affective Behaviors Of High School Science Students, Gary E. Downs Jan 1980

Evaluation Of Affective Behaviors Of High School Science Students, Gary E. Downs

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

American education has been in a constant state of change during the last half-century. Some of the changes in science education are being questioned by the critics. Some of the criticism has come about because of the emphasis on subject matter content and very little emphasis, if any at all, on values. Science education must be part of the movement to a more humanistic education for young people. One method that teachers can use to help determine the direction of science education is to try and teach for and measure the affective behavior of their students. This paper is a …

Outdoor Education At Knoxville, Curt Froyen Jan 1980

Outdoor Education At Knoxville, Curt Froyen

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many of the outdoor science activities at Knoxville wouldn't be possible if it weren't for the unusual arrangement of science classes. Students in the environmental science class, which meets during the fall semester, and the field biology class, which meets in the spring, attend class twice a week for two hours straight and once on Friday for one hour. All students are required to either take one of the field classes or general chemistry, as well as a semester in human biology.

The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe Jan 1980

The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The common though highly elusive North American badger is seldom seen and often misunderstood. When badgers are encountered by man, the experience is frequently startling to both parties. Impressions based on such limited and stress-filled information are biased. For example, it is widely believed that this member of the family Mustelidae (which also includes skunks, otters and weasels) is vicious, mean and aggressive. However, personal experience with badgers gained from studies over the past 10 years indicates that, although quite capable of defending themselves, badgers are shy, secretive and good bluffers.

Water Hyacinth And Overfishing Problems On An Indonesian Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1980

Water Hyacinth And Overfishing Problems On An Indonesian Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Water hyacinths, Eichhornia crassipes, and floating grass islands have been a serious problem for more than 50 years on Rawa Pening, a 2500-ha lake in central Java. Fish harvest increased with control of the plants in 1932-42 and 1951-56 but decreased as plants again increased in abundance. Control measures since 1962 have maintained open water but have not eliminated the problem. Hydrilla verticillata becomes abundant as the surface is cleared of water hyacinths. Hydrilla shelters Macrobrachium shrimp and other aquatic organisms, important to fish, and also is harvested for pig food. Annual fish yield dropped from about 530 kg/ha in …

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr. Jan 1980

Educational Handicaps In Chemistry Students, Charles Douglass Jr.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Research has been carried out to determine which characteristics and abilities are the best predictors of success in a college level chemistry course. Much of the work has centered on achievement measures such as high school chemistry performance, SAT or ACT scores, and the like. Factors other than demonstrated aptitude and ability are also important to success. Some research has looked at the effect of cognitive styles and motivational factors in attempting to predict success. Recent studies in our department indicate that most students who do not perform well may be thought of as suffering from an educational handicap, where …

Istj, Religion And Politics: An Editor's View, A. C. Haman Jan 1980

Istj, Religion And Politics: An Editor's View, A. C. Haman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the past year, the Iowa Science Teachers Journal has been criticized (and in one instance politically threatened) for not publishing sectarian interpretations of natural phenomena which conflict with widely accepted scientific theory. It is a policy of the journal not to publish sectarian or political views concerning natural phenomena. The purpose of this editorial is to provide clarification of the journal's role in reporting advances in science and science teaching to the public and parochial schools of the state.
