Self-Pacing, Individualized Instruction: An Overview, James L. Kelly, Richard Strub Jan 1981

Self-Pacing, Individualized Instruction: An Overview, James L. Kelly, Richard Strub

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the last fifty years, education has been in a flux due to continuous technological changes and greater interaction on the societal scene. As a result, developmental education practices have been the subject of controversy. Schools have been called upon to maintain their conservative, traditional role, yet, they are expected to continue with innovative ideas which will provide a quality education for all students regardless of their academic or socio-economic level. The stability of education at the local, state and national level is dependent on the maintenance of long-established customs; whereas, the progress of an industrial society demands constant experimentation …

A Laboratory Excercise In Gas Chromatography For High School Students, Bernard Hermanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Gas chromatography is a sophisticated tool for the isolation, identification and quantification of chemical compounds. The purpose of this exercise is to introduce the principles of gas chromatography to first year chemistry students. For the exercise, students inject their own chemical samples, estimate the purity of these samples by counting the number of peaks on a print out, measure retention times for the materials observed, and compare the "r" values to those of known substances.

Perspectives On Iowa's Declining Flora And Fauna - A Symposium, Donald R. Farrar Jan 1981

Perspectives On Iowa's Declining Flora And Fauna - A Symposium, Donald R. Farrar

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although Iowa is rich in past and present activity of eminent biologists and natural historians, a comprehensive inventory of the state's biological resources has never been assembled. With ever increasing demands on the land and an obvious decline and loss of many habitats and species, the need for such an inventory is urgent. The biological uniqueness or rarity of a particular habitat cannot be fully evaluated without state-wide data for that habitat and the species in it.

Quick Crystals, Sil Crespo Jan 1981

Quick Crystals, Sil Crespo

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When teaching about minerals, there is no way that you can omit the topic of crystals. Usually, we either go to our mineral cases and take out examples of crystals to pass around, or we grow our own. The only problem with these methods is that both take time. With the former, we are looking at crystals "after the fact." With the latter, we lost the interest of some students because it takes too long to grow crystals from a solution.

A Checklist Of The Vascular Flora Of Lee County, Iowa, James H. Peck, Thomas G. Lammers, Burton W. Haglan, Dean M. Roosa, Lawrence J. Eilers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vascular flora of Lee County, Iowa, based upon field and herbarium study, is composed of 876 taxa (species plus hybrids), including 25 endangered and 5 threatened Iowa species. Naturalized species totaled 154. The study added 318 species to the county flora, a 57% increase to the flora of what had been called one of lowa's "best collected counties." Two species are reported as additions to the state flora: Habenaria lacera (Michx.) Lodd. and Vitis baileyana Munson. The flora is most notable for the presence of many species which do not occur much farther northward in Iowa, being plants with …

Iowa Prairie - An Endangered Ecosystem, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1981

Iowa Prairie - An Endangered Ecosystem, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Prior to Euro-American settlement 85% of Iowa was occupied by prairie. Today less than 0.02% of pre-settlement prairie remains; a few small remnants are scattered across the original 30 million acres. Settlement of Iowa was rapid; most of the prairie was converted to cropland by the end of the 19th century. Since prairie preservation activities were initiated in the 1930's, a number of prairie remnants have been preserved by public and private agencies. Iowa needs to be surveyed and inventoried so that the significant remaining prairie remnants can be located and preserved. Recent prairie preservation efforts have been supplemented with …

Iowa Natural Heritage Preservation: History, Present Status, And Future Challenges, Dean M. Roosa Jan 1981

Iowa Natural Heritage Preservation: History, Present Status, And Future Challenges, Dean M. Roosa

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa was blessed with an abundant and diverse natural heritage. The history of problems of preservation of natural areas to depict the types and diversity of original Iowa are presented in an historical framework. The history is divided into 3 eras: an era of settlement (1832-1900), an era of academic concern (1900-1950), and a contemporary era (1950-present). The contemporary era is subdivided into 3 periods: an organizational period (l 950-1965), a period of inactivity (l965-1975), and a period of renewed activity (l 975-present). Two general themes are apparent: (a) numerous plans have been formulated but never adequately implemented, and (b) …

The Frustular Morphology And Distribution Of Cyclotella Gamma Sov. (Bacillariophyceae), Rex. L. Lowe Jan 1981

The Frustular Morphology And Distribution Of Cyclotella Gamma Sov. (Bacillariophyceae), Rex. L. Lowe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Diatom collections from several lentic aquatic habitats in northern lower Michigan were found to contain a large benthic centric diatom. Comparison with type material revealed this diatom to be Cyclotella gamma Sov. Specimens ranged in size from 20 to 35 μm and had striae densities of 5 to 8 in 10 μm. Valves are granular externally and possess central and marginal strutted processes internally; as well as a single, well-developed labiate process. The striae are alveolate in nature. Cyclotella gamma is probably more common than records indicate which may in part be attributable to its confusion with C. meneghiniana Kiltz.

Testa Topography In Leguminosae, Subfamily Papilionoideae, Nels R. Lersten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seeds of 340 species of 150 genera from 30 of the 32 tribes of Papilionideae were examined by SEM. Nine categories of testa patterns were established: levigate (smooth), rugulate (irregularly roughened), substriate (short parallel ridges), simple reticulate (meshwork of ridges enclosing single cells), multi-reticulate (primary plus secondary ridges), simple-foveolate (single cell ends isolated by grooves), multifoveolate (unit of several cells surrounded by grooves), lophate (short ridges with irregular sides), and papillose (single protruding epidermal cells). Patterns in about 85% of species are most conspicuous near the hilum, becoming attenuated or disappearing toward midseed. Vicieae, Trifolieae, and Cicereae, however, typically retain …

A Post-Hoc Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities, Roger Joseph Piwowarski Jan 1981

A Post-Hoc Analysis Of Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities, Roger Joseph Piwowarski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study assessed the efficacy of specific classes of variables (Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Extrapersonal) for the explanation of the preponderance of males in learning disabilities placements (LO). Factors were selected which represented a cross-section of variable classes and included behavioral, genetic, and physiological factors. A large number of variables were included to facilitate a relationship between the present study and the many mutually exclusive theories of LO. A significant purpose of the present study was to examine the applicability of specific theories of LO to an actual population. An examination was made of the case histories of a complete population …

America watches the crisis in Atlanta with concern, fear and for many, rage. The intensity of concern did not develop unitl [sic] half way through the second year. Although thousands of dollars have been poured into solving these murders, the police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and special task forces have not at this writing been able to solve these crimes. Police have, however, arrested Wayne Williams for the murder of Nathaniel Kater, the twenty-eight victim. With all efforts and …

A Study Of Industrial Arts Teachers' Opinions Of Gifted And Talented Students In Black Hawk County, Iowa, James Robert Wrona Jan 1981

A Study Of Industrial Arts Teachers' Opinions Of Gifted And Talented Students In Black Hawk County, Iowa, James Robert Wrona

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

While the handicapped and disadvantaged have enjoyed the benefit of some unique industrial arts educational programming, relatively little has been done to provide for the special educational needs of gifted and talented students. This may be partially a result of little research completed associating the gifted and talented student with industrial arts. Additionally, legislative support for gifted and talented students has been lacking. It was not until 1978, with the passage of Public Law 95-561, that programs for gifted and talented students have been granted some funding on the federal level. Although this public law can authorize up to $35 …

Evaluating The Effect Of A Guided Fantasy Visualization On The Figural And Verbal Originality Of Upper Elementary Students, David B. Windahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study investigated a method for stimulating several aspects of short-term creative thinking. It was hypothesized that the figural and verbal originality scores of students receiving a guided fantasy visualization (GFV) would be significantly different from those scores of students not receiving a GFV. Fifty-six children from the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades of Price Laboratory School, Cedar Falls, Iowa, were pre-tested on one figural and one verbal subtest from the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT). After scoring the subtest on the originality scale only, students were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Following a four week interval, …
