The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe
The Natural Forest Communities Of Iowa: A Resource In Trouble, Gary Hightshoe
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Based on the original United States Land Office survey, it has been estimated that 18 percent of the total state land area was once covered by forest. Today, less than 4 percent of the Iowa landscape remains in forest. In essence, Iowa's forest lands have a value underrated and misunderstood by most of its citizens. Threatened with exhaustion of our natural forest heritage, it is imperative that the citizens of this state awaken at last to the necessity of protecting what is left. The appreciation, conservation, restoration and wise management of our remaining forest resource must play a critical role …
Creationism And Evolution
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
There are several views regarding origins and changes that have occurred on the earth over time. Six day creation, gap creation, progressive creation, theistic evolution, creationism, evolution, and planetary seeding are terms used to describe some of these views. The contrasts among these ideas, especially between creationism and evolution, have been discussed publicly.

Family Crisis Intervention With An Adolescent At Risk Of Suicide: A Study Of The Family Crisis Intervention Unit Of Polk County, Iowa, Michael Perry Bleadorn
Graduate Research Papers
Suicide: the act of killing one's self intentionally. The word reaches out and grabs every one of us who reads or hears it. It is a word which is at the very heart of our innermost fears. Suicide is an action which has been romantically praised in western culture by William Shakespeare in "Romeo and Juliet." It has been glorified in the eastern culture through the ritual of Hari-kiri and also in the kamakazi mission of death. "Suicide, which once ranked twenty-second on the list of causes of death in the United States, now rates tenth, and in some states …

Iowa's Mammal Fauna: An Era Of Decline, John B. Bowles
Iowa's Mammal Fauna: An Era Of Decline, John B. Bowles
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Of the 70 species of mammals reported from Iowa since European settlement, 39 (55%) are extirpated, rare, or declining. Twenty-nine (42%) are not appreciably declining and 2 (3%) are increasing in number and distribution. Continued pressure to clear and row-crop as much land as possible is placing an increasing stress on the mammals of Iowa.

The Effect Of Chemical And Physical Regimes On Primary Production Off The U.S. East Coast, Susan A. Huntsman
The Effect Of Chemical And Physical Regimes On Primary Production Off The U.S. East Coast, Susan A. Huntsman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Despite higher concentrations of nutrients and chlorophyll a, available data indicate that, over an annual cycle, primary production in the Mid-Atlantic Bight is little if any higher than that in shelf waters south of Cape Hatteras. Principal factors regulating productivity in the northern region appear to be the long period of low temperatures and reduced insolation and deep mixing during the winter and dominance of slow growing dinoflagellates during the late summer. Periods of very high production occur during the spring and fall. In contrast, the productivity to the south seems to show little seasonal fluctuation. Warm temperatures and adequate …
Iowa's Waters And Fishes: A Century And A Half Of Change, Bruce W. Menzel
Iowa's Waters And Fishes: A Century And A Half Of Change, Bruce W. Menzel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Settlers in Iowa found a rich and diverse fisheries resource in its creeks, rivers, and lakes. However, for nearly a century, degradation of the aquatic environments and their fishes occurred as a result of agricultural and urban development. Since the 1930's management efforts have improved the interior sport fishery resources but many nongame species have been extirpated or are imperiled in the state. Various forms of pollution and habitat alteration remain as threats to the well-being of stream and lake fishes in Iowa. The Mississippi and Missouri rivers bordering Iowa have been drastically changed by navigation improvements and other influences. …
Iowa's Avifauna: Changes In The Past And Prospects For The Future, James J. Dinsmore
Iowa's Avifauna: Changes In The Past And Prospects For The Future, James J. Dinsmore
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Since the time of settlement, at least 17 species (9%) of birds have disappeared as nesters in Iowa. Nine species were lost before 1900, another two before 1950, and six since 1950. Five species have been successfully introduced into Iowa, and four of these now are abundant in the state. A number of other species have benefited from human development and have increased in numbers since settlement. An additional 29 species have populations that seem endangered or threatened and may disappear before the end of this century.

Characteristics Of Discipline And Non-Discipline Freshmen Living In The Residence Halls At The University Of Northern Iowa Enrolled In Fall Semester 1980, Gary Robert Carlson

All through our society, people have to live and work together harmoniously or chaos is the result. Whenever a large number of different types of individuals live within close proximity of one another, problems are bound to appear. This phenomena occurs not only in the "real world" but in the college/university setting as well, particularly in the residence halls.

Response To Reciprocal Full-Sib And Mass Selection In Corn (Zea Mays L.), M. M. Lantin, A. R. Hallauer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Responses to mass selection for number of ears per plant and reciprocal full-sib selection for grain yield in 2 synthetic varieties of corn (Zea mays L.) were determined. Ten cycles of mass selection were effective for increasing number of ears per plant, but no correlated response for grain yield improvement was realized. Reciprocal full-sib selection was effective in increasing grain yield of the 2 parental varieties and their cross and in increasing number of ears per plant. No evidence was obtained that indicated genetic variability decreased in the parent varieties after 4 cycles of reciprocal full-sib selection or after 5 …

Helping And Understanding The White-Collar, Middle Aged Male In The Industrial Setting, Trina E. Eitland
Helping And Understanding The White-Collar, Middle Aged Male In The Industrial Setting, Trina E. Eitland
Graduate Research Papers
In today's industry, motivation is a primary factor in performance (Glueck, 1977). Motivation. not only comes into play with the extrinsic factors of the working conditions but also deals with the intrinsic factors of the individual in question. What happens when this person reaches his mid-forties? Industry is now realizing the humanistic side of working and has noticed an attitudinal change in their employees at this time of life. Production reports show the physical changes (i.e., production quotas go down) but what causes these changes? How does it affect industry and how can industry help their employees at middle age?
Population Trends Among Iowa's Amphibians And Reptiles, James L. Christainsen
Population Trends Among Iowa's Amphibians And Reptiles, James L. Christainsen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Sampling conducted from 1970 to 1980 indicates that ranges of about 69% of the species and subspecies of amphibians and reptiles found in the state are receeding. Of Iowa's 76 forms, 15% are considered in danger of extinction in the state, 22% threatened with ultimate extinction if corrective action is not taken, and 32% are declining. Only 8% have shown improvement in recent years and the remaining 22% appears relatively stable. Further studies are needed to precisely determine the status of each form and outline protective strategies.

Introduction - Special Issue In Honor Of Professor John. D. Dodd On The Occasion Of His Retirement, E. F. Stoermer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This issue of the Proceedings is dedicated to Professor John D. Dodd on the occasion of his 65th birthday. During his long and distinguished career at Iowa State University, Professor Dodd has exemplified the very best qualities of teaching and academic research in the botanical sciences. He finds genuine and unfailing fascination in his chosen field and one senses that his fondest desire is to elevate all of his students to his own perspective so that they might share the same rewards he finds in discovery of facts and comprehension of principles. Although few can match his intellectual capacity and …

Diatoms Associated With Bryophyte Communities Growing At Extreme Depths In Lake Michigan, Eugene F. Stoermer
Diatoms Associated With Bryophyte Communities Growing At Extreme Depths In Lake Michigan, Eugene F. Stoermer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Diatom assemblages on limestone cobbles collected from 42.7 m depth in the mid-lake high region of Lake Michigan are characterized by low total abundance and low diversity. The flora present contains three associations. A large allochthonous component, comprised of planktonic species and very low numbers of benthic species usually found in shallow water is present. A limited number of dominant taxa appear to be particularly associated with deep habitats in oligotrophic lakes. Other species, usually reported from terrestrial habitats, appear to be associated with the bryophyte Fissidens fontanis which is present in the collections.

Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) From Sheeder Prairie, Guthrie County, Lowa, Judith H. Loescher
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Seventy-four diatom species, varieties, and forms representing 15 genera were found in collections from Sheeder Prairie. The most widely distributed taxa were Navicula mutica Kutz., Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehr.) Grun., and Pinnularia borealis Ehr. Three taxa which had not previously been reported from Iowa are Navicula charlatii f. simplex Hust., Navicula contenta var. parallela Petersen, and Navicula dismutica Hust. Marked differences in the floras from upland and lowland collections were observed. The greatest diversity of species was found at the two sites where standing water occurred occasionally. Fifty-six taxa were found in collections from one of these sites; 31 taxa were …
