A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig Jan 1983

A Study Of The Relationship Between Intelligence And Creativity, Jill L. Weig

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present research study was twofold. The first purpose was to determine the relationship between creativity and intelligence when intelligence was assessed by a group test (CAT-V) and an individual test (WISC-Rt V). The second purpose was to examine the threshold hypothesis, which states that below a critical IQ level, usually 120, the two constructs appear to be positively and moderately related. Above this level, the correlation between the two constructs lessens. Theoretical and statistical foundations regarding the relationship between the two constructs were addressed. The theoretical model addressed divergent/convergent thinking properties. Creativity was considered a, divergent …

The New Particles In High-Energy Physics: What Do They Mean?, Gerald W. Intemann Jan 1983

The New Particles In High-Energy Physics: What Do They Mean?, Gerald W. Intemann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since the earliest of times man has searched for an underlying unity to the rich diversity observed in nature. That search has taken him from the world of atoms and molecules to the domain of sub-nuclear particles and quarks as powerful accelerators have enabled physicists to probe smaller and smaller distances with higher and higher energies. The last six years have been especially significant in high-energy physics. During this brief period there have been unexpected discoveries of matter described by such whimsical names as ''charm'' and ''beauty.'' These recent developments are reviewed for the purpose of explaining the role which …

Energy Efficiency Ratios Of Surface Mining Systems For A Small Iowa Coal Mine, T. S. Colvin, S. J. Marley, C. E. Anderson Jan 1983

Energy Efficiency Ratios Of Surface Mining Systems For A Small Iowa Coal Mine, T. S. Colvin, S. J. Marley, C. E. Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The normal criterion used to determine if a mining venture should be started or continued is its financial profitability. Energy efficiency is another criterion for dealing with public energy decisions. The energy efficiency ratios (output/input) of a large bulldozer, a scraper ripper, a small dragline, and a large dragline system were calculated for the Iowa Coal Project Demonstration Mine #1 (ICPDM #1) located between Oskaloosa and Bussey, Iowa. Even though the large dragline had the lowest cost and highest energy efficiency, it would not be used on this site without having other nearby sites available to allow long-term use.

Effect Of Symptomless Fungal Infection Of Maize Seed On Germination In The Presence And Absence Of Pythium Debaryanum., D. C. Foley Jan 1983

Effect Of Symptomless Fungal Infection Of Maize Seed On Germination In The Presence And Absence Of Pythium Debaryanum., D. C. Foley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Seeds from ears of Zea mays infected by Gibberella zeae and Nigrospora oryzae frequently failed to show these fungi when germination took place in the absence of Pythium debaryanum. Diplodia zeae emerged from symptomless, infected seeds in both the presence and absence of P. debaryanum. Symptomless infection by Fusarium moniliforme evidently did not reduce germination in the absence of Pythium. The effect of F. moniliforme in the presence Pythium could not be tested because of inadequate controls. Symptomless infection by D. zeae, G. zeae, and N. oryzae always reduced the ability of seedlings to resist Pythium.

Inheritance Of Resistance To The First And Second Broods Of The European Corn Borer In Corn, M. Sadehdel-Moghaddam, P. J. Loesch Jr., A. R. Hallauer, W. D. Guthrie Jan 1983

Inheritance Of Resistance To The First And Second Broods Of The European Corn Borer In Corn, M. Sadehdel-Moghaddam, P. J. Loesch Jr., A. R. Hallauer, W. D. Guthrie

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The European corn borer is one of the most destructive insect pests of corn. Our objective was to determine the inheritance of host resistance in corn to the first and second broods of the European corn borer with Design III and S1 progeny analyses. All estimates of additive and dominance genetic variances were significantly different from zero except for the dominance variance for second-brood cavity counts. Additive genetic variance, however, was the major component of the total genotypic variance in the F2 population for all traits. Average level of dominance was in the partial range for the date …

Influence Of Simulated Harvest On Iowa Wild Turkey Populations, Willie J. Suchy, William R. Clark, Terry W. Little Jan 1983

Influence Of Simulated Harvest On Iowa Wild Turkey Populations, Willie J. Suchy, William R. Clark, Terry W. Little

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Computer models were used to simulate autumn harvest of a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopava silvestrus) population in Iowa. Parameters were based on estimates of survival rates, fecundity rates, and age and sex ratios from field studies in mixed forest-farmland from 1977 to 1981. Simulations with average survival and fecundity parameters resulted in a population growth rate of 4% per year. If female survival rates were reduced 4.8% or fecundity was reduced 13.9%, the population became stationary. Interaction of hunting and non-hunting mortality was incorporated according to 3 hypotheses: additive, completely compensatory, and compensatory mortality rates up to a threshold. Estimated …

Movement Of Yellow Perch Between East And West Okoboji Lakes, Iowa, Dennis N. Schmitt, Wayne A. Hubert Jan 1983

Movement Of Yellow Perch Between East And West Okoboji Lakes, Iowa, Dennis N. Schmitt, Wayne A. Hubert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Movement of yellow perch (Perea flavescens) from Lake East Okoboji into Lake West Okoboji was confirmed. Recapture trends suggested general movements into Lake West Okoboji in autumn and return into Lake East Okoboji before spawning in spring. Thermal gradients occurring due to seasonal differences in direction of interlake flows and differential warming and cooling rates of the two lakes, appeared to be major ecological factors that governed these interlake movements.

Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities: A Follow-Up Study, Julie Carol Olson Jan 1983

Factors Contributing To The Preponderance Of Males In Learning Disabilities: A Follow-Up Study, Julie Carol Olson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study was designed to assess the utility of specific variables for differentiating LO males and LO females and LO students from RE students. Variables were selected based on previous research findings indicating their utility for differentiating the relevant samples and the availability of pertinent data in existing files. Data regarding the 21 pre-selected variables were obtained for all LO students (50 males and 30 females) and a control group of RE students matched with them by sex, grade, and age. Discriminant Analysis procedures were used to determine the intercorrelated grouping of variables which best differentiated sex within LO …

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz Jan 1983

Model For Kindergarten Orientation, Lillian Mae Frantz

Graduate Research Papers

There is a variation in the way children adjust to school as they enter with different levels of maturation. A basic factor in understanding the nature of children is the recognition that every child.is unique. Children are born with genetic variations that predispose them to be different in appearance, temperament, growth patterns and learning style. All of these factors are interrelated and interdependent and function as a unit to produce unique personalities. In terms of promoting competence, individuality dictates a tolerance and understanding of learning differences, a variety of approaches to teaching and learning in the classroom or at home, …

A Plan For Improving The Curriculum And Instruction For The Lower Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Pusaporn Phongboon Jan 1983

A Plan For Improving The Curriculum And Instruction For The Lower Secondary Schools Of Thailand, Pusaporn Phongboon

Graduate Research Papers

"Prior to the 20th century, education was for royalty or for monks" (The Office of Prime Minister, 1978:263). Thailand had no formal school system. Education generally was undertaken as a family task. "The first formal schools were opened only about one hundred years ago" (Bennett, 1975 :26). However, as society became more complex, special institutions were developed to promote desired educational activities. Such developments have been gradual, and in large measure in reference to national interests.

A Natural Areas Inventory Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Mary Frances Duritsa

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Black Hawk County is a 576 square mile political subdivision located in the northeast quadrant of Iowa in the physiographic region known as the Iowan Surface. The purpose of this study was to determine the status of natural areas within the county. Four aspects were investigated: (i) the amount and qualitative condition of the woodland (ii) the identification, verification and qualitative assessment of specific natural communities with emphasis on prairies, wetlands and forests; (iii) the identification and verification of threatened and endangered species as reported in Endangered Io;.va Vertebrates (Roosa, 1977) and Endangered and Threatened Iowa Vascular Plants (Roosa and …

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis Jan 1983

The Experience Of Migration And Selected Perceptions Of Older Residents Of The Waterloo Black Community, Jacqueline Elizabeth Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis deals with the experience of migration during the formative years of the Black community of Waterloo, Iowa and perceptions of the quality of life from 1910-1970. This exploratory study is based on survey data and folk/oral history derived fr001 a selected sample of men and women, age 50-90 years, of the Black community of Waterloo. The early history of American Blacks has been grossly neglected by historians and others and, as a result, sources of documented information are limited. Because of this, it is important that existing information be preserved. It is this author's hope that survey data …

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney Jan 1983

A Comparative Study Of Selected Behaviors Of Children From Divorced/Separated And Intact Families In The Parochial School System, Elaine Delaney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to determine if there is a significant difference in selected behaviors of children from divorced/separated families in the parochial school system as compared with children of intact families within the same school system. The relationship was examined by taking into consideration the child's self evaluation of his/her home, school, and peer relationships and teacher's evaluation of school related behavior. Four parochial elementary schools with relatively equal economic status were selected from the metropolitan area of a large mid-western city. Subjects included four hundred eighty-three fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students and their respective homeroom teachers. Sixty-three …

Bovine Adrenocortical Microsomal Hemeproteins P-45017 Alpha And P-450c-21. Isolation, Partial Characterization, And Comparison To P-450scc., J. Bumpus, K. M. Dus Nov 1982

Bovine Adrenocortical Microsomal Hemeproteins P-45017 Alpha And P-450c-21. Isolation, Partial Characterization, And Comparison To P-450scc., J. Bumpus, K. M. Dus

Faculty Publications

A scheme is presented for the simultaneous isolation of P-45017n, and P-450c-21 from bovine adrenocortical microsomes and for their purification to specific contents of 19-20 nmol of P-450/mg of protein. Although cholate solubilized only 75% of the total amount of P- 450 and 36% of the NADPH-cytochrome C (P-450) reductase present in bovine adrenocortical microsomes as compared to Triton N-101, it produced a less complex mixture of microsomal proteins from which most of the P-450 could be removed by a 0-25% cut with polyethylene glycol. The P-450 fraction was subsequently resolved into individual P-450s by column chromatography on w-aminooctyl-Sepharose; these …

The Fundamentalist Movement And Its Effect On The Educational System, Gail Lowe Brown Jan 1982

The Fundamentalist Movement And Its Effect On The Educational System, Gail Lowe Brown

Graduate Research Papers

The most rapidly growing segment of American elementary and secondary education is that of private Protestant fundamentalist schools. Between 1965 and 1972 the number of students enrolled in such schools increased from 615,548 to 1,433,000, or 123.4% according to an estimate by the Bureau of the Census. 1 During the past two decades while educators have been learning to deal with the handicapped, bilingual education, busing, affirmative action, in sum, while educators were involved with self and the rush of developments in education and in society, large groups of parents and taxpayers were becoming increasingly disillusioned with their schools. They …
