In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix Jan 1983

In Search Of Intimacy, Mark A. Dix

Graduate Research Papers

The traditional means to attain intimacy through dictated marriage were historically fulfilled by society and parents who betrothed their children. Societal and parental dictated norms usurped the individual's freedom and required living up to externally mandated expectations of behavior. Today's system of intimacy departs dramatically from the traditional model. Today's model is formed by the individual who freely meets his/her own needs regardless of age or historically based, societal or cultural standards of expected conduct. Today's mode of living gives an individual the freedom to pursue, court and marry based solely upon his/her own needs, expectations and love.

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1982-83, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1983

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1982-83, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year 1983 marks the 108th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1875. The first 100 years was reviewed in a special centennial issue of the Proceedings in March, 1975 in an article by this writer. Since that time, a running history of the organization has been published as the "Annual Report." This is then the eighth annual chapter in the history of the Academy since the centennial, and it is the last report of Academy affairs to be written by this author. Whether this format and practice will continue in future years depends on the choice of …

Freshwater Drum Spawning And Fecundity In The Upper Mississippi River, Timothy J. Goeman Jan 1983

Freshwater Drum Spawning And Fecundity In The Upper Mississippi River, Timothy J. Goeman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One hundred freshwater drum ovaries from 1981 collections were examined to provide spawning and fecundity information for the long-term fisheries monitoring program at the Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station. Objectives were to estimate freshwater drum fecundity in the Upper Mississippi River and relate sexual maturity to size or age. The mean fecundity estimate for ripe fish was 85,800 ova per female. Total estimated number of ova showed no relationship with length or weight, but there was a relationship with age. Mean number of ova for a given age group increased with age. Female freshwater drum in Pool 14 may become …

An Inquiry Into The Activity And Traditional Methods Of Teaching Science And Their Effects Upon Sixth Grade Students' Content Learning, Critical Thinking Ability, And Attitude Toward Science, Jane Mcandrews Jan 1983

An Inquiry Into The Activity And Traditional Methods Of Teaching Science And Their Effects Upon Sixth Grade Students' Content Learning, Critical Thinking Ability, And Attitude Toward Science, Jane Mcandrews

Graduate Research Papers

The identification of factors which increase science achievement and interest among students is a topic of renewed consideration among researchers. Today educators and societal leaders are deeply concerned that the schools are not producing future scientists, engineers, and a citizenry at large who will be able to deal capably and creatively with a high-technology, post-industrial era in American society. Concomitant with this new technological age are the increasingly critical dilemmas of energy production and use, environmental degradation, world food shortage, and the threat of nuclear annihilation. These problems seem to make the need for a scientifically literate public as well …

Additions To The Pteridophyte Flora Of Iowa - Ii, James H. Peck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two hybrid wood ferns (Dryopteris X bootii {Tuckerm.} Underw. and Dryopteris X uliginosa {A. Br.} Deuce) are reported as new to Iowa. An additional 118 county records for 30 species and hybrids are summarized. Observations on possibly extirpated Iowa pteridophytes and on the status of extant populations of the rarest Iowa pteridophytes are reported, including the rediscovery of lsoetes melanopoda, not observed in Iowa since its original discovery in 1863. The Iowa pteridophyte flora, the subject of a decade of field and herbarium study, consists of 57 species and 7 hybrids, supported with 1450 county collections.

Phloem Of Primitive Angiosperms. Ii. P-Protein In Selected Species Of The Ranalean Complex, Joanne M. Friis, Roland R. Dute

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey of the phloem-protein (P-protein) in species of "primitive" angiosperms was undertaken to provide possible evidence for P-protein function from a phylogenetic point of view. The ontogeny and substructure of P-protein in Liriodendron tulipifera and Magnolia soulangeana are similar to that of more advanced dicot species. In the light of this information the time of P-protein evolution seems to coincide with the development of the angiosperms themselves.

Habitat Selection By Small Mammals On The Shoreline Of A Flood Control Lake In South-Central Iowa, Paul D. Heideman, John B. Bowles, Keith R. Erickson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An unusually high water level on a flood control lake shore in Iowa altered the species composition, relative density and spatial relationships of most small mammals. Peromyscus maniculatus disappeared from the study site during flooding but was the earliest invader after water had receded. A few Reithrodontomys megalotis also returned. Sorex cincereus and Blarina brevicauda did not immediately reinhabit recently flooded areas. Miccrotus ochrogaster disappeared from the site. Peromyscus leucopus and M. pennsylvanicus persisted on the unaffected portion during flooding. Both P. maniculatus and P. leucopus reestablished spatial relationships similar …

The Search For Excellence In Science Education, John E. Penick Jan 1983

The Search For Excellence In Science Education, John E. Penick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In 1976 several NSF funded studies revealed the current state of science education in the United States. In 1978, a synthesis of the more than 2,000 pages of information from those three NSF reports and the NAEP data was begun by twenty-three science educators throughout the U.S. The synthesis researchers worked independently in small teams, each focusing on one aspect of science education: elementary science, biology, physical science, science/technology/society, or inquiry. A critical part of the synthesis analysis was developing a description of an ideal or desired state for a focus area and then comparing the actual to the desired …

A Look At Earth Science Teacher Needs, Peter A. Rubba

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In preparation for designing a number of inservice activities for science teachers, the author completed a needs assessment on a random, stratified sample of the grade six through twelve science teachers in Illinois. The survey was carried out using the Moore Assessment Profile (MAP), an instrument which had been developed specifically to identify the needs of inservice science teachers.

The Identification Of Unknown Bacteria, Steve Ziser Jan 1983

The Identification Of Unknown Bacteria, Steve Ziser

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A major activity of most college level introductory microbiology courses is the identification of one or more unknown bacterial species. The ways suggested in many lab manuals for identifying bacteria are often unorganized and difficult to follow. In addition, the huge volume of information often required to make a diagnosis may overwhelm beginning microbiology students who are largely incapable of weighing the importance of many of the tests in trying to decide how to best proceed with the identification. Microbiology manuals too often overlook the fact that identification is an orderly process of moving from general characteristics to more specific …

Element-Ary Puns, Rita K. Voltmer, Jody M. Hines, James L. Kelly

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The periodic table offers a lot of information, most of which is usually not used by high school students. However, it is important for students of chemistry, biology and physics to have some background related to the elements that make up the periodic table. Several students were working with a periodic table and realized they could make studying the elements more enjoyable by making up some statements that led to the actual naming of the element. For example: If you want to catch wild horses, europium.
