Men In Midlife: A Literature Review, Gary Wayne Cox
Men In Midlife: A Literature Review, Gary Wayne Cox
Graduate Research Papers
According to Newton (1983), midlife "is a time for appraisal and review, a time to assess possibilities for change, and create new choices that will form the basis for a good-enough life in middle adulthood (p. 448). Levinson (1978) describes midlife transition as being a bridge between early adulthood and middle adulthood, when men come to terms with their past and prepare for the future. He feels that everyone goes through transition periods in their lives at various life stages. For some, midlife is a time for crisis. Brim (1976) noted that this crisis is both rapid and substantial, resulting …

Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The University of Iowa is offering three Secondary Student Training Programs (SSTP) in the summer of 1986. The goals of these programs are to supplement the high school curriculum, stimulate student interaction with scientists and educators, facilitate career planning and decision making, provide a smooth transition from high school to college, provide opportunities for enrichment and acceleration in science, and allow students to take an active role in science.

My July mail contained a letter which began with a phrase heard and read all so often these days, "I'm writing to let you know that I will be moving to Texas . . ." It is with special regret that I received this message from Steve Ziser who was serving as our assistant editor for biology. We have appreciated Steve's contributions to ISTJ and regret his leaving, but do wish Steve and his wife well in their new academic adventures in Austin.

End-Stage Renal Disease (Esrd) And The Prospects For A Machine Free Life, Robert W. Hanson
End-Stage Renal Disease (Esrd) And The Prospects For A Machine Free Life, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is the term used by nephrologists describe cases of renal failure that have progressed to the point where continued viability depends on a substitution for kidney function. A generation ago ESRD was a terminal condition because there was no substitute for kidney function. Survival time depended on factors such as age -the presence of complicating diseases such as diabetes. Today, dialysis technologies are available that promise many additional years for ESRD patients. Kidney transplants have become fairly common but are preceded by some form of dialysis or followed by some form of dialysis in the event …

The Relationship Between High School Curriculum And Collegiate Academic Success, Nancy Bramhall
Graduate Research Papers
Newspapers and magazines have bombarded the American public in recent years with reports that national test scores on the American College Test (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) were steadily dropping. Many people believe this drop in scores meant the quality of education was declining. Are the educational standards of our high schools lower today than they were twenty years ago? If so, what are the ramifications for our colleges and universities? The Advisory Panel on the SAT Score Decline stated, "There is a clearly observable evidence of diminished seriousness of purpose and attention to mastery of skills and …

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This year, 1985, marks the 110th anniversary of the founding of the Iowa Academy of Science. In 1975, when the Academy celebrated its centennial, a history of the Academy was written. Since that time the Annual Report has served as a running history of the Academy. This year's report encompasses the year beginning July 1, 1984 to June 30, 1985, and is based on committee reports, Board minutes and the recollections of the author.
Pteridophytes Of Iowa's Loess Hills - Adaptations To Dry Habitats, Donald R. Farrar
Pteridophytes Of Iowa's Loess Hills - Adaptations To Dry Habitats, Donald R. Farrar
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Eleven species of pteridophytes and one hybrid occur in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. Adiantum pedatum L., Athyrium filix-femina (L.) Roth, Camptosorus rhizophyllus (L.) Link, Cystopteris tenuis (Michx.) Desv., Cystopteris protrusa (Weath.) Blasdell, and Matteuccia struthiopteris (L.) Todaro are widely distributed in Iowa, but restricted in this area to the most mesic woodlands, probably due to the drought sensitivity of their shallow rhizomes and above-ground gametophytes. Equisetum hyemale L. and E. arvense L. are common in riparian habitats and moist roadside ditches. These two species likely survive by maintaining contact with a permanent water table. Equisetum laevigatum A. Braun, …

Science Notes - New Course In Natural History At Iowa Lakeside Laboratory
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the summer of 1986, a course in natural history, developed and first taught at the 1985 summer session, will be offered at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory. The course focuses upon the major habitat types in Iowa: prairies, woodlands and wetlands. The objective of the course is to familiarize students with important species, community structure and function, and sampling techniques in each habitat. An experimental component asks students to carry out a research project. The course is taught by Dr. Paul Christiansen, Cornell College, and Dr. Richard Lampe, Buena Vista College, with help from Jean Prior from the Iowa Geological Survey.

A Comparison Of Selection Procedures For Transition Room Placements, Joyce Warren
Graduate Research Papers
This study seeks to identify and compare procedures that can be used to distinguish between students who are, and those who are not, ready and mature enough to enter a regular first grade. Kindergarten teachers' recommendations and individual children's test scores will be collected and analyzed. A follow-up first grade evaluation based upon teacher recommendations, test scores, and individual evaluations will be used to check earlier predictions.
A Review Of The Effects Of Maternal Alcoholism On Children: Implications For Child Mental Health, Pamela Sue Maxwell
A Review Of The Effects Of Maternal Alcoholism On Children: Implications For Child Mental Health, Pamela Sue Maxwell
Graduate Research Papers
Children of alcoholics are a neglected population whose needs are not clearly apparent nor understood (Kern et al., 1981). In our society there are nearly thirty-six million family members of alcoholic persons (Kellennann, 1974) of which approximately twenty eight million are children of alcoholics (Deckman & Downs, 1982). Furthermore, there are an estimated seven million children under the age of twenty in the United States who are living with an alcoholic parent (Woodside, 1983). Yet, resources to meet the needs of these children are lacking (Hindman, 1975; Kellennann, 1974).
