Survey Of Some Eastern Iowa Caves For Wintering Bats, Rudy Pruszko, John B. Bowles

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Nineteen caves in the eastern Iowa counties of Dubuque, Jackson, and Jones were surveyed for bat usage during the winter of 1983-84. A total of 1548 hibernating bats of 4 species (Myotis lucifugus, Myotis keenii, Pipistrellus subflavus, and Eptesicus fuscus) were counted in 12 of the caves. Only the previously reported federally endangered Myotis sodalis was not found.

Behavioral Considerations In The Live Capture Of Guanacos With Spring-Activated Foot Snares, Robert T. Jefferson Jr., William L. Franklin Jan 1986

Behavioral Considerations In The Live Capture Of Guanacos With Spring-Activated Foot Snares, Robert T. Jefferson Jr., William L. Franklin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Due to the potential repugnancy and laws preventing the use of kill-snares for large mammals, live-snaring is rarely used by field biologists for capturing ungulates. In a study of the socioecology of the South American guanaco (Lama guanicoe), spring-activated snares were tested and proved to be a successful technique for safely capturing juvenile animals because of a knowledge of individual and social behavior, especially the predictable daily use of such social attractants as preferred foraging sites and dust baths. Live capture with foot snares has potential application to other ungulates if behavioral considerations are taken into account.

A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson Jan 1986

A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

As theorists and instructors of written composition come to understand writing as more than a product of putting thoughts on slate, paper, or screen, oral revision techniques such as student-teacher conferences and peer editing groups are increasingly being used during the process of composing. Recent reports indicate use of these and other speaking activities in the writing classroom, as pre-writing procedures and as revision techniques, for example. Yet, the call continues for more research in both the teaching of written composition and in speaking/writing relationships. This research was designed to determine the effects of using three different oral revision techniques--peer …

Gifted Females: An Underachieving Minority, Barbara Ann Buescher Jan 1986

Gifted Females: An Underachieving Minority, Barbara Ann Buescher

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to examine the needs and achievements of gifted girls. Girls are being identified at the elementary level, yet there is a continuous noticeable decline in academic achievement through their academic career. Of special interest are the subject areas of mathematics and science, since these are where the greatest decrease occurs. Through a review of literature the following questions will be answered: 1. What causes the gifted female to manifest diminished achievement in mathematics and science? 2. Who has the most influence on the attitudes of gifted females? 3. What can be done to help …

Trends In The Competencies Desired By The Corporate Sector In Training Roles, William Cashman Jan 1986

Trends In The Competencies Desired By The Corporate Sector In Training Roles, William Cashman

Graduate Research Papers

In Megatrends, Naisbitt (1983) declared that America has become a nation of clerks. Once, 70% of the job force was involved in manufacturing; now that same percentage is working in the information processing field. Over the years the national economy has progressed from an agricultural base to an industrial base, and recently from an industrial base to an information base. High technology not only continues to reshape many traditional work functions, it profoundly impacts how America trains and develops its work force.

Gifted Females And Underachievement In Mathematics And Science Careers, Rebecca A. Hanlon Jan 1986

Gifted Females And Underachievement In Mathematics And Science Careers, Rebecca A. Hanlon

Graduate Research Papers

A review of the literature showed that gifted females are underrepresented in the fields of mathematics and science. One major reason for few women in traditionally male careers is lack of participation in advanced mathematics and science courses. Internal causes of a lack of participation are ability, values, confidence, motivation, personality, and perceptions. External causes are stereotypes and parental support. Career choice is affected by tradition, marriage, and family. Attempts have been made to change attitudes and career aspirations, but more needs to be done in the areas of education, counseling, careers, and research.

High School Chemistry In Iowa: Current Status, Recent Trends, And Future Prospects, R. W. Hanson Jan 1986

High School Chemistry In Iowa: Current Status, Recent Trends, And Future Prospects, R. W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey of Iowa's 485 high school chemistry teachers and information from the Department of Public Instruction provide the basis for a description of the "typical" Iowa chemistry teacher in terms of age, experience, academic background, salaries, and teaching practices. Trends in student attitudes and modification of teaching practice during the 1981-84 period when the "crisis" in science education in the United States was being emphasized in the media were assessed from responses from 365 teachers. Results indicate that Iowa's chemistry teachers are conservative in making innovations in teaching practice, and the goal of increasing student exposure to chemistry is …

A Selected Cross-Cultural Study Of Piaget's Stage Theory Of Cognitive Development, Jie-Qi Chen Jan 1986

A Selected Cross-Cultural Study Of Piaget's Stage Theory Of Cognitive Development, Jie-Qi Chen

Graduate Research Papers

The large number of research studies which have been published on the cross-cultural implications of Piaget's cognitive development theory are extremely varied. This study attempts to classify them into three areas: sequence of cognitive development, rate of cognitive development, and the influential factors of cognitive development, in order to verify the universality of Piaget's theory and put forward some suggestions about educational practice. The review and analysis of related literature indicates that first, the universality of the sequence of cognitive development only deals with sensorimotor and pre-operation stages rather than concrete and formal operational stages. Second, the age of acquisition …

The Relationship Between Paternal Characteristics And Sons' Achievement In Reading, M. Christine Bruder Jan 1986

The Relationship Between Paternal Characteristics And Sons' Achievement In Reading, M. Christine Bruder

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was an exploration of paternal variables which may be related to sons' achievement in reading. Of a total possible population of 123 father-son dyads, 47 participated. The sons were fourth and fifth graders in a Catholic school system in a small midwestern metropolitan area. The instruments used were the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), the Child-Rearing Practices Report (CRPR) and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) "Reading Comprehension" and "Vocabulary" subtests. There was no significant relationship between paternal gender role identity and child-rearing practices, nor was there any relationship between paternal gender-role identity and sons' achievement in reading. …

The Consequence Of Inequity In Computer Education And Access And Blacks In The 21st Century, Mary I. Jaycox

Graduate Research Papers

In today's world of rapidly advancing computer technology, computer literacy is fast becoming an educational necessity for the future. As this advance is being made, by the majority of our society, it is becoming apparent that the problem of inequity in computer access and education may be closing the door to computer literacy on the minority populations of our society.

Possible Reasons For The Growth Of Peace Studies In The 1980s, Joan Marie Phelan Haack Jan 1986

Possible Reasons For The Growth Of Peace Studies In The 1980s, Joan Marie Phelan Haack

Graduate Research Papers

Peace movements in many different forms and degrees have been present throughout history. But advocacy of peace studies in educational institutions is quite a recent phenomenon. While a few groups have advocated peace studies since the 1950s, a preponderance of curricular materials and literature did not appear until the 1980s (Scott, 1984).

The Dance Of The School Psychologist, Steven John Iverson Jan 1986

The Dance Of The School Psychologist, Steven John Iverson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This is a historical/philosophical critique thesis. Its content and organization differ substantially from the typical research-oriented thesis in school psychology. This paper explores several primary themes in the ongoing development of school psychology as a profession and the issue of the philosophical base for measurement processes used by school psychologists. Chapter 1 reviews societal trends and actions which have facilitated the profession's development, and major role definitions that have come from within the profession. The chapter culminates in a review of surveys which studied the percentage of time spent on various functions performed by school psychologists. Assessment-related activities (testing, report …

The study also examined the relationship between beginning school age and retention in grade. The subjects for this study were 227 students who were enrolled in the kindergarten class of the Cedar Falls Community School District during the 1981-82 school year. This group of children was divided into four age groups according to the Iowa cut-off dates for school entrance. The overage group consisted of 44 children who were more …

The Effect Of An Aerobic Physical Fitness Program On Self-Motivation Of College Students, Susan Lynn Anderson Jan 1986

The Effect Of An Aerobic Physical Fitness Program On Self-Motivation Of College Students, Susan Lynn Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an aerobic physical fitness program on self-motivation of college students. It was hypothesized that participation in an aerobic physical fitness program would result in an increase in self-motivation of college students. One hundred five college students enrolled in activity classes at the University of Northern Iowa were selected for participation in the study. An exercise information questionnaire was used to select the subjects. Fifty-two subjects who participated in aerobic activity classes were specified as the experimental group. Fifty-three subjects enrolled in non-aerobic activity classes served as the control group. …

An Experimental Cost Index Model For The Analysis Of Service Cost Differentials Of Iowa School Districts, Dean W. Meier Jan 1986

An Experimental Cost Index Model For The Analysis Of Service Cost Differentials Of Iowa School Districts, Dean W. Meier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to construct a service cost index (SCI) for a sample of Iowa school districts and to use the SCI to examine the relationship school district size has to efficiency of educational services delivery. The SCI was based upon the computation of the cost of delivering a fixed market basket of services to a typical student in each of 44 randomly selected Iowa high schools. The Minimum Curriculum Requirements and Standards for Approved Schools, as outlined in the Code of Iowa, comprised the market basket of services. Instruction, administration, support, and transportation cost components comprised …

Bulimia: A Preliminary Analysis Of Moods, Self-Efficacy, And Binge-Eating, Kristen Jean Henke Jan 1986

Bulimia: A Preliminary Analysis Of Moods, Self-Efficacy, And Binge-Eating, Kristen Jean Henke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has yielded numerous diagnostic techniques for bulimia. The presence of binge-eating is necessary for the diagnosis of bulimia. There is little research that has studied the amounts and types of foods that constitute a binge-eating episode. In addition, depression and anxiety have been found in subjects with bulimia, and low self-efficacy has been noted in subjects trying to change smoking or eating habits. Also, previous research has not studied completely the above mentioned factors in bulimic sub-groups and normal control groups. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the bulimic, borderline bulimic and normal control subjects on …

Academic Migration Patterns Of University Of Northern Iowa Students Who Received Bachelor's Degrees Fall Semester 1984 And Spring Semester 1985, Gerald D. Bisbey

History of Education Book Gallery

The University of Northern Iowa, since 1876, has evolved from a single purpose teacher education institution to a more comprehensive institution offering a variety of majors in liberal and vocational arts in addition to maintaining and expanding the teacher education programs. With the change in mission came large increases in enrollment particularly in the liberal and vocational arts areas. In recent years the number of undergraduate students majoring in liberal and vocational arts has been about twice as large as the number majoring in teacher education. The change in mission and size of the University brought a need for information …
