The Attitudes Toward Computers Of The Selected Upper-Elementary/Middle School Students, Lih-Jiun Tsuei

Graduate Research Papers

The use of computer technology as a learning tool is becoming increasingly important in education (Russell, 1982). The Office of Technology Assessment (1982) predicts that by 1994 over four million microcomputers will be found in schools. The National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics has listed computer literacy as one of the ten basic skill areas in mathematics instruction (1978). The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in its Agenda for Action, has recommended that ''a computer literacy course, familiarizing the student with the role and impact of the computer, should be a part of the education of every student (1980, …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of orally ingested sodium bicarbonate on performance time and the accumulation of blood lactic acid in trained middle distance runners during short-term, high intensity treadmill running.

Nine, male, varsity track athletes, from the University of Northern Iowa performed two runs to exhaustion on a motor-driven treadmill at 15 mph. Sodium bicarbonate (NaHC03), or a placebo calcium carbonate (Caco3 ), amounting to .3 grams per kilogram of body weight was orally ingested 135 minutes prior to exercise. Venous blood was collected immediately before exercise, two minutes after exercise, and three minutes …

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert Jan 1987

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Temperature may be a major factor limiting distribution and abundance of species in the wild. It may be the main influence determining the seasonal abundances of two native species, Drosophila robusta and D. tripunctata, both of which have been collected from a lowland forest . Survival studies indicate that D. tripunctata does not survive as well at high temperatures (27 and 30°c) as does D. robusta (Seager, unpublished data). This suggests that the responses of these two species when placed in a temperature and humidity gradient may be responsible for the difference i n seasonal abundances noted by Jennings et …

Changes In The Protein Composition Of The Female Inflorescence Of Zea Mays L. During Early Development, Catherine Thompson Howard Jan 1987

Changes In The Protein Composition Of The Female Inflorescence Of Zea Mays L. During Early Development, Catherine Thompson Howard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many features of plant development illustrate the plasticity of plant systems. Committment [sic] to one developmental state need not be permanent; many cells can exhibit totipotency in culture, and the normal course of differentiation can be altered at many points by environmental influences. Developmental controls in plant systems can be regarded as largely exogenous to the cell, and continuously maintained. One of the more difficult problems of developmental botany has been the switch from vegetative to reproductive growth of an apical meristem, and the control of morphogenesis of the inflorescence. Postlethwait and Nelson (1964) suggested that the development of the …

The Synthesis Of (3s, 8as) 3-(2-Phenyl-2-Propyl-)-1-Oxo-Octahydro-2h-Pyrido[1, 2a] Pyrazine As A Model Compound To Test Proposed Structure-Activity Relationships And Metabolism Of The Natural Mycotoxin And Muscle Relaxant: Verruculotoxin, Karen Earlene Couch

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound verruculotoxin, a natural mycotoxin, was isolated in 1974 and found to be biologically active, having anesthetic properties. Two theories have been proposed to explain the biological activity of verruculotoxin. The first theory states that verruculotoxin is not the biologically active compound, but, rather, as a result of metabolism in the body, a biologically active metabolite is produced. The second theory states that the biological activity of verruculotoxin is dependent upon the molecules ability to mimick various co-formations with respect to the spatial arrangement of the aromatic ring and nitrogen atom. These theories are used to explain the activity …

A Survey Of The Vascular Flora Of Black Hawk County, Iowa, Karen E. Van Norman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Black Hawk County, located in the east-central part of the state of Iowa, is a political subdivision of 570 square miles. The topography of the county is the result of glaciation, erosion and deposition, causing gently rolling plains. The Cedar and the Wapsipinicon rivers transect the county from the northeast to the southwest. With their tributaries, these rivers comprise a natural drainage network which has enhanced agricultural practices throughout the county.

The vascular flora of the county was surveyed in the field during the growing seasons of 1982 and 1983. Over 1500 voucher specimens were collected. Data were also compiled …

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll Jan 1987

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metacognition is a theoretical construct used to describe a type of cognitive ability through which an individual assesses the range and quality of his/her own knowledge and is able to gain insight and control over particular aspects of his/her own cognitive and affective processes. Metacognition appears to be an important factor in development of higher level thinking skills, in acquisition of knowledge, and in reading comprehension. Because of its role in reading and learning, metacognition may prove to be an ideal construct on which to base secondary reading instruction, an area of secondary curriculum which is in particular need of …

Receptor Sites And Light Stimuli In Soybean Leaf Orientation, Raymon Alan Donahue Jan 1987

Receptor Sites And Light Stimuli In Soybean Leaf Orientation, Raymon Alan Donahue

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Seedlings of soybean (Glycine max L. L. var Northrup King S1937) exhibit diaheliotropic leaf movements, and, when water stressed, paraheliotropic leaf movements. These are controlled by the pulvinus at the base of each leaf. The receptor site for the light stimulus was located by covering portions of the leaf, including the leaf lamina, leaf veins, and pulvinus, with India ink, and observing the effect on leaf movement. The pulvinus was the receptor site for both diaheliotropic and paraheliotropic leaf movements. The role of different colors of light in diaheliotropism and paraheliotropism was determined by using filters which removed broad bands …
