Science Notes - Book News: Dictionary Of Word Roots & Combining Forms, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"What is this?" In answer to this frequently asked question, a name is usually given. Naming often terminates inquiry, but it need not if the meaning of the name is known. The meaning usually provides a bridge to inquiry into the life style of plants and animals and the function and characteristics of inanimate science objects. The Dictionary of Word Roots & Combining Forms is a concise tool for finding the interesting bits of meaning which may be derived from the names of the objects brought into the classroom.

The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1986

The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Many teachers of methods courses for future secondary science teachers probably share my observation that high marks in conventional college science courses do not always indicate a good grasp of how science has developed as a human enterprise. In spite of efforts of curriculum developers and vast expenditures of public funds to improve science teaching in our secondary schools, the typical science background of a beginning teacher consists of a body of content with traditional disciplinary boundaries created by departments that view science in terms of their own specialized subject matter. Little emphasis is given to a broad view of …

Environmental Education Teacher And Student Needs: A Teacher Survey Identifies Problems, Motivational Factors And Desired Topics For Teacher Workshops And Student Groups: Part One, Gail George

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In order to identify teaching problems and student motivational factors, and to determine which environmental topics of study are perceived to be of greatest importance for grades 4-12, the Iowa Conservation Education Center (CEC) conducted a survey of Iowa science teachers. The results of this survey should be helpful to teachers planning environmental activities or field trips. The information will also aid various organizations in their efforts to improve services for student groups and teacher workshops.

Editor's Corner - Ticket To Texas, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Although many people love the Iowa weather, some have been encouraged by it to take a ticket to Texas. Those of us who have recently traveled through Texas have met many Iowans there whose ticket to Texas was the Iowa economy. The letter which my colleague shared struck me as being a science teacher's ticket to Texas, courtesy of the Iowa economy, the Iowa legislature and the local school board.

An Overview Of Stressors Common To Stepchildren And Appropriate Counseling Interventions, Barbara Marilyn Wildung Kramer Jan 1986

An Overview Of Stressors Common To Stepchildren And Appropriate Counseling Interventions, Barbara Marilyn Wildung Kramer

Graduate Research Papers

Despite the recent research on the effects of divorce on adults and children, much less attention has been given to the effects of parental remarriage and stepfamily issues (Prosen & Farmer, 1982). With an estimated one-half million adults becoming stepparents every year and one out of every six American children under the age of eighteen living in a stepfamily, stepfamilies could be more prevalent than nuclear families by 1990 (Prosen & Farmer, 1982; Visher & Visher, 1979).

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman Jan 1986

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman

Graduate Research Papers

According to the American Psychiatric Association (1980), the characteristic traits of depression are quite well established. Symptoms include dysphoric mood, insomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of energy and fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and thoughts of death or suicidal ideation/attempt. Depressed persons also have been characterized as self-deprecating and unrealistically pessimistic as well as suffering from distorted cognitive processes (Coyne & Gotlib, 1983). The only essential criterion for a diagnosis of major depression is that the syndrome be present for at least two weeks (Willner, 1985).

Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters Jan 1986

Profile Of The Incestuous Father, Cheryl Ann Walters

Graduate Research Papers

Incest, defined by Taylor (1984) as " ... the sexual touching between an adult and a child in a family for the personal gratification of the adult", is a serious problem in the United States (p. 195). In particular, father-daughter incest has been seen by counselors and therapists as a more frequently reported problem (Finkelhor, 1984). Finkelhor's (1978) survey results stated that at least 5 women out of every 1000 had been sexually abused by their fathers. However, a more recent study by Russell (1984) reported that 1 out of 44 women had incestuous relationships with their biological fathers.

Plant Part Puzzles, Kathleen Marvin, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1986

Plant Part Puzzles, Kathleen Marvin, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A primary level lesson based on learning to know major plant parts is included in almost every elementary science textbook series. This lesson not only teaches the names of the organs of higher plants, but also offers an experience in classification using the learning cycle (Rubba, 1984). The plant part puzzles needed for this activity can be prepared easily from materials at hand and stored for reuse.

Cognitive Therapy As A Treatment Technique Of Depression, Kathleen Moon Jordan Jan 1986

Cognitive Therapy As A Treatment Technique Of Depression, Kathleen Moon Jordan

Graduate Research Papers

A substantial body of research has indicated that the cognitive theory of depression, as well as the use of cognitive therapy in the treatment there of, has experienced widespread acceptance in the psychotherapeutic community. 1 Etiological theories of depression have been diverse, ranging from speculations concerning biochemical deficiencies and hereditary-constitutional deficits and speculation concerning internal psychological factors or subtle disruptions in patterns which travel between the organisms and the environment. Despite this diversity, the observed clinical syndrome has generally been described in strikingly consistent terms. Traditionally considered to be a disorder of affect, most descriptions also specify changes in cognitive, …

A Study Of Stress Perceived By Resident Assistants At The University Of Northern Iowa, David A. Shaw

All of us are exposed to some form of stress throughout our daily lives. This stress could be experienced in a variety of ways, whether it be from our jobs, interpersonal relationships, insecurities, or other factors that affect us. The resident assistant (RA) is exposed to the same stresses as other college students, as well as the additional stress placed on one who is balancing academic pressures along with the responsibilities of the RA position.

An Economical Laminar-Flow Microbe-Free Chamber For Culturing Small Plants, J. M. Dunleavy Jan 1986

An Economical Laminar-Flow Microbe-Free Chamber For Culturing Small Plants, J. M. Dunleavy

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An economical plant growth chamber, 16 cm in diameter and 50 cm high, was made from two 4-liter glass beakers. The bottom was removed from one beaker, and a 1 cm hole cut in the bottom of the other. The bottomless beaker, when placed atop the other, telescoped slightly for firm support. Sand was placed in the bottom of the chamber as a growth substrate. A polyethylene bag was placed over the two beakers and filtered air (under pressure) and nutrient solution entered the chamber through rubber tubing. Six chambers, each with an open petri dish of nutrient agar in …
