Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr. Jan 1989

Semiquantitative Measurement Of Fission Produced Gamma Ray Radioactivity In Soils At Dubuque, Iowa, James A. Dockal, James A. Dockal Sr.

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Residual fission-product radionuclide contamination (fallout) in soils at Dubuque, Iowa was evaluated with an Exploration geometrics gamma ray scintillometer in 1985 and after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. Anomalous amounts of gamma ray radiation were found near where downspouts discharged storm runoff from the roof of a dwelling. The 1985 residual cesium-13 7 activity in the soils of the area was found to be 0.2 pCi/gram with an areal contamination of 16 ± nCi/m2. Activities associated with the soils near the discharge points of the downspouts ranged as high as 8 pCi/gram. This contamination seems to have occurred prior to …

Cytoplasmic Effect On Groat Protein Content In Lnterspecific Matings Of Avena Sativa L. And A. Sterilis L., A. Rezai, K. J. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Thirty sets of reciprocal isopopulations, each with 20 Fi-derived oat lines from the BC0, BC1, and BC2 of all possible matings among five Awia slerilis L. accessions and two A. saliva cultivars, were evaluated in a replicated field trial to determine whether groat protein content was influenced by cytoplasmic inheritance and to study associations between protein content and agronomic traits. A. slerili cytoplasm had no direct effect on groat protein content, but significant interactions between the cytoplasms and nuclear genes from A. saliva and A. s1erilis were detected. Thus, the potential may exist for improving …

Alcoholism Among Black Americans, Karen Norris-Henderson Jan 1989

Alcoholism Among Black Americans, Karen Norris-Henderson

Graduate Research Papers

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), alcohol abuse is the leading health and social problem in Black America today (Hacker, Collins, 1 & Jacobson, 1987). Data analysis from the Secretary's Task Force on Blacks and Minority Health (Ronan, 1986/87) indicated that Blacks suffer disproportionately from health consequences of alcohol abuse and appear to be at disproportionately high risk for certain alcohol related problems. Upton and Jallah (1986) cited another early study, released in 1979 by Dr. Lewis King, which found that alcoholism was the number one social problem in Black America. They further cited how …

Anger In Children, Judith L. Phillips Jan 1989

Anger In Children, Judith L. Phillips

Graduate Research Papers

In working with a variety of children, in blended families, with relationship problems, with grief issues, from dysfunctional families, and others, this writer recognized that many of these children were angry or were dealing with anger in some way. Omizo, Hershberger and Omizo (1988) confirm this awareness when they stated: "Children are seldom provided with a means of coping with angry feelings" (p. 241).

How Long Is A Snail's Pace?, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1989

How Long Is A Snail's Pace?, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For a change of pace, you and your students may find the study of land snails a stimulating adventure. Strange as it may seem, many students find pet snails amazing and lovable. Snails provide excellent opportunities for observation, experimentation and other process studies as well as providing a wealth of content concerning an animal from one of the lower phyla. And, a snail's pace is an example of one of life's great virtues -- patience. How long is a snail's pace? Considering that a snail is one foot, or has one foot, the answer must be ..... Surely not, but …

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"The Integration of Research and Teaching Science and Mathematics--a six-week (two weeks each summer) N.S.F. supported program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Contact Professor Max Dresden, Executive Director, Institute for Theoretical Physics" When I read this advertisement in the January 1985 issue of the Physics Teacher, I thought it looked interesting so I applied. In May of 1985 I was notified of my acceptance into the program, and then I wondered what I was getting into.

Inexpensive Computer Software For Science Teaching In Iowa Schools, John B. Cook Jan 1989

Inexpensive Computer Software For Science Teaching In Iowa Schools, John B. Cook

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Between January and April 1989, the author collected and compiled information on inexpensive instructional computer software to support science teaching. For each piece of software, information was collected on the topics it covered, how it could be obtained, and how much it would cost for school purchase in Iowa. The complied data was limited to inexpensive software for two reasons: (1) to keep the size of the data base manageable, and (2) to focus on software that schools can afford to obtain.

Currently, the Iowa preridophyte flora consists of 70 taxa, supported with 1656 county occurrence records; only 72 (4%) of these records are based solely on collections made before 1950.

Biological Pesticides: Biotechnology's Answer To Silent Spring, Donald H. Dean Jan 1989

Biological Pesticides: Biotechnology's Answer To Silent Spring, Donald H. Dean

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In the 25 years since the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring the public has come to realize the environmental impact of heavy use of chemical pesticides. To add insult to injury, many insects, including the disease vector, the mosquito, are now virtually resistant to standard chemical pesticides. Biotechnology is now providing a positive response to these dilemmas through the production and development of improved forms of microbial pest control agents: biological pesticides. Biological pesticides are pathogens, or predators, of insects such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, and predatory insects or vertebrates such as mosquito fish which reduce the population …

Characterization Of Aminoisobutyric Acid Transport Systems In Mcf-8, A Line Of Malignant Mouse Mammary Epithelial Cells, Bruce A. Voyles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Uptake of α-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) by MCF-8, a line of malignant mouse mammary epithelial cells derived from a D2 hyperplastic nodule outgrowth, was found to be mediated by two different transport systems. In actively dividing cells about 60% of total AIB uptake is mediated by an A-like system: transport was Na+ -dependent, was inhibited by N-methyl-AIB, was maximal at pH 7.5 and ceased at pH 6. Transport by this system was reduced by nearly 65% when cell division ceased in confluent cultures, but the addition of insulin and/or calf serum to the medium of quiescent cells restored activity. Transport by …

A Non-Gall Forming Eurosta Solidaginis (Diptera: Tephritidae), W. Bryan Stoltzfus

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Eurosta Jolidaginis (Fitch) can parasitize Solidago canadensis without forming a gall. This non-gall former apparently escapes most of the parasitism and predation of the gall forming fly. Levels of host-plane infestation by non-gall formers may approach the frequency of gall formation.

Release And Behavior Of Recombinant Bacteria In Field Studies, Steven E. Lindow Jan 1989

Release And Behavior Of Recombinant Bacteria In Field Studies, Steven E. Lindow

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Numerous opportunities exist for the utilization of genetically engineered microorganisms for useful purposes in agriculture and in waste management. An extremely diverse array of microorganisms is likely to be considered for such processes as biological control of plant pests, degradation of to toxic wastes, reclamation of rare metals and other processes. For some purposes, such as in the degradation of toxic materials, it may be possible to make biologically compromised microorganisms that will exist only in the presence of the toxic chemicals that they were designed to transform. A better understanding of the genetics, biology and physiology of microorgansims which …
