Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: S-Triazine-Resistant Plastids Chenopodium Album L., Jack Dekker, Ronald Burmester Jan 1989

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: S-Triazine-Resistant Plastids Chenopodium Album L., Jack Dekker, Ronald Burmester

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) has been reported previously but not in Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll a fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in C. album populations in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll a fluorescence assays confirmed that mutations conferring resistance exist in five (5) geographically separated populations of C. album in Iowa: relatively greater fluorescence yields were measured in untreated resistant tissue compared with untreated susceptible plants, relatively greater fluorescence yield in treated compared with untreated susceptible leaf disks; and similar fluorescence yields of treated and untreated resistant tissue. This is the …

The Scientist's Role In The Controversy Over Genetic Engineering, Regulation And Utilization Of Microorganisms: A Symposium Presented At The L00th Annual Meeting Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa April 21-23, 1988: Introduction, Arthur K. Weissinger Jan 1989

Weissinger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The introduction of technologies for the direct genetic manipulation or alteration of organisms offers tremendous promise of improved agronomic prosperity through the enhancement of existing agricultural systems and through development of alternative products and methods. These technologies also pose philosophical, socioeconomic, and environmental questions. A number of these questions were considered at the bioethics symposium that was held here at Iowa State last November, the purpose of which was to examine the social, ethical, regulatory, and legal issues associated with the application of cell culture, molecular biology, and other so-called biotechnologies to agriculture.

Public Policy On The Introduction Of Genetically Engineered Microorganisms, Anne K. Vidaver Jan 1989

Public Policy On The Introduction Of Genetically Engineered Microorganisms, Anne K. Vidaver

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

This presentation raises questions of research needs and issues. Underlying assumptions are that only beneficial or useful microorganisms will be "released"; that extensive laboratory and contained experiments will have been done prior to introduction and live microorganisms can be confined within the areas of introduction. Evidence to support these assertions will be presented. Critical needs for progress in this area include: 1) Recognition that the nature of the product introduced into the environment is of primary significance, not how the organism was genetically altered or modified. 2) Recognition that microorganisms are introduced into the environment as part of our daily …

Ecology Of Iowa Drosophila Ii. Lowland Forest And Sand Prairie, Neil J. Jennings, Robert D. Seager

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The seasonal abundances of Drosophila species collected from a lowland forest community and from a sand prairie community in northeastern Iowa are compared. With some important exceptions, the patterns seen in the lowland forest community were similar to what had been observed in a previous collection (Jennings et al. 1985). Fewer species and many fewer individuals were collected from the sand prairie community, although in general the patterns seen were similar to those of the lowland forest community. Strong evidence of microhabitat differentiation was seen in both communities. In contrast to our previous study, none of the seasonal abundance patterns …

The Vascular Flora Of Pilot Knob State Preserve, William C. Watson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Pilot Knob State Preserve is a 365 acre (147 ha) area lying within the boundaries of Pilot Knob State Park. Located in north central Iowa near the northeast corner of Hancock County, this preserve resides on the eastern morainal system of the Des Moines Lobe left from the Wisconsinan glaciation. The vegetation of the preserve is primarily a deciduous woodland on rolling hills interspersed with wetland habitats in the hollows. Iowa's only floating bog is present in one of these hollows and supports numerous vascular plants uncommon to the state. Two species, Carex cephalantha (Bailey) Bickn. and Drosera rotundifolia L., …

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh Jan 1989

The University Of Choice: Social Work Students At Uni, James G. Mccullagh

Faculty Publications

The study examined expressed reasons for choosing the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) by undergraduate students majoring in social work there. Responses of 205 social work majors to a questionnaire found that these students chose UNI primarily because of location; size; cost; the presence of a social work program; to get a good education; to be with their friends; and to continue a family tradition. Other findings indicated that 44% of students had attended other colleges previously; that many students considered other majors before deciding on social work; that 84% of the students had been born in Iowa; that 50% …

Foreign Student Enrollment In U.S. Postsecondary Institutions: Issues And Implications For Student Affairs, Cherie R. Kingkade Jan 1989

Foreign Student Enrollment In U.S. Postsecondary Institutions: Issues And Implications For Student Affairs, Cherie R. Kingkade

Graduate Research Papers

A foreign student is defined as "a citizen of another country pursuing education in a U.S. school requiring a high-school diploma or its equivalent" (Agarwal & Winkler, 1985, p.510). The leading nation for enrollment of foreign students is the United States, with more than 325,000 enrolled in 1986 (Altbach, 1986). Foreign graduate students comprised approximately 41% of the full-time graduate student enrollment in American higher education in 1987 (Friedman, 1987). These facts highlight the impact of foreign students on postsecondary institutions in the United States and the subsequent implications for foreign student affairs staff.

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Rene Dutkowski Jan 1989

The Product Distribution And Structural Assignment Of The Monobromination Products Of 7-Hydroxy-2,2,5-Trimethylchroman-4-One, Rene Dutkowski

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Rearing conditions, such as temperature and humidity, may change behavior of Drosophila species so they behave differently than wild flies. The duration fruit flies are maintained in the laboratory prior to experimentation may cause genetic changes in the organism, due to selection, inbreeding, and drift. These genetic changes may lead to different responses to a temperature and humidity gradient by long-time laboratory reared stock and stock newly obtained from the wild. Past research revealed that Drosophila robusta and Drosophila tripunctata reared at 20ºC for five years in the laboratory preferred 20.0oC and 19.2oC respectively when they were allowed to move …

Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans Jan 1989

Home Schooling: Why Some Parents Of Gifted Children Are Choosing It As An Alternative To The Public School, Patricia C. Seamans

Graduate Research Papers

Home schooling and special programs for gifted children emerged as separate issues in the late 1970s and 1980s. Naisbitt (1982) identifies home schooling as one of the examples of the megatrend away from institutional help and toward self help ln the 80s. A sign of educators' interest in the topic is noted by the fact that 85% of the research done concerning the success of home schooling has been done in the 1980s. Meanwhile, by their own choice or by state mandate, many public schools have implemented programs to serve the gifted in their district. Ignorance of the facts about …

An Analysis Of Two Instruments For Measuring Divergent Thinking In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg Jan 1989

An Analysis Of Two Instruments For Measuring Divergent Thinking In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg

Graduate Research Papers

For years, many educators have expressed an interest m, a concern for, and recognized a need for research in the area of creativity. Indeed, even those not associated with the field of education have shown concern for the nurturance of creativity in children. Starkweather (1971) quotes the following: "The best plaything for a child is not a splendid and complex rattletrap, but some simple and rough thing which may be applied to various uses and purposes, and aid to stimulate invention and contrivance" (Godey's Lady's Book, 1859). To study creativity, then, educators must integrate creativity theory and testing with child …

Acceleration As A Qualitatively Differentiated Educational Program For The Highly Gifted Learner: Its Positive And Negative Effects, Jann Weitzel Jan 1989

Acceleration As A Qualitatively Differentiated Educational Program For The Highly Gifted Learner: Its Positive And Negative Effects, Jann Weitzel

Graduate Research Papers

The provision of special educational opportunities for the most gifted members of our society is not a new idea. As early as the Fourth Century, B.C., Plato remarked in his Republic that society's task was "to compel the best natures" to provide education in order to ensure the survival of Greek democracy. The common good would best be served, he felt, by providing educational advantages for the most distinguished learners in order for them to eventually assume leadership positions. Such a desire for the optimum development of gifted potential has been an underlying reason for the return of the pendulum …

Iowa Geology: The Early Years, Wayne I. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1975 on the occasion of the first one hundred years of the Iowa Academy of Science, Robert W. Hanson summarized the history of the organization. Additional historical accounts covering many of the science disciplines were published during the centennial year. Although geology was not treated separately in these special articles, the contributions of early geologists were important to the development of science in our state. Consequently, it is appropriate to consider the contributions of early geologists in Iowa in celebration of the one hundredth annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. Included in the present report are the …

The Role Of Environmental Education In The Elementary School, Lydia G. Hamm Jan 1989

The Role Of Environmental Education In The Elementary School, Lydia G. Hamm

Graduate Research Papers

The term "the environment" conjures up a parade of horribles. No reader of the newspaper needs to be told that we are plagued by pollution, erosion, species endangerment, and the dwindling of the resources on which industrial society depends. Each is inundated by the media with details--PCB spill, acid rain, increase of carbon dioxide, loss of estuaries and wetlands, the extinction of wildlife, dumping of toxic waste, and many more.

Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson Jan 1989

Children Of Divorce: Educational Interventions, Carolyn L. H. Stephenson

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study is to 1) identify developmental responses to divorce, 2) identify the changes in life style and family functioning caused by divorce, and 3) identify how educators can effectively intervene when appropriate. This paper relates the developmental responses of children to divorce from preschool age through adolescence as reviewed in the longintudinal studies of Judith Wallerstein and colleagues, and other studies and articles. The review of literature, as it relates divorce to the effect on children's academic progress, highlights the lack of studies with this focus and the need for further research in the area.

Little People Learn Numbers, Nancy A. Murphy Jan 1989

Little People Learn Numbers, Nancy A. Murphy

Graduate Research Papers

The importance of early childhood education to the balance of a child's academic career has been the subject of myriad articles and studies in recent decades. Numerous school districts are operating all-day kindergarten programs, pre-kindergarten programs, and preschool programs to ensure a proper beginning to a child's challenging journey through the public school system. All subject areas have been scrutinized, but the area of number learning in young children has been particularly popular.

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver Jan 1989

Brain Laterality And Education, Jean L. Schryver

Graduate Research Papers

Although the brain functions as a whole unit with both sides being active, there are areas of specialization within the brain. Research indicates that the human brain is composed of two hemispheres, which are capable of functioning independently of one another. According to Michael Gazzaniga (1983), the left hemisphere is responsible for linear, symbolic, sequential and verbal thought. The right hemisphere is responsible for holistic, concrete, random and pictorial thoughts. The left can be compared to a computer while the right is more creative and intuitive. Individuals tend to develop a preference for using one side over the other, although …

Polypeptides Associated With Spikelet Development In Zea Mays L. Ear Organogenesis, Teresa A. Schoneman Findlay

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A number of similar models, i.e., Bonner's (1965) switching networks model, Kinet et al.'s (1985) evocation/determination model, Heslop-Harrison (1969) and Poethig's (1988) phytomer model, have been proposed to describe morphogenesis in plants as a product of sequential changes in cellular protein complement resulting from differential gene expression. The switch point model for Zea mays development predicts changes in the protein complements at each successive developmental stage. The objective of this study was to map, using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE), the protein complement of three morphological stages of the z. mays ear: spikelet primordia (SP), spikelet primordia with glumes …
