Woodrow Wilson National Science Leadership Program: Princeton, 1989, Paul D. Jones

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"Gee, Dad, Princeton! Do you realize that Einstein was at Princeton?" This is what my son said as I read my acceptance letter from the Woodrow Wilson Institute. I thought of his words as I turned off the highway onto Nassau Avenue in the heart of the Princeton campus. The old ivy-covered buildings interspersed with new modern research facilities are my idea of what a college campus should look like. After finding my dorm and getting settled in, I began to explore and to learn about my colleagues. The group consisted of people from all over the United States, truly …

Editor's Corner - On The Importance Of High School Biology: A Note From The Assistant Editor For Biology, Norris M. Durham

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Biology is life: human life, animal life, plant life, protozoan life. Its importance should never be underestimated! Why, then, are there so many students entering my university courses with no knowledge of high school biology whatsoever? It is unthinkable that a person can complete high school without having had a course in the life science.

Improving Science Teacher Preparation: Perspective On Standards, Robert L. Fisher Jan 1989

Improving Science Teacher Preparation: Perspective On Standards, Robert L. Fisher

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

They are all telling you how to educate your future teachers of science: Legislators are passing mandates; professional committees publish report after report; state bureaucrats are holding the line on regulations that have been around for years; the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is adopting new standards; and the guys down the hall have suddenly become experts on what you are doing to educate teachers. Too much! But, if you are a college science instructor involved with the preparation of science teachers for the K-12 schools, there are developments from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) …

Alcohol Education In Colleges And Universities: Goals, Programs, And Evaluation, Marilyn Jean Dettmer Jan 1989

Alcohol Education In Colleges And Universities: Goals, Programs, And Evaluation, Marilyn Jean Dettmer

Graduate Research Papers

A constantly recurring problem on college campuses is that of alcohol use and abuse. The literature reveals that a high percentage of college students drink and that many drink excessively. Gonzalez and Broughton (1986) reported on 1977 studies by Blane and Hewitt which showed that the college student population has a higher number of drinkers than any other population group in the United States. Approximately eighty-five percent of American college students drink beer, wine, or distilled spirits compared to about seventy percent of the general population. Gonzalez (1986) reported on 1979 studies by Wechsler and McFadden which indicated that upwards …

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton Jan 1989

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.

The Learning Disabled Student In Postsecondary Institutions: An Overview, Gail Ellen West Jan 1989

The Learning Disabled Student In Postsecondary Institutions: An Overview, Gail Ellen West

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, the focus on the learning disabled has been at the elementary and, more recently, the secondary school level. However, since the influx of so many students into postsecondary institutions, the emphasis is changing. Vogel (1982) stated that the number of programs for the learning disabled in higher education has grown significantly during the '80s as a response to concerns from learning disabled students, their parents, and professionals, and from the passage of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. However, the number of postsecondary schools offering adequate educational and support programs to learning disabled students is still small.

Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker Jan 1989

Characteristics And Treatment Of Bulimia, Cindy Becker

Graduate Research Papers

Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by the episodic ingestion of large quantities of food in a relatively short period of time and, in most cases, these •binges• are followed by self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse or fasting (Ordman & Kirschenbaum, 1986). The vast majority of bulimic cases are women (only 10% are male) and it is estimated that as much as 20% of high school and collegiate-aged females are actively engaged in bulimic behaviors on a regular basis (Hale & Ware, 1984). More specifically, these behaviors include various aspects of the following according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual …
