Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes Jan 1990

Tell-Tail Adaptations For Respiration And Rapid Escape In A Freshwater Oligochaete (Lumbriculus Variegatus Mull.), Charles D. Drewes

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The aquatic oligochaete, Lumbrimlus variegatus (Order Lumbriculida; Family Lumbriculidae), utilizes a combination of postural and anatomical specializations that enhance gas exchange across the dorsal surface of posterior segments as these segments lay exposed at the air-water interface. Predator avoidance by exposed posterior segments is enhanced by neurobehavioral mechanisms involving a well-developed lateral giant nerve fiber system that mediates rapid escape withdrawal of the worm's tail in response to shadow or mechanosensory stimuli.

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins Jan 1990

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Salamander larvae of the species Ambystoma tigrinum are dimorphic in northwestern Iowa. In addition to common typical morphs, there exist rare, specialized cannibal morphs, which are induced environmentally by crowding. Cannibal morph phenotypes are characterized morphologically by their large size, proportionately large heads and hypertrophied vomerine teeth, and behaviorally by facultative cannibalism. During metamorphosis amphibians are particularly sensitive to predation. To help understand why cannibal morphs are uncommon, we have raised cannibal and typical morphs in isolation and under crowded conditions to compare the timing and duration of metamorphosis between these morphs. Results show that larger larvae, most of which …

The Mating Systems And Pollination Biology Of Three Species Of Verbena (Verbenaceae), Robert W. Cruden, Kristina K. Baker, Thomas E. Cullinan, Karen A. Disbrow, Kelly L. Douglas, John D. Erb, Kenneth J. Kirsten, Mary L. Malik, Elizabeth A. Turner, Jonathon A. Weier, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Because their flowers can be cross- and/or self-pollinated Verbena stricta, V hastata and V urticifolia are facultatively xenogamous. We suggest the flowers can be cross-pollinated because I) the fruit set of caged plants was substantially lower than that of open-pollinated plants, i.e. pollinators were necessary for typical fruit set and 2) the flowers of each species attracted a diverse array of hymenopteran, dipteran and lepidopteran pollinators that were capable of moving pollen between plants. Self-pollination was low due to the spatial separation of anthers and stigmas and/or an angled corolla that decreased the likelihood of pollen dropping from the anthers …

Assessing Joint Mobility Of The Lower Extremities When Walking In Water Through The Use Of Motion Analysis, Jennifer Evitts Jan 1990

Assessing Joint Mobility Of The Lower Extremities When Walking In Water Through The Use Of Motion Analysis, Jennifer Evitts

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Despite the lack of any attempts to quantify the ROM while walking in water, several products have recently been introduced which utilize the concept of an underwater treadmill to harness the advantages of walking in water, one of which includes an increase in ROM. The purpose of this study is to utilize motion analysis to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the ROM of the ankle, knee, and hip when walking in the water and to compare these results to those observed when walking on land .

Adaptive Coloration In Texas Fiddler Crabs (Uca), Carl L. Thurman Jan 1990

Adaptive Coloration In Texas Fiddler Crabs (Uca), Carl L. Thurman

Faculty Work

Five species of fiddler crabs occupy a variety of intertidal niches along the Texas coast. Each Uca is adapted to a specific array of physical factors in the environment. Some aspects of their adaptations are reflected by body color. Interspecific differences in morphological coloration are correlated with camouflage and substrate characteristics. Intraspecific color variation is expressed through neurosecretion-mediated physiological change in cellular pigment distribution. Adaptation to a dark or light colored background reveals different "secondary" chromomotor capabilities for each species. In addition, pigments in melanophores, leucophores and erythrophores exhibit circadian rhythms of dispersion and aggregation.

During a "primary" chromomotor response …

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot Jan 1990

Changes In A Prairie Bird Population From 1940 To 1989, Neil P. Bernstein, Kristine K. Baker, Sherry R. Wilmot

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We repeated a bird census of a prairie/field community that was done by Kendeigh (1941) in 1940. Changes in the bird populations were compared with changes in vegetation, agricultural land use for the county, and trends in urbanization. Grassland birds did decline in abundance due to causes similar to those cited in other studies. The increase in forest and edge nesting species was more unusual to this study, and probably correlated with the woody succession that had occurred.

Gas Exchange Of Four Viburnum Species, Lisa Gayle De Berg Jan 1990

Gas Exchange Of Four Viburnum Species, Lisa Gayle De Berg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In the natural environment, a plant's gas exchange and water use efficiency characteristics in response to environmental stresses such as vapor pressure deficit, temperature, light intensity, and water potential may vary according to physiological and morphological species differences, leaf types (deciduous or evergreen), and habitat types (northern and southern). In the field, laboratory, and growth chamber, the effect of vapor pressure deficit, temperature, and light intensity on gas exchange characteristics was investigated for four woody shrub species from the genus Viburnum. The species under investigation include: y. rhytidophyllum (northern evergreen), y. awabuki (southern evergreen), y. dentatum (northern deciduous), and y. …

An examination in Chapter 2 of contemporary perspectives on power includes the following areas: sources of power in marriage, historical changes in marital power, factors affecting power and other considerations of power. factors are inseparable. It becomes evident that these

Positive Effects Of Humor: No Laughing Matter In The Education Of Students, Edward C. Poynar Jan 1990

Positive Effects Of Humor: No Laughing Matter In The Education Of Students, Edward C. Poynar

Graduate Research Papers

Frequent] y, responses from student surveys identify "has a sense of humor" among the characteristics of a good teacher. Unfortunately, this is not a quality that is emphasized in teacher education programs so apparently it is not deemed worthy of consideration by teacher educators. Yet, the thought of humor in the classroom does have a certain appeal and possibly raises a few questions. What purpose can a teacher's sense of humor serve for a student? Does educational research indicate any cause and effect relationship between humor and cognitive development? How does humor affect the thinking processes? If the theory of …

Factors Related To The Occurrence Of Certain Prairie Graminoid Species In Black Hawk County, Iowa, Roadsides, Pauline Mary Drobney

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The native vegetation of Iowa was primarily tallgrass prairie and currently exists only in small isolated parcels, including some remnants occurring in roadsides. Roadside prairie remnants are important for historical, environmental, aesthetic, scientific, and economic reasons. Information about factors influencing the occurrance of roadside prairie vegetation could be useful to roadside vegetation managers in development of initial vegetation surveys and subsequent to restoration of roadside prairie vegetation.

This study was conducted to determine what factors most affected the percent coverage of prairie graminoids in roadsides; particularly soil moisture availability, drainage, soil disturbance, and availability of a prairie seed sources. Prairie …

A "common core" of TA procedures which are being used by mission agencies was identified. These were: (a) on-site field investigation, (b) committee meetings, (c) brainstorming, (d) personal interviews, (e) review of related …

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas Jan 1990

Incidence Of Adolescent Depression In A Parochial High School, Silvio R. Encinas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In recent years the problem of depression among children and adolescents has become increasingly important to educators and mental health professionals such as school psychologists. Documented increases in depressive symptoms among school-age youth may be reflected in an increase in acting out behaviors in the school settings which, in turn may adversely affect academic performance, teacher expectations, and peer relationships. This study investigated the incidence of depression in a parochial high school using a self-report procedure and compared with non-parochial studies. Differences between male and female students were analyzed, it was expected to find also an inverse correlation between the …
