Evaluation Of Passive Integrated Transponders As A Marking Technique For Turkey Poults, Dewaine H. Jackson, William H. Bunger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Injectable, passive integrated transponders (PITs) were evaluated as a marking technique for newly hatched wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus) poults. Seven of 12, 3-day-old domestic turkey poults received a PIT implant and a wing tag. A control group of five poults received only a wing tag. Two subcutaneous implant sites were evaluated, along the right side of the neck and in the area between the right inner thigh and breast. One of7 PITs failed or was expelled during the first week. Four scanning errors, in which the PIT was present yet not detected during the initial scanning attempt, occurred in …

Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore Jan 1993

Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1900, the range of the Great-tailed Grackle extended north of the Mexican border only into Texas. Since then, it has expanded its range greatly. It now nests in 14 states and has strayed to an additional eight states and three Canadian provinces. Much of this expansion has occurred since 1960. Great-tails often stray far from their normal range, especially in spring. Most of these strays are single individuals. In states where they have nested, breeding birds typically reach the state a few years after the first reports of the species. Great-tailed Grackles do well in a variety of human …

Gesell And Vygotsky: Alternative Approaches To Readiness, Melissa L. Heston Jan 1993

Gesell And Vygotsky: Alternative Approaches To Readiness, Melissa L. Heston

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

The concept of "readiness" has a long history within the realm of developmental psychology and an almost equally long history within the realm of education. This concept can be traced to the early work of Arnold Gesell and his colleagues who collected extensive data on the developmental advances of children (Gesell & Ilg, 1949). Gesell placed heavy emphasis on the role of biological factors including genetics in determining the rate at which individual children progressed through a universal and hierarchical set of developmental milestones. The environment, provided it fell within the extremely wide range of normal environments, played little role …

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker Jan 1993

Mutant Weeds Of Iowa: V. S-Triazine Resistant Setaria Faberi Herrm, R. Thornhill, J. Dekker

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

S-triazine resistance in giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.) has been reported previously, but not in the midwestern U.S. corn belt or Iowa. A study was conducted using a chlorophyll fluorescence assay to confirm the presence of resistance in one S. faberi population in Iowa. Variable chlorophyll fluorescence assays confirmed that a population of this species with this type of resistance exists in Iowa. This is the first report of s-triazine resistance in S. faberi, and the fourth species with this type of herbicide resistance, found in an Iowa agroecosystem.

Public Policy & Economic Justifications For Renewable Energy, Dean Eyler Jan 1993

Public Policy & Economic Justifications For Renewable Energy, Dean Eyler

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

We lie at a unique place in history, one where humanity's drive to industrialize has created an environmental crisis that may threaten the very existence of the planet. The new challenges posed by environmental crises are becoming shockingly apparent. Scientists are discovering, and illustrating to policy-makers, new ways in which we are destroying the earth and its surrounding atmosphere. Although these kinds of revelations are by no means new, the scale of destruction in these scenarios is immensely greater. Warming of the atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect, depletion of the ozone layer, destruction of forests, acid rain, air pollution, …

Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith Jan 1993

Advances In Biomolecule Analysis: Ftms Of Macromolecules, Curtiss D. Hanson, Ira M. Simet, Suzanne R. Smith

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The development of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) as an analytical technique has opened new avenues to the analysis of high molecular weight biomolecules. Because mass analysis is based on a detection of a frequency, it is possible to obtain high resolution mass measurements without sacrificing sensitivity. The unique ability to analyze high mass ions is based in the design of a passive ExB ion trap. Although in the past, field inhomogeneities have limited this technique, recent developments in both trap designs and excitation techniques have resulted in major improvements in both sensitivity and resolution.

The Gifted/Learning Disabled Student: A Contradiction In The Classroom, Caroline M. Bredekamp Jan 1993

The Gifted/Learning Disabled Student: A Contradiction In The Classroom, Caroline M. Bredekamp

Graduate Research Papers

The following study is a review of current literature concerning identification processes, as well as a delineation of appropriate learning strategies for gifted/learning disabled students. The analysis continues with an examination of the needs of a potentially gifted/learning disabled student. Throughout his academic career, the subject of this analysis experienced difficulties in school. Despite his high intelligence, he did not achieve academically according to either grade level testing or batteries measuring personal aptitude. The resulting combination of the review of literature and the student analysis produces, from the viewpoint of best recommended practice, suggested strategies for educators teaching paradoxical learners. …

Essential Learner Characteristics In Instructional Design, Fong-Chin Fan Jan 1993

Essential Learner Characteristics In Instructional Design, Fong-Chin Fan

Graduate Research Papers

"The role of the professional educator is to be familiar with those factors affecting learning and to design educational experiences that maximize the learning that occurs" (Armstrong, 1987, p. 157). If professional educators want learners to gain the most from education, they must consider those factors affecting learners' learning. For example, as noted by Kemp (1985), suppose that you had never known the design of instruction, and you begin your lecture at the first class meeting of your course. You have put a lot of work into developing the beginning unit in order to influence students with the value of …

Understanding Learning Styles And Their Implications For Education, Linda Jones Jan 1993

Understanding Learning Styles And Their Implications For Education, Linda Jones

Graduate Research Papers

Today, more than ever, a main concern of educators is how students attain a given piece of information or acquire a skill (Posey, 1984). This concern over how students learn has led to research in the area of learning styles. Learning styles are defined as "personally preferred ways of dealing with information and experience of learning that crosses content areas" (Della-Dora and Blanchard, 1979, p.22).

Mechanistic Studies On The Preparation Of The Hantzsch’S Base From Ethyl Acetoacetate And Chloromethylmethyl Ether, Huo-Jin Hsieh

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dihydropyridines, which were first studied by Hantzsch in 1882, now bear his name. A new synthesis of Hantzsch 's base, 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxy-l ,4- dihydropyridine (lb), was discovered. The preparation of Hantzsch's base (lb) from new starting materials, ethyl acetoacetate (3) and chloromethylmethyl ether (4), was described. Ethyl acetoacetate was reacted with sodium amide in liquid ammonia followed by chloromethylmethyl ether to form the 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxy1,4-dihydropyridine (lb) in 84% overall yield. Compound (lb) was further identified by its oxidation to the corresponding pyridine, 2,6-dimethyl-3,5-dicarboethoxypyridine ( 11 b) by glacial acetic acid. A mechanism for the formation of the compound ( 1 b) was …

International Volunteer Exchange: An Attitudinal Study Among Iowa And Tijuana, Mexico Environmental Organizations, Rosa M. Bustamante

Graduate Research Papers

Exchanging ideas stimulates people's imagination, facilitating creativity and productivity. Three world issues have the opportunity to be linked through this stimulus: international cooperation, environmentalism, and volunteerism.

The link could be manifested in the form of an international volunteer exchange program (IVE), where interested volunteers from Iowa (a state in a developed country), would go to Tijuana (a city in a developing country) to work in an environmental organization, and volunteers from Tijuana would come to Iowa to work in environmental organizations. Through the use of volunteers, nations would be able to work together and learn about environmental protection from one …

Single Mothers And Their Sons: Everyday Communication As A Foundation For Relationships And Children's Coping With Divorce, Marcia Dixon Jan 1993

Single Mothers And Their Sons: Everyday Communication As A Foundation For Relationships And Children's Coping With Divorce, Marcia Dixon

Iowa Journal of Communication

That divorce is on the rise is a well known fact. Also well documented is the rise in single parent households due to divorce and other factors. Although several researchers have studied the effects of divorce upon children (Hetherington, Stanley-Hagan & Anderson, 1989; Tschann, Johnston, Kline, & Wallerstein, 1989), there have been few studies of the naturally occurring interaction between single parents and their children. This is no longer acceptable, not only because of the developing clarity of the work on divorce and single parent families, but also because of recent developments in methodology that make it possible to learn …

The Impact Of Employee Pregnancy On Performance Appraisal Ratings And Salary Recommendations, Debra K. Kettner Damge

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study explored the influence of pregnancy on evaluative ratings and recommendations of salary increase in a paper and pencil performance appraisal exercise. Research relating to the status of women in employment, the performance appraisal process, bias in employment decision making toward women and persons with disabilities, and reactions toward pregnancy was examined. It is suggested that women who experience pregnancy during employment, especially in male sex-typed fields, may be negatively evaluated and compensated, relative to women who experience non-sex-typed medical conditions. Subjects were members of a professional human resource association and undergraduate students majoring in business. Subjects were given …

Gender-Related Differences In Adolescents In The Study Of Heat Transfer, Linda L. Norris Jan 1993

Gender-Related Differences In Adolescents In The Study Of Heat Transfer, Linda L. Norris

Graduate Research Papers

As we approach the year 2000, males and females in the United States differ markedly in their representation in science -related careers. Although women comprise nearly 48% of the pool of professional workers, they represent only 25% of all scientists (Martinez, 1992). The influences and direct causes of gender differences in scientific aspiration and achievement are many, they are varied, and they are interactive. But students' attitudes toward and interest in science should not be overlooked. There is evidence that attitudes and interests might be shaped or influenced in some measure by experiences in the classroom.

Drama Education: A Teaching Strategy For Young Children Affected By Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder, Janice C. Miller Jan 1993

Drama Education: A Teaching Strategy For Young Children Affected By Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder, Janice C. Miller

Graduate Research Papers

According to many experts, Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) represents the most common developmental problem in school children (Coleman & Levine, 1988; Goodyear & Hynd 1992; Henker & Whalen, 1989). Children diagnosed with ADHD share a group of symptoms including: impulsiveness, inappropriate attention span, distractibility, and in some cases, hyperactivity (American Psychiatriatric Association [APA], 1987). Problems associated with ADHD result in chronic academic and social failure (Parker, 1990). This study is a concerted effort to help parents and teachers understand the difficulties children affected by ADHD experience and to present a strategy that will help the ADHD affected child achieve success.
