Estimation Of Percent Body Fat By Hydrostatic Weighing In High Schools, Fred W. Kolkhorst Jan 1993

Estimation Of Percent Body Fat By Hydrostatic Weighing In High Schools, Fred W. Kolkhorst

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Concerns with fitness have increased interest in body composition and ideal body weight. Although anthropometric (e.g. skinfold) measurements can quickly determine general body composition, hydrostatic weighings are more accurate. While most exercise physiology laboratories on university campuses have a specialized tank for performing hydrostatic weighings, adequate stations can be set up in any swimming pool for a minimal initial cost. Several scientific concepts can be demonstrated during this exercise: measurement of lung volumes, determination of body density and calculation of percent body fat.

The Early History And Recent Trends In Iowa Herpetology, Reeve M. Bailey, James L. Christiansen Jan 1993

The Early History And Recent Trends In Iowa Herpetology, Reeve M. Bailey, James L. Christiansen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Herpetological exploration of Iowa began in 1823 with Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains. From that time until an 1892 publication by Osborn based on Iowa specimens, herpetological research in the state was minor and incidental. Several significant reports appeared after that date involving analysis of Iowa specimens and from 1938 to 1944 a major base-line collection of the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa was established. Studies after that time have added a few species to Iowa’s known herpetofauna but recently have concentrated not only on composition of the fauna and distribution, but emphasized population changes, ecological relationships, and better …

The Foster Child And The School Counselor, Barbara A. Schmitt Jan 1993

The Foster Child And The School Counselor, Barbara A. Schmitt

Graduate Research Papers

John sits quietly in his sixth-grade classroom, trying to concentrate on his school work. Coming to this particular school at the beginning of fifth grade, he sometimes finds himself thinking of his past schools and homes. His current home, (not including his former adoptive home), is his fourth foster home since he and his sister were removed from their biological parents' home eight years ago. John's initial out-of-home placement was a result of neglect and abuse inflicted by his natural parents. Subsequent placements were made because of further abuse, time constraints, and lack of interest.

International Perspectives On Science Education, Mark A. Grey Jan 1993

International Perspectives On Science Education, Mark A. Grey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since the 1983 publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education), comparisons of the American education system with those of other countries have become commonplace. Hundreds of articles on the subject have appeared in the popular, professional and academic literature, as well as in a number of books. Comparisons have also been driven by the "America 2000" campaign. The challenge to science educators in this campaign is explicit: "By the year 2000, United States students will be first in the world in science and mathematics achievement."

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada Jan 1993

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1986 we studied phytoplankton in the mid-reaches of Pool 8, which is a typical navigation pool of the Upper Mississippi River. During years of normal discharge, the areas studied usually become distinctly different from each other (ranging from free-flowing river to stagnant marsh) as the ice-free season progresses. These differences among sites did not occur during our study because the discharge into Pool 8 during 1986 was about 85% greater than the 10-yr mean discharge (1972-1982). Moreover, differences among areas were not observed with respect to physical and chemical characteristics such as photic zone depth, temperature, dissolved nitrogen and …

The Culture Of Schooling: Emerging Questions For Assessment Reformers, David Stickrod Jan 1993

The Culture Of Schooling: Emerging Questions For Assessment Reformers, David Stickrod

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

When Mark Twain wrote, "There are lies, damned lies, and statistics," he must have been referring to American education. By citing the appropriate research, one could make a case for the merits of just about any type of assessment to indicate school learning, evaluate schools, and gain admission to college.

While Monty Neill (1989) kept watch over the overuse and misuse of standardized tests, Gerald Bracey (1992) and Harold Hodgkinson (1993) wrote that, on the basis of our standardized test scores and international comparisons, and the underlying reasons for those scores, schools are not nearly so bad as the popular …

Teaching The Nature Of Science, Gerald R. Walsh Jan 1993

Teaching The Nature Of Science, Gerald R. Walsh

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Early in my teaching career, I came to the conclusion that my colleagues did not approach science in the same manner as language arts, social studies or math teachers approached their subjects. While we were trying to "stuff' our students with all kinds of information of a specific nature, they focused upon producing a general literacy. They did not presume the majority of their students would one day become authors, mathematicians or social workers; instead they assumed that all students required communication skills within their respective subjects. Their mission seemed to be the promotion of literacy within the framework of …

Iowanet Update, Jack Gerlovich, Paul Joslin Jan 1993

Iowanet Update, Jack Gerlovich, Paul Joslin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"How come space is so dark if it is occupied by trillions of stars that are all so bright like our Sun?" asked a Des Moines second grader. His question was answered by three very different people: a physics teacher, a high school physics student and a retired attorney. All gave slightly different answers; the student received a rich and immediate response to a question that could not be answered with local school resources. This student's opportunity was made possible by his school's participation in the IOWANET computer conferencing network. The following article will help teachers understand and appreciate the …

Implications For Counselors When Working With Gay And Lesbian Adolescents, Lois Groth Jan 1993

Implications For Counselors When Working With Gay And Lesbian Adolescents, Lois Groth

Graduate Research Papers

Living as a member of the gay and lesbian community has become increasingly accepted by the general public. However, some people continue to view the homosexual population with fear and hatred (Thomas, 1992). Although statistics vary, the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, Inc. (1987), estimated that 10% of the population is homosexual. Of that 1 0%, as many as 34% have attempted suicide
