Adolescents And Aids Education: A Role For School Psychologists, Tanya I. Clausen Jan 1994

Adolescents And Aids Education: A Role For School Psychologists, Tanya I. Clausen

Graduate Research Papers

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease that is affecting many people throughout the world (Ralston, 1988). The virus that causes AIDS is known as the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIDS is considered the epidemic of our generation. It has tested scientific knowledge, questioned private values, and depleted our strength (Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1993a). To face the many challenges that lie ahead, adolescents must have scientific, dependable information about HIV and AIDS (CDC, 1993b). AIDS was first reported in the United States in 1981 (Benza & Zumwalde, 1987; CDC, 1993a). By the end of 1992, …

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceptions Of The Physics Teaching Experiences Of Selected Iowa Teachers Who Have An Undergraduate Major In Biology, Jody Williams Bintz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of the physics teaching experiences of selected Iowa physics teachers who have an undergraduate major in biology. Using a qualitative approach, 18 teachers who met the criteria of the study were interviewed in person or by telephone. The transcribed interviews served as the data which was analyzed inductively throughout the study. As the interview process continued, patterns emerged in the experiences of these teachers and in how these experiences affected their perceptions of teaching physics. While perceptions of the first physics teaching experience varied, all those interviewed reported feeling more …

Examining The Existence Of Burnout In Municipal Leisure Service Organizations In The State Of Iowa, Ronald D. Ramsing Jan 1994

Examining The Existence Of Burnout In Municipal Leisure Service Organizations In The State Of Iowa, Ronald D. Ramsing

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The term burnout was developed to describe a phenomenon modern work forces were experiencing. Organizations were facing high rates of absenteeism, low productivity, low quality, and reduced economic gains because of this phenomenon. In the later stages of burnout, employees were facing increased levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a sense of diminished accomplishment in their jobs. Although large amounts of research have been conducted in professions such as nursing, teaching, and social work, very little exploration of burnout has occured [sic] in municipal leisure service organizations. The purpose of this study was to explore the existence of burnout within …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Gary L. Whitmore Jan 1994

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Gary L. Whitmore

Graduate Research Papers

At some point in the near future, I hope to become the administrator of an elementary school. As I have continued the course work that will eventually qualify me for this position, a number of questions have surfaced in regards to this end goal. What type of role model will the principal need to be to the students, staff, and the community as a whole? What would the principal, as educational leader, want to accomplish? How will the teachers and principal work together to arrive at these decisions? And, will I be able to manage the day to day complexities …

Conceptual Representation Of The Newtonian Model Of Motion In University Physics Students, GiannēS ChatzēGeōRgiou Jan 1994

Conceptual Representation Of The Newtonian Model Of Motion In University Physics Students, GiannēS ChatzēGeōRgiou

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to investigate how undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa who had taken prior coursework on non-calculus general physics with a unit on mechanics understand the Newtonian model of motion. In general, the study was concerned with reasoning strategies, the preconceptions that give rise to these strategies, and the schema that might be inferred from the preconceptions. In particular, the study focused on the three fundamental notions of the Newtonian model of motion: (a) that uniform straight line motion is equivalent to rest, (b) that motion is relative to an inertial frame of …

The Relationship Between Parental Involvement And Adolescents’ Alcohol Use, Chad A. Jensen Jan 1994

The Relationship Between Parental Involvement And Adolescents’ Alcohol Use, Chad A. Jensen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a significant effect between adolescent alcohol use and parental involvement. The sample consisted of 354 students who were enrolled in a northwest Iowa school. All students were involved in physical education classes. The Adolescent Alcohol Involvement Scale by John Mayer and William J. Filstead was used to measure alcohol usage among students. A questionnaire designed by the researcher entitled Parental Involvement Scale was constructed to ascertain parental involvement in an adolescent's life. Responses show that there was a considerable amount of alcohol usage in this school system. Two hundred …

Alcohol Abuse Among Female College Students, Luanne Renee Hoskins Jan 1993

Alcohol Abuse Among Female College Students, Luanne Renee Hoskins

Graduate Research Papers

Within the past six years, there have been three major studies that have addressed the issue of the significance of researching differences between drinking patterns of male and female college students (Chomak & Collins, 1987; Temple, 1987; Schnur & MacDonald, 1988). There has been little research done with the area of female drinking behavior and the authors of these major studies have indicated a need for further research in this area.

Schools And The Blended Family, Randy O. Morris Jan 1993

Schools And The Blended Family, Randy O. Morris

Graduate Research Papers

Statistics show that children of blended families are a rapidly growing population in schools. Some demographers predict that as many as one-third of all children born in the 1980's may live with a stepparent before they are 18 (Kantrowitz & Wingert, 1990). School personnel have predominantly related to students' families under the assumption that all two-parent families were nuclear, intact, biological families. There is a need for schools to make adjustments to acknowledge the existence of the growing number of stepchildren and blended families in society (Crosbie-Burnett & Skyles, 1989). 1 Writers differ in their definition of blended families. A …

Demonstration Classrooms: A Thematic Approach To Science/Mathematics Integration, Carl W. Bollwinkel, Barbara A. Bonnett, Rosalie J. Cochran Jan 1993

Demonstration Classrooms: A Thematic Approach To Science/Mathematics Integration, Carl W. Bollwinkel, Barbara A. Bonnett, Rosalie J. Cochran

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A fundamental principle of ecology is that "everything is interconnected." This observation holds true in the academic as well as the natural world; if we study an environmental issue in depth, we find that it cannot be resolved by means of any single discipline. Environmental studies transcend all disciplines so as to include the sciences, mathematics, technology, social studies, language arts and the practical and fine arts. The science component, ecology, is itself an integrating rather than a splintering science. It draws together the traditionally separate disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics and earth science. Mathematics provides a tool for quantifying …

Model Demonstration Elementary Classrooms In Northeast Iowa: The Luther College Project, Darrel Hoff, Joyce Becker, Nanette Eklund, Wendy Stevens

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Luther College has a tradition of elementary teacher preparation stretching back to the tum of the century. It was therefore fitting that Luther College receive the only Eisenhower model demonstration program grant given to an Iowa four-year college. Built on outreaches and contacts developed by a teacher enhancement summer workshop held on the Luther Campus in 1993, the new program extends its outreach to the entire Northeast Iowa region.
