The Community Support Program's Role In Building Social Support For The Schizophrenic Client, Patricia A. Jebe Jan 1995

The Community Support Program's Role In Building Social Support For The Schizophrenic Client, Patricia A. Jebe

Graduate Research Papers

Stroul {1986) wrote that in the 1950s and 1960s two events occurred that have changed the way people with chronic mental illness live today. The first event was the development of new medications which could control many of the symptoms of the illnesses, thus leading the way to the release of the majority of inpatients from hospitals and institutions into the communities. The second major event, as mentioned by Stroul, was the concurrent development of the community health movement. From this movement a number of programs have grown, including the Community Support Program (CSP), which was initiated by the National …

The Prevalence Of Females Diagnosed As Conduct Disordered When Dsm-Iii And When Dsm-Iii-R Are Employed: A Comparison, Jodee Jane Bohr Jan 1995

The Prevalence Of Females Diagnosed As Conduct Disordered When Dsm-Iii And When Dsm-Iii-R Are Employed: A Comparison, Jodee Jane Bohr

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, significant gender differences have been reported in the prevalence rates of conduct disordered youth (Zoccolillo, 1993). This differential has led to considerable confusion concerning the nature of the disorder and the individuals directly affected. Further, this differential has made it difficult for practitioners, in schools and in other settings, to comprehend the nature of conduct disorders within a rapidly changing society. Zoccolillo reports that male:female ratios have ranged anywhere from 3:1 to 9.3:8. Reasons for this variation are unclear, but may be associated with such factors as the various criteria employed, rapid change of gender roles in society, age, …

The Efficacy Of Group Treatment For Bulimia, Jeanne R. Weakland Jan 1995

The Efficacy Of Group Treatment For Bulimia, Jeanne R. Weakland

Graduate Research Papers

Bulimia is ultimately a life threatening behavior which involves eliminating food or calories through self-induced vomiting, enamas, laxatives, diuretics, diet pills, and/or compulsive exercise (Beasley & Knightly, 1994). These methods can result in serious or fatal health risks such as dental problems, tearing and bleeding of the throat, kidney damage, muscle weakness, and cardiac malfunction (Tannenhaus, 1992).

Effectiveness Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anorexia Nervosa, Laura Moeller Jan 1995

Effectiveness Of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Anorexia Nervosa, Laura Moeller

Graduate Research Papers

Today in the United States, we have become a society so worshipful of bodily thinness that millions suffer to attain 2 it - some even to the point of death. How did we get this way? Fear of obesity appears to be deeply ingrained in our society as a result of the cultural preoccupation with obesity and the value placed on being slim (Herzog, Keller, Strober, Yeh, & Pai, 1992). Television and magazines promote the goal of thinness with regard to both beauty and health. Love, happiness, admiration and wealth are closely identified with a slender form (Clark, Feldman, & …

Etiology And Treatment Of Panic Disorder, Linda M. Kennicott Jan 1995

Etiology And Treatment Of Panic Disorder, Linda M. Kennicott

Graduate Research Papers

Over the past decade, there has been much research related to panic disorder. This is probably due to the high prevalence and incapacitating nature of the disorder. In the United States, anxiety-related disorders are the most prevalent clinical disorder (Michelson & Marchione, 1991), and panic disorder is the most frequently diagnosed of the severe anxiety disorders (Leaman, 1992). Individuals who suffer from panic disorder seek professional help more often than individuals who suffer from any other mental disorder (Margraf & Ehlers, 1991). According to Leaman (1992), 3-4% of Americans either currently have, or will have, panic disorder in their lifetimes. …

A Review Of The Literature On Stepfamilies: An Investigation Of Past And Current Trends, Christy L. Johnson Jan 1995

A Review Of The Literature On Stepfamilies: An Investigation Of Past And Current Trends, Christy L. Johnson

Graduate Research Papers

Stepfamilies are an increasing reality in our society. As recently as 1976, it was estimated that as few as 10% of all U.S. children under 18 lived in stepparent households (Nelson & Nelson, 1982). In 1986 approximately 50% of first marriages were ending in divorce, and 65% of divorced women and 70% of divorced men were remarrying (Glick & Lin, 1986). It is clear that stepfamilies have changed from being an alternative family form to becoming a predominant family form (Duberman, 1975; Glick, 1991; Visher & Visher, 1988,1990) and is the fastest growing form of family in the United States …

Impact Of Television And Video Programs On Math Learning, Xin Wang Jan 1995

Impact Of Television And Video Programs On Math Learning, Xin Wang

Graduate Research Papers

The primary purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to present a review of the literature of video animation and study its role in math education; and (2) to conduct a preliminary study of a new video animation math program. The study is motivated largely by a rampant fear of math in American schools and the need to reduce this fear by integrating technology in the teaching of math. The study addresses the following questions: (1) could television and video help to improve elementary students' ability to understand and increase their interest in learning math? (2) is there a way …

Issues Related To Counseling Mexican Americans, Garrin D. Prather Jan 1995

Issues Related To Counseling Mexican Americans, Garrin D. Prather

Graduate Research Papers

The unique psychological problems plaguing Mexican Americans have led to a barrage of articles about how to counsel this population. However, few of these articles have addressed some of the reasons Mexican Americans have historically underutilized mental health counseling services (Keefe & Casas, 1980; Keefe, Padilla, & Carlos, 1978; Padilla & Ruiz, 1973; Padilla, Ruiz, & Alvarez, 1975; Ponterotto, 1987; Sue, 1977). Even fewer articles have addressed the issue of acculturation and its major role in causing psychological stress in the lives of many Mexican Americans (Montgomery, 1992; Padilla, Alvarez, & Lindholm, 1986).

Internet Case Study, Jan Bolluyt Jan 1995

Internet Case Study, Jan Bolluyt

Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series

Spirit Lakes' involvement with the Internet and National Information Infrastructure (NII) appears to be typical of most schools' experiences. Awareness came through interested faculty and administration as well as returning alumni. Equipment was purchased for other purposes and Eisenhower Funds provided the original modems for PSI-NET (our predecessor to the Internet). Free online service from two commercial networks (American Online and Genie) allowed us to better understand their format. As always, the visual medias kept us informed about changes taking place in the structure, traffic, and transformations within the Internet as well as other parts of the NII. Once on …

Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz Jan 1995

Gender Patterns In Science Course Enrollment And Course Drop Patterns In An Iowa Senior High School, Sandra L. Stephen, Elizabeth D. Riesz

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

The Psychoanalytic Id And The Transactional Analysis "Child", Robert D. Peterson Jan 1995

The Psychoanalytic Id And The Transactional Analysis "Child", Robert D. Peterson

Graduate Research Papers

The way in which a person perceives other human beings is a key element in determining his or her interactions with others (Alexander & Neimeyer, 1989); for educators, who frequently have major impacts on students and on the community at large, this perception of others is particularly important. This conceptualization of human nature is sometimes referred to as the individual's "personality construct", with the term "construct" implying "a complex image or idea formed from a number of simpler images or ideas" (Stein, 196 7, p. 314). An individual's image of others consists of, but is not limited to, his or …

Empowering Women To Develop Self-Esteem Through Counseling, Deginesh Worku Jan 1995

Empowering Women To Develop Self-Esteem Through Counseling, Deginesh Worku

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this literature review is to explore the concept of self-esteem and empowerment and to suggest ways of empowering women to develop self-esteem through counseling. To this end, first the review contains an explanation of the condition of women with a focus to their self-esteem. Second, this review provides definitions of self-esteem and an investigation of its importance, development, and the obstacles that prevent women from having self-esteem. Third, this paper will highlight the importance and the roots of empowerment and how empowerment relates to self-esteem. Fourth, it will explore the role of counseling in the development of …

The Psychology Of Menstruation, Natalie J. Martin Jan 1995

The Psychology Of Menstruation, Natalie J. Martin

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The menstrual cycle is not only a physiological experience, it is also a psychological, social, and cultural one. However, the majority of the research on menstruation views the experience of menstruation via the medical model. Through this lens, menstruation is not a natural, healthy part of a woman's experience, but a pathology requiring diagnosis and treatment. This study focuses on whether cultural and social expectations affect women's psychological evaluations of the menstrual experience, and particularly, whether identification with feminism affects attitudes toward menstruation and the physical and emotional symptoms experienced. Subjects were 87 college women who completed 30 days of …

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer Jan 1995

Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1994-95, Paul E. Rider

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since 1976, annual reports have served as a continuing record of the activities of the Iowa Academy of Science and an archive for its history. These augment the 100 year IAS history written in the centennial year of 1975.

This report covers the period from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995. It is based on the official records of the Academy (committee reports, Board minutes, correspondence) as well as the recollections, impressions and thoughts of the author.
