What Determines The Level Of Funding For An Endangered Species?, Josh Mahoney

Major Themes in Economics

The U.S. federal government allocates resources for the protection of endangered species. Using an ordinary least squares regression, the study analyzes what variables affect the amount of funds an endangered vertebrate receives from the federal government. The results suggest that animal size affects spending decisions. Specifically, larger animals receive more money. Animals designated as high priorities by the federal government do not receive significantly more funds than animals given lower priority. Animals in conflict with economic development, however, are given preference in spending decisions. Overall, the results indicate a lack of consistency in current policy towards endangered species preservation.

We use this metal oxidation inquiry activity to encourage students to investigate the law of conservation of matter by performing combustion reactions on readily available metals such as aluminum, copper, iron, tin, and zinc. After observing mass changes, we challenge students to consider from where additional mass of products comes. This activity promotes National Science Education Content Standards A, B, and G and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, and 3.

Wow! Dna In My Food?: The Anatomy Of A Smoothie, Mike Zeller

While many students are able to speak at length about DNA, their fundamental understanding of the pervasiveness of DNA may still be unchanged. This activity is ideal for helping student link their classroom learning to their own daily experience and observations about DNA. Students also mentally engage by critically thinking about the physical and chemical properties of DNA. This article promotes National Science Education Standards A and C and Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, and 6.

Weaving The Web Of Inquiry: An Activity Introducing Students To Marine Food Webs, Jena Kline, Ryan Dickinson

This activity engages students in a biological investigation focusing on marine life. Students receive pictures of several marine organisms, make observations, and propose a possible food web which includes each of the organisms. Students also explain to the class their rationale behind the construction of their food web. This activity promotes increased familiarity with food webs, ecosystems, and energy flow. While this activity focuses on marine life, the activities and strategies could be used with most any ecosystem of interest. Olanzapine Vs. Conventional And Other Atypical Antipsychotics In Response And Side Effects For The Treatment Of Schizophrenia, Jade A. Knutson

Graduate Research Papers

The efficacy and side effects of olanzapine (an atypical antipsychotic) for the treatment of Schizophrenia were compared over ten different studies. The methods, findings, and limitations of olanzapine treatment when compared to conventional antipsychotics, monotherapy atypical antipsychotics, and combination atypical antipsychotics were addressed. These studies looked at populations of people with first-episode Schizophrenia, chronic cases, and resistant positive and negative symptoms. Olanzapine showed to have an equal to or greater decrease in negative symptoms and also an equal to or greater reduction in positive symptoms. Olanzapine also showed to have a reduction in extrapyramidal symptoms and an increase in neurocognitive …

Due to the retirement of the former earth science teacher I was given the opportunity to take over the earth science elective classes. Oskaloosa Senior High School is based on a trimester school year. The third trimester earth science course was formerly called Wilderness Adventures. I renamed the course as Field Research Experience. This added greater value due to emphasis on more science skills and possible career application. As an active outdoorsman and former Boy Scout leader I was excited to incorporate the skills needed to enjoy outdoor recreation into those required of persons involved in doing scientific field research.

The Effect Of Uncivil Behavior On Friendships: An Exploration Of Incivility As An Interpersonal Construct, Anna F. Carmon, Becky L. Degreeff, Ann Burnett, Julie L. Semlak, Kelly L. Wolf

Iowa Journal of Communication

Through the lens of politeness theory, this study examined the relationship between perceptions of homophily and individualized trust and uncivil behavior in friendships. Using an experimental survey design, research participants responded to one of four scenarios involving rude cell phone calls. Each represented a different combination of civility and the biological sex of the actor. Uncivil behavior was negatively related to perceptions of homophily and individualized trust. The biological sex of the actor did not significantly relate to perceptions of homophily or individualized trust.

The notion of “Learning styles” seems to be very popular these days in education. The idea that we all learn differently is intuitively appealing with the varied personalities, successes, and struggles of our students. However, the notion that each person learns differently is likely a myth (Olson, 2006; Feldon, 2005; Willingham, 2005). Students don't possess different learning styles; rather every student has unique prior knowledge, experiences, and developmental levels.

Pesticide use raises a number of environmental health concerns for the general public as pesticides are commonly used to increase agricultural productivity and control invading insects, weeds, fungi and rodents (Jurewicz et al., 2006). Pesticides have been suspected to present danger to consumers and bystanders, as well as workers during the manufacturing and transporting process of these chemicals. This is a problem of great significance because if pesticides do play a role in the etiologies of breast cancer, many people are put at an increased risk in their daily lives by consuming and inhaling such toxins. Childhood Vaccination And Autism, Peggy K. Brinkman

In March, 2008, parents of a girl in Georgia were ruled to be entitled to compensation because their daughter developed autistic symptoms after being vaccinated with childhood vaccines (Doheny, 2008). This ruling truly questions the necessity of vaccination for childhood diseases and puts the question in the mind of every parent as to if they should vaccinate their child or not. The purpose of this study is to review literature on the epidemiologic relationship between childhood vaccinations and the development of autism.

The Reasons for Seasons is a 3rd grade Earth science unit that was constructed with the 5E learning cycle lesson plan. Using learning cycles with the inclusion of inquiry based learning is a great way to move from a teacher-centered classroom to a student- centered classroom. The unit was created following the Masters of Arts in Science Education course work. The course work gave a great deal of insight to the development of this unit. This paper undertakes a detailed analysis of the Terri Schiavo case as it was covered in popular media. Drawing on Burkean theory, we argue a critical issue in the case was a struggle between Terri's parents and husband to be seen as the more legitimate family in order to determine the duration and extent of Terri's medical care. We discuss how the private debate over Terri's health and the decision to remove her feeding tube entered into the public scenes of legal and political action. An exploration of the DSM IV-TR research diagnostic criterion of Binge Eating Disorder (BED), its etiology, and viable treatments was conducted. The purpose of this literature review was to provide more information for mental health professionals treating clients who may fit the criteria for BED. Published research literature and treatment manuals were utilized in this review. It was concluded that there are many potential risk/maintenance factors linked to the development of BED, and that treatment interventions involving mindfulness appear to be effective in minimizing the symptoms of BED. I participated in the Live from the Field Earthwatch Expedition - Mammals of Nova Scotia, through a fellowship awarded by Wells Fargo. During this experience I participated in research to study the abundance of mammals in Nova Scotia and determine the effect of climate change on natural systems. After this experience I developed an inquiry project for my students in which they study the populations of insects. The students develop their own questions, collect data and make sense of their research. This piece utilizes performative writing, poetry, and autoethnographic personal narrative to explore tensions that emerge from the clash between my "academic identity" as a critical scholar and my subject position as a heterosexual white male. These pieces focus on interrogating social, cultural, and political systems of power utilizing performance autoethnography as a tool with which to deconstruct whiteness and heteronormative privilege. This piece offers an in-depth, performative gaze at what the critical negotiation of whiteness looks and feels like on the level of lived experience.

Aspergers Syndrome has recently become a "popular" topic in the mental health fields. More and more school aged children are being formally diagnosed with the disorder. Yet, many professionals do not truly understand the nature of Aspergers syndrome beyond being a form of autism. In this paper Aspergers Syndrome is defined and compared with Autism and the causes and possible treatments are discussed, particularly from biological and sociocultural points of view.
