Comparative Transcriptional Profiling Established The Awn As The Major Photosynthetic Organ Of The Barley Spike While The Lemma And The Palea Primarily Protect The Seed, Tilahun Abebe, Roger P. Wise, Ronald W. Skadsen

The lemma, palea, and awn of a barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) spike are photosynthetic organs that supply the developing seed with carbohydrates. The lemma and palea also enclose the seed and protect it from pathogens and insects. Despite the important roles they play, little information exists on gene expression in these organs that identifies their function. In this study, we compared gene expression among the lemma, palea, awn, and developing seed of barley during grain filling using the Barley1 Genome Array to identify highly expressed genes involved in the primary function of these organs. My personal interest about conflict in the workplace and its relation with sex/gender started early in my first years as a communication practitioner, and later became a topic for my academic research. Every organization has standard expectations for member behavior. Socialization ensures that employees learn the accepted ways of responding to each situation and the expected ways of working with others. Socialization may be formal, taking place during orientation meetings, training sessions, workshops, and with assigned mentors. Informal socialization, conversely, involves off-site meetings and social interactions as well as employees learning by watching their coworkers and supervisors (Cousins, Handfield, Lawson & Petersen, 2006; Mujtaba & Sims, 2006).

People buy and read books to gain something they lack in their lives. One might read a novel to have fun, one might read a philosophy book to rethink his/her worldview, or one might read a how-to book to learn an easy process for self-improvement. Self-help books, in particular, are explicit instruction manuals for achieving personal and relational well being (Zimmerman, Holm, and Haddock 122). By analyzing popular self-help books, one can discover what people believe they might be lacking.

Noteworthy People of UNI Documents

Nancy J. Powell graduated from UNI in 1970 with a History major and taught Social Studies in Dayton, Iowa for six years. Since her career move to the U.S. Foreign Service, Powell has held several positions since 1977, including Director of International Intelligence for South Asia and Ambassador to Uganda and Nepal. She was named the first woman Ambassador to India in 2012.
