A Preliminary Study Of The Tempos Used By Preschool Children In The Three Rhythms - Walking, Running, And Skipping, Eva Leah Hulson Jan 1927

A Preliminary Study Of The Tempos Used By Preschool Children In The Three Rhythms - Walking, Running, And Skipping, Eva Leah Hulson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A preliminary study was undertaken to find out at what tempos young children from four to five years of age are best able to walk, run, and skip in concert with music - in this case appropriate music played on the piano. It was carried on with a group of about twenty children from four to five years old from the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station. It was performed under group conditions - all of the children being present during the testing periods. For this study, sixteen measures of music - chosen because of its suggestiveness as well as for …

A Rating Scale For The Study Of Social Behavior In Young Children, Esther Van Cleave Jan 1927

A Rating Scale For The Study Of Social Behavior In Young Children, Esther Van Cleave

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The social behavior of fifty children from one to five years of age was observed and analyzed for traits that should make up a rating scale for measuring social behavior in young children. The results of the analysis were compared with certain child behavior traits, called by Norsworthy and Whitley, "social" and "non-social" instincts; by Watson, "emotions"; by Bolton, "social traits," and by Gambrill, "social attitudes." A preliminary graphic rating scale of twenty-six traits has been replaced by a more complete scale of thirty traits. The scale has five divisions extending from a decidedly high degree of the trait to …

The Status Of The Psychogalvanic Reflex In Psychology, Nancy Bayley Jan 1926

The Status Of The Psychogalvanic Reflex In Psychology, Nancy Bayley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Experimental studies of the emotions are comparatively recent undertakings. Most investigations have been done by means of the "method of expression," on the basis of a physical measurement of characteristic physiological changes, as breathing or pulse. One of the more promising of these measurements is that of the so-called psychogalvanic reflex. This reflex is a change of electrical conduction through the body which can be measured by means of a galvanometer. It occurs under emotional conditions and when an emotion is reported by the subject. This phenomenon was first reported by Feré in 1888 when he found the reflex corresponding …

A Schematic Classification Of General Psychology, Christian A. Ruckmick Jan 1926

A Schematic Classification Of General Psychology, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The elementary student is usually bewildered by the presentation of technical names which are used to describe the various branches of elementary psychology. Very often he cannot easily distinguish between differences in points of view, methods of approach and fields of activity. In a previously published article an attempt has been made to clarify the situation on the subject of method. The same thing has here been attempted for the subdivisions of psychology.

Predicting Scholastic Success On The Basis Of Informational Data, F. K. Shuttleworth Jan 1926

Predicting Scholastic Success On The Basis Of Informational Data, F. K. Shuttleworth

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper reports the preliminary results of an attempt to predict scholastic success on the basis of certain informational data. In connection with another investigation all freshmen at the University of Iowa were asked twenty-six questions concerning their high school grades, high school activities, size of graduating class, population of home town, mothers' and fathers' education, certain home influences, etc. The answers to these questions were wholly objective, being made by checking the appropriate answer. These answers were scored and an actual prediction of scholastic success was made.

The Diagnosis Of Character Types By Visual And Auditory Thresholds, Ronald C. Travis Jan 1926

The Diagnosis Of Character Types By Visual And Auditory Thresholds, Ronald C. Travis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Clinical methods of diagnosis in mental diseases are taking on more scientifically controlled aspects. Especially is this true in the so-called functional neuroses. This study subjected to a certain type of measurement two groups of abnormal individuals, the schizophrenic group and the psychoneurotic. The classical clinical distinction between these two groups is that the schizophrenic is characterized by negativism, restriction of reactions, seclusiveness, emotional and mental deterioration and an introverted viewpoint; while the behavior of the psychoneurotic is characterized by suggestibility, expansion of reactions, overtness, and a correspondence between emotions, thoughts, acts and external conditions.

The Iowa State College Reasoning Test, Thomas F. Vance Jan 1926

The Iowa State College Reasoning Test, Thomas F. Vance

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In order to arrive at the point of this paper on the subject, "The Iowa State College Reasoning Test" it is necessary to describe briefly the other tests of which it is one in the series. The psychological test which has been given this year to the Freshman class of Iowa State College is a modified Alpha. The Alpha was chosen as a basis on which to construct a new form for the reason that it has given consistently higher correlations than it has been possible to secure with any other test. In the modified form, Arithmetic, the Synonym and …

A Preliminary Study Of The Nature Of Finality In Melody, Ruth Updegraff Jan 1926

A Preliminary Study Of The Nature Of Finality In Melody, Ruth Updegraff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

According to a recognized definition, a melody is a succession of musical sounds which is felt to constitute a unity. The stipulation, sometimes made, that this unity must be aesthetic, is felt to be not only ambiguous, the aesthetic depending to some degree on individual taste, but restricting, in the sense that melodies termed aesthetic by common consent would be few in number. Unity implies, first, an interrelationship, and secondly, coherence and completeness as a whole; that is, relationship and finality. The melody problem is that of discovering how a series of tonal stimuli can excite a feeling of unity.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the relation of mathematics aptitude to aptitude in other subjects. The materials available for the investigation were (1) certain tests that had been taken by the Freshmen upon entering the University in 1925 - tests in Mathematics Aptitude (M.A.) and Mathematics Training (M.T.), English Aptitude (E.A.) and English Training (E.T.), Chemistry Aptitude (C.A.) and Chemistry Training (C.T.), and French Aptitude (F.A.) and French Training (F.T.); (2) High School Content Examinations, Iowa Comprehension Test, and Thorndike Intelligence Test Part 1, Form B; (3) grades made in courses during the Freshman year; and (4) …

A Device For Measuring The Degree Of Aesthetic Sensitivity, Norman C. Meier Jan 1926

A Device For Measuring The Degree Of Aesthetic Sensitivity, Norman C. Meier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Individuals differ greatly in their responses to art situations. The exact nature of this sensitivity is not known but the findings of this investigation indicate that it is more acquired than innate. The highest degree of response comes from those that combine early childhood experience of correct esthetic types with later cognitive acquirements. The function itself is fundamental to artistic production and art criticism.

The Address Of The President - The Ministry Of Science, R. I. Cratty Jan 1926

The Address Of The President - The Ministry Of Science, R. I. Cratty

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

We are living in a very progressive age - one which when compared with that of our forebears, is filled with advantages for our welfare and enjoyment that challenges the attention of every thoughtful person. That knowledge is power was never a more self-evident truth than it is today, and science, which is simply classified knowledge, is every day coming more closely in touch with human lives, and ministers to us in innumerable ways undreamed of a century ago. Just how great our debt is for all this it is difficult to say. Captain Roald Amundson, that modern Viking whom …

The Psychological Appeal Of Home Made Playthings, Lovisa C. Wagoner Jan 1926

The Psychological Appeal Of Home Made Playthings, Lovisa C. Wagoner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Overflowing energy, spontaneous activity, characterize the behavior of young creatures and insure the freedom of response necessary for adequate development. The process of integration and coordination of sensory experiences and movements into more complicated wholes is designated as play. Objects which serve to increase the radius of activity arc called playthings. Since these materials of play are drawn from the environment, they are limited, consciously or unconsciously, by those adults who determine what the surroundings of the child shall be. It is by the use of these materials that the child secures an immediate knowledge of objects, of facts which …

Cerebral Dominance In Speech, Lee Edward Travis Jan 1926

Cerebral Dominance In Speech, Lee Edward Travis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was an attempt to determine if the function of speech is controlled primarily by one of the two cerebral hemispheres. Cases of stuttering were chosen as the subjects. Approaches to the problem were made from several angles. (l) A brief case history was obtained. It had to do mainly with early manual dexterity, pre-school and early school training, onset of speech trouble, etc. (2) Tests for ocular dominance. (3) Tests for spontaneous mirror writing. (4) Tests for motor lead and (5) Studies of neuro-muscular action currents.

Some Visual Puns, Christian A. Ruckmick Jan 1926

Some Visual Puns, Christian A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Puns are usually thought of in connection with auditory stimuli in the form of words with a double meaning. It is possible to transfer this phenomenon of double meaning to the visual field. The process may be studied in various transitional forms (1) in the illusion of reversible perspective; (2) in the addition of objects not definitely outlined, and (3) in the alternation of figure and background. These studies are of interest in the light of recent discussions of the psychology of meaning and because of investigations emanating from Gestalttheorie, or the psychology of form. Various figures were devised and …

The Measurement Of Talent In Graphic Art, Norman C. Meier Jan 1925

The Measurement Of Talent In Graphic Art, Norman C. Meier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experimental approach to the discovery of talent in graphic art is made by approximating the mental procedure of great masters in securing a satisfactory composition. Research disclosed that Millet, del Sarto, and others made numbers of trial composition sketches before laying out the final picture. In this study, but one aspect - compositional Balance - is completely developed. Outline sketches in pen and ink were made, one for each of ten different aspects of Balance, using for each as a text some recognized work of art. From each of these were constructed five variations consisting of changes in position …
