A Phenomenon In Vision Similar To Refractory Phase, Roland C. Travis Jan 1925

A Phenomenon In Vision Similar To Refractory Phase, Roland C. Travis

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been found that under conditions of dark adaptation, there exists a rather definite relationship between the three variables, the intensity of the stimulus, dark adaptation, and a visual phenomenon similar to refractory phase of spinal reflexes. Three experiments were made in ascertaining this relationship.

Iowa Placement Examinations, George D. Stoddard Jan 1925

Iowa Placement Examinations, George D. Stoddard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa Placement Examinations in English, French, chemistry, and mathematics are designed primarily for entering college students. Each examination appears in two series: an Aptitude Examination which measures specific capacity in the various branches, and a Training Examination which measures objectively previous performances in the subject. Each examination was prepared through cooperation of the Psychology Department and the Department represented by the specific subject. Their primary purpose is to provide an adequate criterion for the sectioning of classes on the basis of ability.

Temporal Precision In Motor Rhythm, Robert Holmes Seashore Jan 1925

Temporal Precision In Motor Rhythm, Robert Holmes Seashore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The object of this research in motor rhythm is two-fold; (1) the analysis and comparison of factors involved in rhythmic perception and action by means of a battery of 12 psychophysical tests, whose results are treated statistically and individually, and (2) the development amd standardization of a new test for temporal accuracy in motor rhythm, which may be used in conjunction with present measures of musical talent. A graphic record of an observer's tapping in time with a recurrent rhythm pattern is obtained by means of a phonograph chronograph, and is then measured for regularity. In contrast to numerous very …

The Address Of The President - The Social Responsibility Of Science, Orrin H. Smith Jan 1925

The Address Of The President - The Social Responsibility Of Science, Orrin H. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While the writer is aware of the fact that this organization is essentially a research institution he, with practically every other member of this academy, is aware also that there are other matters than research itself that bear directly or indirectly on it, and that are of vital significance and importance to its life and progress and perhaps even to its very existence. I refer to what might be called in a broad sense the social responsibility of science.

The Uranato-Malate Complex, Launcelot W. Andrews Jan 1925

The Uranato-Malate Complex, Launcelot W. Andrews

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The initial object of this research was the elaboration of an exact polariscopic method for the analytical determination of malic acid. The results, however, turned out to have a wider interest. A number of years ago, Walden called attention to the fact that uranyl salts enhance in a remarkable degree the optical rotation of optically active organic compounds of certain classes, particularly of polybasic oxyacids of the aliphatic series. This enhancement does not extend to carbohydrates in a degree sufficient to interfere appreciably, according to observations of Grossmann and others. Yoder has laid the foundation of an analytical method based …

Involuntary Tongue Movements Under Varying Stimuli, M. George Scheck Jan 1925

Involuntary Tongue Movements Under Varying Stimuli, M. George Scheck

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The investigation of involuntary speech movements is a study which has many points of contact. At one extreme there is the attempt to disprove the theory of "imageless-thot" by demonstrating that movements of subvocal articulation are, under normal conditions, always present, and that one may therefore assume the presence of kinesthetic sensations, resulting from such movements. If the movements themselves are so much a part of the thot processes, it is probable that images of a knesthetic-verbal type should accompany them likewise. So, if no concrete visual, auditory, or motor imagery need be present in thinking, at least imagery of …

An Objective Study Of The Vocal Art, Milton Metfessel Jan 1925

An Objective Study Of The Vocal Art, Milton Metfessel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

By means of specially adapted sound photographic instruments, the voices of twelve vocal artists have been photographed. Interpretations of "Annie Laurie" by the following artists were used: MacCormack, Bispham, Welles, Lashanska, Case, Miller, Homer, Nordica, Nielson, Melba. Farrar, and Baker. A new musical staff has been introduced to adequately represent the facts analyzed from the data on the motion picture film. Among the factors of the vocal art isolated so far are: Attack of a tone, Vibrato, Release, Rhythm, Tempo. Sharping and Flatting, Crescendo, Diminuendo, Swell, Glide, Portamento, Effect of Phonetic Elements, Appogiaturas, Effect of Muscular Strain on the Vibrato, …

The Measurement Of Natural Capacity For Skill In Stenography, Oliver A. Ohmann Jan 1925

The Measurement Of Natural Capacity For Skill In Stenography, Oliver A. Ohmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

An experimental study attempting to discover a team of tests for measuring the natural capacity of an individual for attaining skill in stenography. Such a group of tests might be used in the eighth or ninth grades for predicting the success in stenography of those who expect to pursue the commercial course in high school. An analysis was made of the psychological abilities required in stenography. Eleven group tests were selected or devised to measure these several capacities. These eleven tests, together with a performance test in stenography, were then administered to 225 advanced students in high school courses in …

Sound Localization: A Comparison Of Methods, C. A. Ruckmick Jan 1925

Sound Localization: A Comparison Of Methods, C. A. Ruckmick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

While there has been much experimental investigation f the factors involved in sound localization, few studies have actually tested out the methods used for obtaining the results. The chief concern in recent years has been about the physical criteria which determine localization, but lately also the subjective conditions under which observations have taken place have been discussed and investigated. So theoretically, at least, we are again reminded of the truism that results depend upon the methods used as well as upon the more obvious environmental influences. Facts are often functions of procedures.

Photochemical Distribution On The Retina As Shown By The Perimeter, Francis Marsh Baldwin Jan 1924

Photochemical Distribution On The Retina As Shown By The Perimeter, Francis Marsh Baldwin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The extent of the visual field, as well as the distribution of photochemical substances upon it, has been a study of very great interest ever since the end of the eighteenth century, when the English chemist, Dalton, made the classical study upon himself. He was unable to distinguish the various shades of red and for a considerable time afterwards this particular deficiency in color discrimination was termed, "Daltonism." During the latter part of the nineteenth century the subject was given practical importance by a number of observers, especially by the researchers of Holmgren the Swedish physiologist who emphasized its bearing …

New Measurements In The Process Of Reading, E. O. Finkenbinder Jan 1924

New Measurements In The Process Of Reading, E. O. Finkenbinder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The lectometer is a special form of tachistoscope which provides a connection with a chronoscope. Through an open, adjustable sector of a rotating disc is presented material for reading. Just as the view is shut off a small arm attached to the spindle of the disc dips into mercury, thus completing an electric circuit which sets the chronoscope into action. The observer reads into a voice key which stops the chronoscope and gives the time to the thousandth of a second it takes him to know and say what he had observed during the short view.

The Operation Of Iowa State Teachers College Extension Summer Schools In 1923, Pearl Giddings Cruise

History of Education Book Gallery

In this day of rapid advancement in every field of activity, the public demands efficiency. Efficiency in any profession requires systematic, intensive training. The foremost educators of the world today are recognizing and trying to meet the situations in the field in its broadest sense. The "test of opportunity" is being withdrawn, and the privileges of the best in our higher institutions are being placed within the reach of all. This advantage is being made possible through a better teachers training and through the services rendered by Extension Divisions and Summer Schools in the Universities and Colleges over the entire …

The Differential Death-Rate Of The Sexes Among Animals, With A Suggested Explanation, S. W. Geiser Jan 1924

The Differential Death-Rate Of The Sexes Among Animals, With A Suggested Explanation, S. W. Geiser

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It has been conclusively demonstrated in certain mammals, fishes, arthropods, nematodes and mollusks that the female sex has a greater longevity than the male. (Geiser, '21, '23; et al.) Longevity within the species appears to be inherited in the manner of "blending inheritance," i.e., its mode of inheritance is probably through a series of multiple gametic factors. (Beeton & Pearson, '00, '01; Pearl, Parker & Gonzalez, '23; Gonzalez, '23.)

Results Of The Testing Program Given At Iowa State College, Nora M. Klise Jan 1924

Results Of The Testing Program Given At Iowa State College, Nora M. Klise

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The results given in this report were based upon a study of 368 Home Economics students who had been given mental tests in the spring and fall of 1919. 145 of the 368 had been given Alpha mental test, and 223, Thorndike. High school records were available for 339 of them. The object was to study criteria for prediction of college scholarship. Alpha had the highest correlation with college average, 0.45 as compared with 0.34 for high school with college average, and 0.38 for Thorndike with college average. English had the highest correlation, with college average (0.59) of any individual …

Three Different Types Of Genetic Sterility In The Parasitic Wasp, Habrobracon, P. W. Whiting Jan 1924

Three Different Types Of Genetic Sterility In The Parasitic Wasp, Habrobracon, P. W. Whiting

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Almost complete sterility may be induced by imperfect fertilization. Resulting male offspring very rarely produce daughters which are almost always sterile. Complete sterility of males due to lack of external genitalia exists in one strain, which is reproduced from sisters and fertile brothers. A previously fertile strain mutated so that females lay inviable eggs. Rarely an egg will hatch and from the resulting insect the strain is perpetuated. Males of this strain are of normal fertility.

Two Generations Of Selection With Reference To The Inheritance Of Scurvy Resistance In Guinea-Pigs, W. V. Lambert Jan 1924

Two Generations Of Selection With Reference To The Inheritance Of Scurvy Resistance In Guinea-Pigs, W. V. Lambert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Selection over two generations for increased and decreased resistance to scurvy in guinea-pigs has failed to produce conclusive evidence that the individual variations noted in resistance toward scurvy are inherited. An analysis of the effect of age, weight, and vigor as influencing resistance is presented and it is concluded that these factors, within the limits represented in the data, have not influenced the results. The results for the first generation of selection indicate a pronounced influence, but in the second generation the difference between the minus and plus selections is not significant.
