An Extension Of Kirkendall's Study Of Incentives In The Motivation Of Children, Lyle K. Henry, Mary J. Brand

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study was concerned with the incentives which motivate children, with particular reference to sex: and age differences. The questionnaire used was one formulated and used by Lester A. Kirkendall in his study of the influence of certain incentives in the motivation of 284 pupils in grades 4, 5 and 6 in the New Britain, Connecticut schools.2 The purpose of our investigation was to extend the data to include pupils of the upper grade levels and to compare the results with those of Kirkendall. This problem was conducted with the assistance of students in a class in the psychology of …

The Effects Of Punishment In Serial Verbal Learning, B. J. Underwood Jan 1941

The Effects Of Punishment In Serial Verbal Learning, B. J. Underwood

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation was concerned with two major problems: (a) the effect of punishment for error on the rate of serial verbal learning and on the amount of retroactive and proactive inhibition in the recall and relearning of the serial verbal habit, and (b) the determination of the direction and extent of muscular tension accompanying these learning and relearning conditions.

A New Technic For Measuring The Effect Of Practice Upon Individual Differences (Abstract), W. A. Owens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It was suggested that the analysis of variance lends itself to this problem better than the conventional methods of measuring intercorrelations and standard deviations. An illustrative case was given.

Further Studies In The Technique Of Evaluating Biological Background (Abstract), Richard Schweet Jan 1941

Further Studies In The Technique Of Evaluating Biological Background (Abstract), Richard Schweet

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A six-category test of biological background, consisting of terms, names of men, etc., was constructed. Three alternate forms, marked by the same key and of equal difficulty, according to an item analysis, were made. Correlation of odd and even items gave reliability coefficients of + .88 and + .90. Statistical analysis of 500 tests of college and high school students in the state showed significant differences, by analysis of variance, among the following groups: graduate students, juniors and seniors, freshmen and sophomores, and high school students. Norms are given for these groups. No significant differences were found among different comparable …

A Critical Evaluation Of Study Habit Inventories, Irene Mammen Jan 1940

A Critical Evaluation Of Study Habit Inventories, Irene Mammen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Out of a list of 60 items having to do with study habits and study conditions, as are used in certain tests, 44 related to high or low-grade-average categories. Fifty-five per cent of the items were found to differentiate boys only while 26.1 per cent differentiated girls only. Approximately 10 per cent were equivalent in placing the two sexes and about 10 per cent operated in an opposite way. There is some evidence that good study habits are more important in college than in high school for attaining good grades. The study also suggests the need for an evaluation of …

Driving Aptitude Of Ccc Enrollees As Compared With A Similar Age Group From The General Population, Theron S. Carty, A. R. Lauer Jan 1940

Driving Aptitude Of Ccc Enrollees As Compared With A Similar Age Group From The General Population, Theron S. Carty, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two groups of individuals were compared on characteristics pertaining to sensory, motor and central processes, assumed to be necessary to efficiency in driving an automobile, to determine the degree of similarity between traits of 44 CCC enrollees and an unselected sample of 70 youths from the same age groups. The only significant differences found were: (1) CCC enrollees were shorter in stature and (2) less active than the .general population. (3) The vision of the CCC enrollees was also poorer and (4) they lacked experience with automobiles as compared with the average youth.

A Study Of Progress In Reading At Grade Five Level, Maxwell F. Smith Jan 1940

A Study Of Progress In Reading At Grade Five Level, Maxwell F. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reading tests were given to a ten-year-old fifth grade girl for a period of six weeks. Two types of material were used: (1) material from a text book of the fifth grade level was used in daily tests; (2) tests were given two days each week from material used at the college level. Instructions as to the proper reading technique were an integral part of the administration of the daily practices and checks on the fifth grade material. The exercises with college grade material were preceded by discussion and clarification of vocabulary. The subject progressed, in the daily tests, from …

The Relation Of Background, Interest And Study Habit To Grades In College, A. R. Lauer Jan 1940

The Relation Of Background, Interest And Study Habit To Grades In College, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Measures were made of attitudes toward certain matters relating to college activities (Y), study habits (S) as measured by pencil and paper tests, background, (C) as measured by the Iowa State College Cultural Inventory, and the grade-point-average of 87 students (G). Correlations were computed to determine the relative importance of the factors studied. The reliability of the grades was sufficient to insure the significance of results. It is shown by multiple correlation technique that the most important item measured for prognosticating grades is interest (Y). The second important item was background (C), which is somewhat related to intelligence, and study …

An Apparatus For Measuring Tolerance To Light And Visual Efficiency Under Different Conditions Of Illumination, Glenn O. Martinson Jan 1940

An Apparatus For Measuring Tolerance To Light And Visual Efficiency Under Different Conditions Of Illumination, Glenn O. Martinson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Illumination in relation to automobile driving is considered one of the most important problems of highway safety. Because of contrast between source of light and background, lights which give sufficient illumination are considered blinding. An apparatus is described which makes possible the accurate measurement of tolerance to light under different atmospheric conditions. Calibration of the light falling on the test object and the light impinging on the retina makes possible measurement of the optimal conditions of illumination under different degrees of darkness. The light measurements are made by electrometric methods.

Experimental Evidence On Thorndike's Law Of Repetition And Corollaries Frequency And Receny, Morgan Harrison, Earle E. Emme

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

I. Purpose of experiment: To discover whether Thorndike's laws of repetition, frequency, and recency are valid. 2. Method and procedure (1) 55 college students were subjects, with sophomores in in predominance. (2) Percentile rank on intelligence of these students was secured. (3) A maze consisting of 99 bolt heads was used. Two separate circuits, a white light for the desirable path, and the red the undesirable. (4) Trial and error method. Each subject attempted to discover the desirable path with the least number of errors in five trials. 3. Findings (1) The medium number of errors was 81. (2) The …

A Study Of Compensation, Miriam G. Zugmeier, A. R. Lauer Jan 1940

A Study Of Compensation, Miriam G. Zugmeier, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although pages have been written in psychological text books on compensation, a survey of the literature shows an extremely meagre amount of experimental data. The present study is an attempt to formulate some of the problems of compensation into experimental form. Forty subjects were given a series of laboratory tests in which accuracy and speed were compared under normal conditions and under conditions of distraction. Thirty-one of the same subjects were given a written test of the questionnaire type which was divided into three arbitrary categories; traffic compensation (T), social compensation (S), and industry or ambition (I). The following correlations …

Frequency And Seriousness Of Disciplinary Problems In Certain Iowa High Schools, Lyle K. Henry, William Dreier Jan 1940

Frequency And Seriousness Of Disciplinary Problems In Certain Iowa High Schools, Lyle K. Henry, William Dreier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This investigation grew out of a feeling of need on the part of students enrolled in courses in educational psychology. Many students had confidence in their ability to teach subject matter, but they were uncertain as to the behavior problems that might arise and how they could be met. The study sought to obtain from teachers in Iowa high schools information on the following questions. 1. What behavior problems occur most frequently? 2. Which behavior problems do teachers consider to be the most serious? 3. What remedial or corrective measures are employed to meet these problems?

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test For Biological Background, Richard Schweet, A. R. Lauer Jan 1940

Preliminary Evaluation Of A Test For Biological Background, Richard Schweet, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A test, composed of 140 items, including names of men and terms associated with biology, was given to 65 undergraduate students with various majors and 25 graduate students in zoology. The undergraduates' records were analyzed to ascertain the effect of giving the test, with and without time limits, to comparable groups. On the basis of data obtained, a revision of the test was made using 100 select items. This revision was given to 18 graduate and 33 undergraduate students. Correlation of odd versus even items for the separate groups yielded reliability coefficients of + .90 after correction for length. A …

The Organization Of An Academy, Joseph C, Gilman Jan 1940

The Organization Of An Academy, Joseph C, Gilman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Academy Conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science is the one place in which representatives of the state academies meet for discussion of their common interests and problems. Since in the past ten years other immediate needs have held its attention, no discussion of the ever present problem of the methods of attaining its objectives has been presented, hence the present subject: - the organization of an academy-was chosen for discussion. As qualifications for presenting this material, the experiences during the past ten years as secretary of the Iowa Academy of Science and also the representative …

The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon Jan 1940

The Address Of The President: Science And Progress, R. B. Mcclenon

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Science and human welfare have always risen and fallen together. We find this generalization borne out in all recorded history, and even farther back in the dim horizons of prehistory. From the first attempts at counting and measuring, observation of the precision of the periodic recurrence of the seasons, forging of metal tools and weapons, domestication of animals, planting and harvesting of crops, we see that the slow advance of the status of man in his world has been accompanied or even preceded by the advance in science. In the earlier stages, of course, we find art, culture, and the …

College Student Behavior As An Evaluation Of The Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory, Earle E. Emme, Irvine Thoe Jan 1940

College Student Behavior As An Evaluation Of The Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory, Earle E. Emme, Irvine Thoe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One hundred forty freshman students, 56 women and 84 men, were given the Iowa Home Adjustment Inventory. Confidential information was then obtained on thirty out-of-town students. Raters reported on only those whose student behavior was specifically known to them. Ten freshman women live in the Women's Dormitory. There is no men's dormitory, and all the men live either at their own homes or in private homes. This made the desired information not as easily obtainable as on a campus where more students live in dormitories. Furthermore, the conduct of the student who is living at home does not so easily …

A New Test Of Imagination, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1940

A New Test Of Imagination, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A cube drawn in perspective on paper is placed before the subject. The test consists in following one of the eight corners as the cube is tumbled about, in imagination; tipped forward or backward, to the right or left, or turned half way around. These movements makes possible a series of problems graded in difficulty. This test was given to freshman students at Iowa State College in 1933. The mean number of problems correctly solved by Agriculture, Home Economics, and Engineering students was 6.45 ± 0.21, 4.93 ± 0.15, and 9.04 ± 0.20, respectively. The critical ratios were Agri.-Home Ec., …
