A Study Of The Development Of Skill In Learning To Operate The Hollerith Card-Punching Machine, W. Leroy Cation Jan 1939

A Study Of The Development Of Skill In Learning To Operate The Hollerith Card-Punching Machine, W. Leroy Cation

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In this study the writer served as both subject and experimenter. Previous to this experiment the writer had had 110 experience in punching Hollerith cards. The data used for punching were coded prior to the actual punching- of the cards. The 80-column card was used. There were sixteen 30-minute periods throughout a period of five weeks. With two unavoidable exceptions the practice periods were held each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4:00 P.M.

A Reversible Card-Sorting Board, Martin F. Fritz Jan 1939

A Reversible Card-Sorting Board, Martin F. Fritz

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the study of antagonistic visual habits (Fritz, J. Comparative Psycho!., 1930, 11, 171-184), it is necessary to devise a method whereby certain selected habits directly oppose each other. Each learned act must have a counterpart in an antagonistic act so as to produce .interference. Such a system of mutually exclusive habits can be arranged by means of the card sorting technique. Fifty playing cards are glued to a board in a pattern so that when the board is turned around (180 degrees), the numbers (pips) will be the same but the suits reversed, that is, black and red suits …

A Comparison Of Four Methods Of Increasing The Reading Speed Of College Students, Lyle K. Henry, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

A Comparison Of Four Methods Of Increasing The Reading Speed Of College Students, Lyle K. Henry, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Research in the field of education has brought out many weaknesses of the older systems and methods of presenting subject matter. Perhaps some of the most revealing studies have been in the field of reading. The early work of Dodge (1) has been adequately supplemented by the researches of Gates (2) Judd (4) Gray and others. Not only have vast individual differences in reading rate been noted, but marked improvement has also been effected by systematic practice exercises. Much of the earlier work was done with grade pupils in the regular courses of study in reading. More recently Pressey (6) …

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, H. E. Zabel Jan 1939

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, H. E. Zabel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The latest edition of the Biographical Directory of Scientists lists 2623 who are now in Iowa or were formerly here. For every twenty-one of the present North American scientists, two are or were Iowans. Of these Iowans, 1110 were born in Iowa. Only six states have a larger number of native scientists. Of the outstanding or "starred" scientists, fifty-nine are native Iowans, a number exceeded by only five states. There is a native Iowa scientist for every 2275 of Iowa's present population, a ratio exceeded only by two states, each with a much smaller population, namely, Vermont and Utah.

A New Eye-Hand Coordination Test, William Seidler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to devise an apparatus which will measure the type of eye-hand coordination found in automobile driving. The apparatus is of the serial reaction type, the total performance time being measured in hundredths of a second.

The Comparison And Correlation Of Certain Attitudes And Deceptive Tendencies, Wayne Leffler Jan 1939

The Comparison And Correlation Of Certain Attitudes And Deceptive Tendencies, Wayne Leffler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Various studies made by Voelker and Howells have indicated specific tendencies to cheat in persons. Martson found that women were 14 times as honest and 9 times as truthful as men on the average. An unpublished study by Johns and Lauer, made of 94 delinquent boys, indicated a tendency to cheat in certain subject matter. The examinees tended to overstate their knowledge of music and parts of automobiles, but gave a more or less correct statement of knowledge concerning books of the Bible. The present study is an attempt to secure data on comparison of tendency of students to cheat …

The Effect Of Distraction On The Frequency Of Stuttering, Virginia Barber Jan 1939

The Effect Of Distraction On The Frequency Of Stuttering, Virginia Barber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is well known that under certain "distraction" situations stutterers are able to read with greatly increased fluency or even with complete freedom from stuttering. Two investigations of the effect of distraction were made: (1) of chorus reading, and (2) of various rhythms.

The Reliability Of An Abbreviated Test Of Alertness, Charles R. Rostron, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

The Reliability Of An Abbreviated Test Of Alertness, Charles R. Rostron, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In certain types of work a short test of mental alertness is quite important: (1) because of the lack of time and means required to administer a full length test, and (2) because of the motivation of the examinees. The Otis Self-Administering Test has met this demand to some extent but it implies a certain amount of education and takes at least 20 minutes. A survey of test materials indicated some coml1ination of the Army Alpha and Beta tests had possibilities for this type of measuring instrument. A research was undertaken to adapt some of these types of materials to …

Practice In Skills Designed To Improve Ability In Playing Handball, H. C. Bennion Jan 1939

Practice In Skills Designed To Improve Ability In Playing Handball, H. C. Bennion

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Practice sessions in the skill described in this paper were carried on by the writer during the months of January and February, 1939. The object of the practice sessions was to develop skill in handball, in which the subject had had no previous experience. Before deciding on the method of procedure, the subject observed several expert players. He then decided to practice along three lines which seemed most important in securing proficiency in the game.

A Comparison Of Personality Adjustment Scores Of Rural And Urban Children In Ninth Grade, A. Elizabeth Beal Jan 1939

A Comparison Of Personality Adjustment Scores Of Rural And Urban Children In Ninth Grade, A. Elizabeth Beal

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A large number of studies of differences between urban and rural groups have been made. Many have studied the intelligence and achievement of town and rural pupils. (1) However, relatively few have used modern standardized tests of personality and social attitudes. (2) Teachers have often been conscious of the fact that many rural pupils seem more retiring, shy, and ill-at-ease, especially during their early days in the new school. Others have said that they noticed no such differences, or that with all the 4-H work, better transportation and schools, and frequent contacts with town conditions, for rural people, differences such …

The Iowa State Student Adjustment Inventory: A Filial Relations Scale For Personal Procedures, Earle E. Emme, Lyle K. Henry Jan 1939

The Iowa State Student Adjustment Inventory: A Filial Relations Scale For Personal Procedures, Earle E. Emme, Lyle K. Henry

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is the third of a series of papers on the Filial Affection Inventory to be presented to the Iowa Academy of Science. Two years ago the reader (Dr. Emme) reported how the scale was constructed and how it could be used as a tool in personnel work. 1 Last year, Henry made a validation study in which he compared the scale to the home adjustment section of the Bell Adjustment Inventory. 2 The purpose of the present paper is to present the type of data which may he obtained when the inventory is administered to groups of students. Further …

Frequency Of Serious Visual Defects, Edith Burma, A. R. Lauer Jan 1939

Frequency Of Serious Visual Defects, Edith Burma, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Many practitioners have thousands of cards in their patient files which might be used to determine the visual conditions of clinical patients when they appear for examination. From the standpoint of the motor vehicle administrator, two other problems exist. One treats of what the practitioner would find if he were to examine a random sampling of the population to ascertain the extent of visual defects, using regular clinical methods. The other deals with the percentage of defects which a trained examiner giving regular driver’s license examinations might find in a non-clinical population. By non-clinical we mean a sampling of the …

The Problems And Interests Of High School And College Students, Owen Haffner, Donald Schild Jan 1939

The Problems And Interests Of High School And College Students, Owen Haffner, Donald Schild

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine the concerns of interest and the personal problems of high school and college students. The problem was conducted in connection with a course in the psychology of motivation, at Iowa State College. The functional approach in education is receiving much emphasis at the present. If the work of the school can relate itself to the needs and interests of the students, its effectiveness can be greatly increased. Studies such as the present one are thought to be of value in considering curricular offerings of high schools and colleges. The procedure for the …

Analysis Of Difficulties In Reading And Learning To Read, Bena K. Hansen Jan 1939

Analysis Of Difficulties In Reading And Learning To Read, Bena K. Hansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Probably one of the most difficult of mental tasks undertaken by human beings is one that must be begun by the child at five to "even years of age. If the tools with which he works at this task, namely, learning to read, are not up to par, his reading will be carried on in a defective manner or may not even be achieved at all. Bad habits of attacking this task may also handicap the child in learning to read. Inability to read with some degree of efficiency is the cause of failure in school and conflicts in both …

An Experiment In Transfer Of Training, Ruth B. Mcdonald Jan 1939

An Experiment In Transfer Of Training, Ruth B. Mcdonald

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Much work has been done on the transfer of training in experiments of perception and motor skills, and some studies have been made using school subject matter. The idea of formal discipline upon which some of the work in the schools has been based, has given way to the more modern phenomenon of transfer. Many of the studies carried on demonstrated transfer effects averaging from 20 to 30 per cent. The present study has to do with the simple sensori-motor skill of card sorting. It was assumed at the beginning of the experiment that negative transfer would be noted. The …

Zero order correlations arc presented with further analysis by multiple correlations techniques. The order of importance of variables studied are presented.

Methods In Teaching Ornithology, T. C. Stephens Jan 1939

Methods In Teaching Ornithology, T. C. Stephens

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A brief outline is here presented of a course in ornithology (bird study, if you prefer) as I have tried to give it - never with complete success, however. In the first place, I have planned a course to give the student four semester hours of credit. (As a matter of fact, the undergraduate student of this day has so many "requirements" to satisfy, for graduation, for major and minor, for a teaching certificate, for practice teaching, or in his pre-professional schedule, that most students have difficulty in finding time for a 4-hour elective course). In many respects the second …

Use Of The Laboratory In Science Teaching, F. G. Brooks Jan 1938

Use Of The Laboratory In Science Teaching, F. G. Brooks

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The most distinctive contribution that the sciences have made to educational practice is the laboratory method of instruction. We can safely attribute much of the progress made in the various scientific fields and a large share of credit for the fine tradition of scholarship that has pervaded the sciences during the past century to this method of teaching. The science of human anatomy received its greatest acceleration when the young Vesalius pushed aside the clumsy barbers who had been brought into the amphitheater to demonstrate dissection and showed the gowned professor that a student could dissect. When Louis Pasteur introduced …

The Effects Of Using A Syllabus On Grade Averages In Elementary Psychology, L. K. Henry, A. R. Lauer Jan 1938

The Effects Of Using A Syllabus On Grade Averages In Elementary Psychology, L. K. Henry, A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Numerous factors enter into any teaching situation; such as, the number of periods devoted to instruction, methods of carrying on the class, training and personality of the instructor, motivation and ultimate objectives of the student, presence or absence of one or more "spark-plugs" in the class to keep daydreamers on the subject, previous training of the students, difficulty of the textbook and so on. The latter item alone is a matter of major consideration, particularly if it is not fitted to the group. Further, the proper use of textbooks and references, work-books, classnotes, models, charts, demonstrations, motion pictures and other …

A New Attitude Scale On Religion And Ethics, Leigh C. Douglass, Fred Eisen Jan 1938

A New Attitude Scale On Religion And Ethics, Leigh C. Douglass, Fred Eisen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This is a new attitude scale constructed in part after the procedure of Thurstone and Chave, but adapted so that two supposedly related attitudes can be measured and studied to see the extent to which both attitudes may be found in the same subject. The test allows for a measurement of attitudes towards both religion and ethics, and for an estimate of the degree of conservatism or radicalism of each of these attitudes. Suggestions for the use of the scale are also given.
