Finding For A Psychology Of Religion, Earle E. Emme, Lowell De Garmo Jan 1942

Finding For A Psychology Of Religion, Earle E. Emme, Lowell De Garmo

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A recent analysis of the nine most recent textbooks on the Psychology of Religion revealed a dearth of the commonly accepted findings in the field of psychology. Early authors omit topics of personality, mental health, personal religion, and religious expression. Childhood and adolescence were discussed in a minor way. Much emphasis was given to mysticism, immortality, primitive religions, prayer and other topics of considerable interest to theologians. The needs and interests of children, adolescents, and adults are readily recognized as basic to any adapted psychology of religion. Likewise, ideals, character values, methods of influencing youth, etc., should be rated as …

The Use Of The Standard Partial Regression Coefficient In Constructing General Botany Achievement Tests, W. H. Bragonier Jan 1942

The Use Of The Standard Partial Regression Coefficient In Constructing General Botany Achievement Tests, W. H. Bragonier

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Since 1926, various aspects of the general botany teaching program at Iowa State College have been studied. Victor (1933) and Dietz (1935) described studies dealing with teaching procedures and techniques and evaluation practices. Kreutzer (1935) and Dietz and Gould (1939) reported on certain phases of the testing program, particularly the practice of grouping students enrolled in Botany 101 according to scores made on pretests. Bragonier (1941) described the methods used in constructing and evaluating the pretests. The value of grouping the students for instructional purposes is generally acknowledged within the botany department, however, the means by which the students are …

Some students do not support change in attitude toward liberalism …

A Preliminary Study Of The Visual Field In Athletics, Robert Hobson, M. T. Henderson Jan 1941

A Preliminary Study Of The Visual Field In Athletics, Robert Hobson, M. T. Henderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

If a basketball player sees an area half as large as another player, he has less chance of sizing up the entire situation on the floor at any moment. Likewise, if one player secs less at a given time than he did previously or will in the future, he is probably less effective at that given time. This study attempts first to discover whether or not there is a reason to suspect a measurable relationship between the size of the visual field and successful basketball playing. If there is, obviously a test of visual fields would be advantageous to a …

Standards For Research In Personality (Abstract), Edward Rice, R. H. Sylvester Jan 1941

Standards For Research In Personality (Abstract), Edward Rice, R. H. Sylvester

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Vivid word pictures of personalities have ever been portrayed in biographies and character studies. But until the present half century, no standards had been established for analyses, evaluations or comparisons. Bases for present endeavors in those lines were laid in the nineties by pioneers in general psychology. Progress was accelerated by the maturation of methods of mental measurement from 1908 to 1927. Since the latter date, research men in personality have advanced largely by means of methods developed within their own field. Present tentative standards come from the following sources: (I) Imitations of proved methods of mental measurement. (2) Fulcra, …

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt Jan 1941

Ocular Patterns As Indices Of Intellectual Acheivement, Herman F. Brandt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this study is to evaluate, by means of ocular photography, the indices of the learning process. Since the mind is known by behavior of some kind, it would seem logical to assume a study of the characteristic behavior of the human eye would reveal some of the mental processes involved. If attention, retention, reason and reproduction are different phases of the learning process, it is likely that the analysis of ocular patterns would provide a valuable technique to evaluate such mental content. This study is an attempt to evaluate: 1. The relative time spent on respective symbols …

Retroactive Inhibition As A Function Of The Relative Serial Positions Of The Original And Interpolated Items, Arthur L. Irion Jan 1941

Retroactive Inhibition As A Function Of The Relative Serial Positions Of The Original And Interpolated Items, Arthur L. Irion

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The importance of retroactive inhibition as one of the major theoretical conditions of forgetting makes experimentation on it particularly important at this time. Retroactive inhibition may be defined as the decrement in an originally learned act attributable to the learning of a second act between the time of the original learning and its recall. More rigidly than this, retroactive inhibition may be defined in terms of the experimental operations, the experimental design employed in the production of it.

Implementing Recall, H. J. Haverkamp Jan 1941

Implementing Recall, H. J. Haverkamp

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The use of tests as schoolroom aids to learning has long been advocated. The conditions under which these benefits accrue have not, however, been fully explored. This paper is a summary of one of several recent studies at the University of Iowa which have sought information on this problem. An attempt was made, in the investigation reported below, to compare the effectiveness of a reading and a rereading of factual material with that of a reading and a completion test response. Specifically, three learning conditions were compared: (1) the reading of a selection of factual material followed by the taking …

An Empirical Study Of Compensation, A. R. Lauer, Lualis Uthoff Jan 1941

An Empirical Study Of Compensation, A. R. Lauer, Lualis Uthoff

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Textbooks, which have tended to include psychoanalytic concepts, have used the term compensation more or less vaguely. Most authors refer to compensation only suggestively, while others, two in particular, Morgan (1) and Groves (2), have delved extensively into the problem. These writers, however, present rather elaborate expositions on the concept of compensation, but give practically no experimental data on the problems related to it. A review of the literature (3) shows no significant experimental data existing on the problem. It seems that most sources of information are to be traced directly to the Freudian exponents and are mostly of a …

Recent Research On Predicting College Success, E. E. Emme, Mary Patterson Jan 1941

Recent Research On Predicting College Success, E. E. Emme, Mary Patterson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The prediction of college success has been studied from a number of different angles. The rank in high school graduating class is generally considered to have the highest single predictive value. Intelligence was considered important when combined with other factors. Tests of various kinds have been used extensively. The general situation is suggested by Adams (1). He says that the relative quality of achievement during the freshman year in college is best predicted from relative high school achievement, than from the college freshman aptitude test standing, and the I. Q. in the later elementary grades. Thus various factors have been …

Simultaneity And Originality In Human Thought - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Geo. Glockler Jan 1941

Simultaneity And Originality In Human Thought - Paper Presented At The Fifty-Fifth Annual Meeting, Geo. Glockler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

All of us have observed in our scientific work that many discoveries have been made by different investigators at widely scattered places, but at the same time. Some of these instances are so striking that it becomes of interest to consider the matter and make an attempt to explain the condition in the hope that we may understand the phenomenon. The particular cases chosen for illustration are all from the fields of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Furthermore, they are scattered examples which have happened to come to our attention over a number of years. The same observation can undoubtedly be …

Spread Of Effect Or Reward And Punishment In A Multiple Choice Situation, Isadore Farber Jan 1941

Spread Of Effect Or Reward And Punishment In A Multiple Choice Situation, Isadore Farber

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is generally agreed among psychologists that an "empirical" law of effect operates in learning. It is well known that such consequences as the obtaining of food or shock determine to a large extent the final product of the selective and eliminative processes that obtain in the learning situation (2). Just how these consequences strengthen or weaken responses has been the subject of much research and even more verbal polemics. But all competent observers in the field will agree on the empirical fact: the consequences of connections between psychological events which satisfy the prevailing motivating condition strengthen directly the connections …

The Prediction Of Vocational Success, Dewey B. Stuit Jan 1941

The Prediction Of Vocational Success, Dewey B. Stuit

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the most important problems of youth is the choice oi an occupation in which success can be achieved. No single factor is likely to influence an individual's happiness more than his occupation. So far-reaching are the effects of occupational choice that hardly any phase of a person's life escapes its influence. Personal and family happiness are in large part dependent upon the degree to which an individual enjoys his work. If he is capable of doing the work required in his occupation and is interested in it, he is almost certain to be a well-adjusted individual and an …

The Problem Of Night Driving In Relation To Accident Prevention (Abstract), A. R. Lauer Jan 1941

The Problem Of Night Driving In Relation To Accident Prevention (Abstract), A. R. Lauer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Records have shown that nearly 3,089 grade crossing accidents occurred in the United States in 1938. Of this number 1,450 occurred at night. Equating for volume of traffic and miles of travel, about 65 per cent of train-automobile accidents occur at night. Additional data indicate that the chances of a car driving into a train at night are about 9 times greater than in daylight. Of the estimated $3,000,000,000 annual economic loss to the country through automobile accidents it is shown that night driving costs about $1,200,000,000, although only 25 per cent of the driving is done during this period …
