Institutionalization: Trauma And Deliverance, Clemens Bartollas Apr 1975

Institutionalization: Trauma And Deliverance, Clemens Bartollas

Faculty Work

The question of how one person can most effectively touch the life of another in a positive way is a significant one, especially for those whose mission is to increase the Kingdom of God. Drawing on extensive experience with juvenile delinquents and on his own scholarly research, Clemens Bartollas addresses himself to precisely this problem. In a sociological perspective, he raises a number of fascinating questions about interpersonal relations, and suggests a model for Christian action.

Thanks, I Needed That!, Stanley D. Whelchel Jan 1975

Thanks, I Needed That!, Stanley D. Whelchel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Each year, when high school students register for their next year's schedule of classes, the guidance counselors and teachers of science and mathematics hear the statement, "I don't need science or mathematics for what I plan to do after I graduate." It seems almost impossible to change their minds. One usually says, "You will need it when you get to college or to technical school." But this statement usually falls upon deaf ears because students have made up their minds that in the fields of work to which they aspire they will not need any additional mathematics or science. Besides, …

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow Jan 1975

Science, Schooling, And Society: Toward An Integrated Curriculum, Peter B. Dow

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Those of us who have participated in the curriculum movement over the past decade have seen a profound change in the orientation of curriculum makers during this period. In the wave of science-based curriculum projects that followed the launching of Sputnik in 1957 there was little explicit attention given to the social purposes of instruction. The emphasis in those years was on the transmission of knowledge in the most economical form through the identification of central ideas, and on the invention of pedagogical techniques that supported and reinforced the child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. One of the most …

A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen Jan 1975

A Selected Bibliography Of Methods And Materials For Teaching Creative Writing, Linda R. Groen

Graduate Research Papers

Creative writing can be seen, then, as an integral part of the curriculum, and the need to investigate it is readily apparent. The nature of the material available on creative writing necessitated that the investigation be handled in a somewhat different manner from that of the usual research project. Although a great deal has been written about creative writing, the emphasis has been on techniques, rationalities, and ideas. Few research studies have been conducted on the need for or design of creative writing programs. For this reason, and from comments made by authors such as Ms. Mueller, the author has …

The Integration Of Self-Descriptions And Descriptions By Outside References In The Evaluation Of Job Applicants, Jeanette M. Dolezal, Irwin P. Levin Jan 1975

The Integration Of Self-Descriptions And Descriptions By Outside References In The Evaluation Of Job Applicants, Jeanette M. Dolezal, Irwin P. Levin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study was conducted to determine how different types of information are combined to arrive at evaluations of hypothetical job applicants. Sixty subjects were asked to evaluate nine applicants for the position of elementary school principal. The information describing each applicant included a letter of self-description and from one to three letters from outside references. Results can be summarized as follows: (1) evaluative ratings of job applicants were directly related to the value (level of favorability) of the information contained in the outside letters of reference and the value of the information contained in the self-description; (2) the greater the …

Team Orientation In The Chemistry Laboratory, David N. West Jan 1975

Team Orientation In The Chemistry Laboratory, David N. West

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The importance of laboratory experience for students is widely accepted by chemistry educators and usually includes the following behavioral objectives: 1. Training in the scientific method. 2. Developing skills with laboratory apparatus. 3. Learning and applying chemical theory. 4. Communicating laboratory results. It is the opinion of this writer that through a team orientation approach to instruction other behavioral objectives can be attained in laboratory situations that are also useful to students pursuing professional careers in chemistry.

A Speech To Entertain - A Significant But Little Taught Speech Form, James C. Skaine Jan 1975

A Speech To Entertain - A Significant But Little Taught Speech Form, James C. Skaine

Iowa Journal of Communication

For years I have believed the speech to entertain to be an important type of speech. Throughout my teaching career, I have taught the speech to entertain as one of the three major speech purposes; to inform and to persuade being the other two. For most of those years I have felt that this speech purpose was much misunderstood and therefore seldom taught by colleagues at the college level. Support for this belief was supplied recently by Gibson, Kline and Gruner in their survey of the first course in speech at American colleges and universities.1 Their results indicate that …

Averaging And Set-Size Effects In Selecting Groups Of Movies For A Film Festival, Irwin P. Levin, Valerie S. Hensley Jan 1975

Averaging And Set-Size Effects In Selecting Groups Of Movies For A Film Festival, Irwin P. Levin, Valerie S. Hensley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper deals with the set-size effect in information processing: the study of how subjective judgments and impressions based on sets of information vary as a function of the amount of information in the set. Subjects rated each of a series of popular old movies to be used in assembling a college film festival. They then rated intact groups of movies of various size and indicated how much money should be spent for each group. Group ratings and money allocations were examined as a function of group size. Group ratings were found to increase in polarity and money allocations were …

The Iowa Academy Of Science: 1875-1975, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1975

The Iowa Academy Of Science: 1875-1975, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In tracing the beginnings of the Iowa Academy of Science, Jacob Swisher acknowledged in 1930 that the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Dubuque in 1872 probably had much to do with the formation of the first Iowa Academy in 1875. The Dubuque meeting was the first meeting of the AAAS west of the Mississippi River, and it was at that meeting that many of the charter members of the first Academy began to develop a closer association with one another. An excursion across Iowa following the AAAS meeting touched various points of scientific interest …

The Iowa Academy Of Science Parish Farm: A Dream About Tomorrow, Harry T. Horner Jr. Jan 1975

The Iowa Academy Of Science Parish Farm: A Dream About Tomorrow, Harry T. Horner Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A gift may be given for many reasons and what the receiver does with it may depend on many things. The Iowa Academy of Science Parish Farm fits this situation and serves as an appropriate focal point to tell a story-a story with a beginning and a developing plot, but one whose ending is yet to be written, if ever. The Farm story represents a relatively small part of the Academy's first hundred years, yet its potential is great for becoming a significant and unique part of the second hundred years. Just like those who may excitedly look back in …

A Study Of The Classification Systems For Curriculum Laboratories, Maxine M. Wegner Jan 1975

A Study Of The Classification Systems For Curriculum Laboratories, Maxine M. Wegner

Graduate Research Papers

The State of Iowa, through a bill reorganizing the intermediate county education systems into fifteen intermediate area education agencies providing special education, media, and auxiliary services, has mandated that the media division shall provide a professional library and curriculum laboratory for the area that it serves.

The area media center is not a new concept in Iowa as there are presently sixteen such centers in the state

that provide a variety of services to the schools in their area with a few centers providing curriculum laboratories for the teachers in their area. These sixteen centers 4 became a part of …

Some Early And Current Studies Of Rural Churches., William H. Drier

Faculty Publications

The paper reviews about 25 major studies printed since 1920; and in turn; these refer to some 75 other studies about rural churches; their location; numbers; ministers; denominational arrangements; and supporting population per church on a county level. On the role of rural social science in Theological education; one study reports that the pastor is not only a man of God but a man of knowledge; not only in theological but in all fields of study. On the basis of these studies covering 50 years; the author states that while rural is by definition non-metropolitan; people everywhere since the 1960's …

Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer Jan 1975

Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer

Graduate Research Papers

For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys in children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. There were two time periods from which the books were selected. One grouping was from 1959-1963 and the other from 1970-1974. Other books …

Cognitive Profiles Of Blind Children: A Survey Of Intra-Child Differences, Linda L. Royster Jan 1975

Cognitive Profiles Of Blind Children: A Survey Of Intra-Child Differences, Linda L. Royster

Graduate Research Papers

"Since 1900, when the first public school class was organized in Chicago, special classes for blind children have been established in most larger and intermediate-sized communities as well. At the onset, all of the instruction for the blind was conducted in special classes. Gradually, however, blind children in these classes were reassigned for part of the day to regular classes." Today, this trend has turned into a movement to fully integrate blind children into the regular classroom. Within regular classrooms, teachers recognize the existence of individual differences; therefore, instructional methods and assignments are tailored to meet the divergent needs in …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This exploratory study was conducted as a part of a national project to provide valid and reliable means of assessment for Home Economics Competency Based Education Programs. It was initiated from an interest in developing an instrument to assess the attainment of the specified suggested competency that the participant will demonstrate a commitment to the professions of home economics and education. Development of the Measure of CHEE {Commitment to Home Economics and Education) accomplished the objective of identifying the criteria for commitment and the construction of an instrument which would be a valid and reliable measure of presence of commitment. …

Heirs, Ruth West Cole Jan 1975

Heirs, Ruth West Cole

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A creative project has been undertaken for a learning experience in order to better understand and appreciate past and contemporary works of fiction and attendant problems of fabulation for the ultimate purpose of improving guidance of students through literary studies. The project, a novel, demonstrates an attempt to dramatize part of the contemporary phenomenon of the individual's search for "self" within a family whose members rebel against or accommodate themselves to varying perceptions of authoritarian endoctrination and expectation. Although the major characters are women, Heirs is not designed to be a women's liberation story. Rather, the novel is a comic …
